The Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame Team Inductees

A sports history of the peoria areaAs you look at our newly installed plaques around the outer con-course of the Civic Center, you will be struck by the great individu-als and teams honored by this organization over the past threedecades. Indeed, our collection of plaques is, in itself, an area his-tory of sports.

To continue our success, we rely on individuals like you. Your contin-ued input is essential. You can nominate a sports team or an out-standing athlete by writing a brief account of accomplishments andmailing it to any of the two dozen persons on our Board of Directors.

Keep a few things in mind. No individual has ever been inducted intothis Hall simply on the basis of a great high school career. Yournominee should have gone on to an impressive college or profes-sional career. Please give this some thought. Have we missed an in-dividual or a team? If so, please bring our oversight to our attention.

About the Neve Harms Award…The Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame Neve Harms Award,

formerly the Peoria Advertising and Selling Club’s Annual Merito-rious Service to Sports Award, was named the Neve Harms Awardin 1966 and for a very good reason. As Director of Proctor Recreation Center, Harms observed the

need for all youths to experience participation in sports activities, and not just the few who excelled. He, therefore, adopted a firmpolicy which assured that all youths would have an opportunity toplay in games of the various sports controlled by Proctor Center. This plan met with much success and certainly with acceptanceby parents whose children became more interested in sport activ-ities at Proctor and consequently made good use of their free time.Neve carried through this policy when he was appointed

Superintendent of the Peoria City Recreation Department whichlater became part of the Peoria Park District. In addition, he alsodeveloped a system of recognition for all youths so that eachyoung person could feel good about his or her efforts. This kind of interest in all youths regardless of ability came from

a most competitive and outstanding athlete. Neve was a four-sportplayer at Manual High School and a three-sport letter winner atBradley University. He was a member of the 1929 Manual HighSchool State Championship Basketball team.
