4 May 2015

Eastern Michigan Chapter of ASPE is quickly coming to an end and I’ve found

past year.

Last May, during the car ride to the Region 2 meeting, discussion about having to search thru emails for meeting RSVPs to provide a catering count led to the idea of

using Eventbrite. The board completed a couple beta tests using Eventbrite for the summer planning session and summer board meetings, and decided to start utilizing it for our programs in September. I’ve received positive feedback throughout the year, and we will continue to use Eventbrite next year.

This year we have incorporated design classes into our monthly programs, holding them prior to the technical presentation. We have also started providing proof of continuing education credits

All of the monthly meetings and implemented changes have

I wanted to address.

trend throughout the year of members who RSVP for dinner, however do not come to the meeting without providing

charge for all members of ASPE, ASSE and MBPA, which we would like to maintain.

our technical meeting. If notice is not provided, we will request that you pay for dinner. I will provide reminders about providing cancellation in the summer newsletter, and will be stated on the future Eventbrite invitations. It is our hope that this will encourage everyone to provide cancellation notices which will increase our caterer headcount accuracy, reducing the amount of leftover food, and will positively impact the chapter expenditures for each meeting.

The second improvement for next year is to aim to provide a handout of the presentation at the meeting. We were able to provide that for a handful of meetings this year and when it was not available the presentation was later emailed to those who requested a copy. Based on the feedback stated on the evaluation forms, we understand the strong desire to have a handout of the presentation available at the time of the meeting and will aim to provide that each month.

If you have any feedback about this year’s technical programs, the changes that have been implemented, or would like to suggest any changes or improvements for next year’s program, please contact any of the board members.

vent design class series covering Single Stack Vent Systems.

We have received positive feedback on the design classes and will be continue to provide design classes next year prior to the technical presentation.

Our technical presentation discussed High Rise Water Distribution – Design and Engineering. Thank you to Norm Hall, P.E., President of the R.L. Deppmann Company for providing this presentation!

are 75 ft in height or taller. Detroit is ranked 16th in the nation with 166 high rise buildings.

Designing a high rise water distribution system requires an understanding of all pressure conditions and requirements. This requires determining the available water pressure, understanding the state and local code requirements with regards to pressure requirements, reviewing the expectations of the client to determine the required water pressure at each

minimum required pressure.

The required pressure is calculated by adding the minimum

to account for friction losses within the system and the building elevation.

The available pressure to the building is determined by subtracting the pressure losses acquired thru the water meter,

measured pressure available at the exterior building water main connection.

When the required pressure is determined to be higher than the available pressure, a pressure booster pump must be installed.

Various methods of high rise plumbing distribution systems were discussed as was the importance of identifying pressure zones and sensor locations. Improper sensor location of the

usage throughout the year. Hot water and cold water system designs were discussed, as well as recirculation systems.

In May, the High Rise Plumbing discussion will continue with High Rise Drainage and Venting – Design and Engineering.

Our planning meeting for next year’s programs will be held on Saturday, June 13th. If you have suggestions for design classes or technical presentations for next year, please attend the meeting or contact me with your suggestions prior to June 13th.

VP EducationMark Lamberson, CPD

In March, I was fortunate enough to take part in a tradition that is almost fading away in my family, making maple syrup. I wanted to share some of the statistics behind it that parallel what we do every day. In the process, I also wanted to honor my grandfather, Arnold Lamberson, who passed away last month; the same month that he would have taken to the woods with a brace and

bit to tap a couple of dozen sugar maples every year.

In 2003, my grandfather asked me to bring my video camera

sap into our favorite confection in his household. I helped him tap over two dozen trees, but it was a slow weekend, so I was unable to help cook the sap down to syrup. That would come to be the last year that he made it.

In March, this came full circle when a friend of mine had some extra sap that he was not going to use. I have no maples available to tap, so I gladly accepted. The following data is derived from my two day production of a half gallon of syrup from twenty gallons of sap. Yes, you read it correctly; it takes twenty gallons of sap to make a half gallon of syrup.

My setup was very rudimentary because I did not have a large volume to cook down, and I had to act quickly because the sap could spoil with the rising temperatures outside. I set up a two burner propane stove outside and heated a rectangular pan for nearly two working days to get the water out of the sap and

concentration and 219.5 degree temperature. I blocked three sides of the stove with sheet metal to cut down on the effects of the wind. I also fed the sap at a rate equivalent to the amount of water that was being boiled off. This was approximately a gallon per hour, which is very slow compared to a larger and more established process. I kept the sap between a half inch and one inch deep in the pan during the boiling process. Here are the results.

• Twenty gallons of sap yielded about a half gallon of syrup, which is a very common ratio.

• content, so the sap was roughly 1.6% sugar. This is on the low end, but maple trees can give off sap with lower sugar content later in the season.

• To cook 20 gallons of sap, I had to raise the temperature from approximately 45 degrees Fahrenheit to exactly 219.5 degrees Fahrenheit, or a delta-t of 174 degrees.

• The weight of the sap was 166.6 pounds, so we can calculate the BTU's required to accomplish this at 29,058 BTU's.

• I used approximately two 20 pound "barbecue bottles" that contained approximately 344,750 BTU's each, and

to 4.2%.

Most of the people I know that make their own syrup

Borer has wiped out a majority of the Ash trees locally,

be Ash. Based on 7.2 million BTU's per face cord, and a cost of $60.00, we can surmise that someone cooking with Ash could do it for about $5.75.

The bottom line is that it took me about twenty hours and $28.00 (not counting the cost of my wife's ruined pan) to make a half gallon of syrup. Most people I told this to wouldn't want to make that kind of effort for such a small reward, and admittedly, it looks hilarious on paper. I had the luxury of free syrup for thirty years, so if I want my kids to experience what my grandfather gave to me, I am more than happy to oblige. Thanks, Grandpa.

On another note, ASPE national has decommissioned

in the system and I will be testing it out in the next

differently, so please let me know if you have any issues.

I also started distributing the ASPE spreadsheets to the new members and current members that attended technical sessions for this past season. If you did not get an invite to download the spreadsheets and feel you should have, please contact me at [email protected].

Finally, our planning meeting will occur in June. Any input on technical session topics is greatly appreciated. You may also feel free to attend in person. Contact one of the board members for more information.
