She “yes Lord” more completely than we can imagine, “do unto me as you will.” How can we submit to that kind of Faith, confident that only good will come from God’s Will? How can we trust so much as to turn our lives over to Him completely? Is this not the strength of the great saints, and are we not great sinners? Baby steps. This month as we entreat the Blessed Mother with our rosaries, let us think baby steps. When ask our children if they have considered serving the Church in some capacity, let us think baby steps. From the Redemptoris Custos, vs. 23-24, St. John Paul II says, “What is crucially important here is the sanctification of daily life, a sanctification which each person must acquire according to his or her own state, and one which can be promoted according to a model accessible to all people. St. Joseph is the model of those humble that Christianity raises up to great destinies, he is the proof that in order to be a good and genuine follower of Christ_ it is enough to have the common , simple , human virtues, but they need to true and authentic.” Mary’s yes and Joseph’s yes is all we can hope to give. We need not work with the lepers or be burned at the stake to merit Heaven. We need but submit to the path He has laid before us. NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This month we cry, “Hail Holy Queen, our light, our sweetness and our hope.” Mary is the truest beacon of light we can aspire to; the complete picture of compassion and acceptance. The Lord has promised that all things are possible; we can

move that mountain, one shovel full at a time. We need not work with the lepers or be

burned at the stake to merit Heaven. We need but submit to the path He has laid before us.

As we start planning for the next fraternal year I ask that you look deep inside and consider saying yes to your Knights family. Trustee Mike LaRiccia has said yes to becoming Grand Knight and he needs a lot of help filling leadership positions and various committee slots. As a Council family he needs each of you to trust in the Father like St Joseph did and say yes. I am sorry that I will be missing the next Planning and Membership meetings, but Charlene and I made these reservations well over a year ago. Thank you DGK Bob for saying yes to covering for me.

Different Life Stages, Changing Needs..

You may have a long-range expense for which you are saving, such

as college for your children. You may be concerned about a comfortable,

worry-free retirement. You may want to protect your ability to earn a

living. You may wonder if needing costly long-term care will deplete your

hard-earned assets. You want to have something to leave for your wife,

children or grandchildren.

At some point you may have had all of these needs on your mind.

Over time, these thoughts make way for others as your needs evolve, your

finances change and you get older. What is important to you at age 20,

may not be at 30, or 45, or 65. What is the best way to be prepared for

these changes before they happen?

One of the easiest ways to be financially ready for changes that come

with different life stages is to meet annually with your professional

Knights of Columbus agent, and address the needs that his analysis

uncovers. This can help you be ready to face the financial challenges and

issues on the road ahead.

During that annual visit, I’ll take the time to review your needs,

goals and budget. I’ll update all beneficiaries on your policies and be sure

your coverage meets your needs. I’ll recommend a program of life

insurance, long-term care, disability income insurance and guaranteed

retirement products that will help you rest easy at night.

Whatever your needs, whatever your concerns, whatever your stage

in life, I can help.

Contact me today to learn more.

Ladies Auxiliary

Dear Ladies

Wanted to take a minute to say thank you for all your help and support. We have had a busy year and it was a very productive year as well. We supported the Knights with their dinners and fundraisers and supported the Fawn House as well. Thank you especially to those who covered at Religious Goods sales this past weekend so that we could attend the State convention. It was a very good convention and we got to meet lots of women from the other auxiliaries and get some ideas from them. Lynne’, Vilma, Annette and I are all State Officers now so we do have a good presence at the State level. Our next meeting is May 7th. We will be presenting a nomination for slate of officers for next year. All offices are open to everyone. Please consider helping out and making a difference by being an officer next year. We will be voting on them at the June meeting.

May 2nd will be the May Crowning at the Parish, with a Living Rosary with the children. It will be a wonderful event. We need help with cookies for refreshments – anyone who can possibly bring some it would be appreciated. What a wonderful way to start a Saturday – and stay and enjoy the event.

Our next religious goods will be May 30-31st. It is also the Last pancake breakfast before summer. Please come help if you can.

I would like to end with a favorite quote: “The proof of love is in the works. Where love exists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist.” -- St Gregory the Great

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF FATHER MCGIVNEY

Founder of the Knights of Columbus in 1882 God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and the lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son Jesus Christ more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J McGivney on earth according to the design of Your Holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (make your request) Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please report all favors received to: The Fr McGivney Guild 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven CT 06510-3326

NEWS FROM THE STATE CONVENTION 4/24 -4/26 2015

NEWLY ELECTED STATE OFFICERS FOR THE 2015 - 2016 FRATERNAL YEAR

State Deputy - Greg Sprigg State Secretary – Tom Thorn State Treasurer – Vic Edwards State Advocate – Thierry Barkley State Warden – Tony Pasqual

Message from Outgoing State Deputy Ray Gardea

Brother Knights:

It’s been a pleasure and a honor to have served as the Nevada State Deputy for the past two years, and as my term comes to a conclusion this fraternal year I have been truly blessed by working with all State Officers, District Deputies, State Directors/Chairmen, General Agents, Field Agents, Rev Fathers, Grand Knights, Ladies Auxiliaries and numerous Brother Knights throughout Nevada Jurisdiction. Fraternal Year 2013-2014 saw Nevada reach Circle of Honor Status. This was accomplished by everyone contributing to help grow the order, attaining Star Council Status for numerous councils and meeting their membership goals. The Motto “One Member….Per Council…Per Month” was truly an inspiration for those councils reaching Star Council for the first time. However, this past fraternal year has been a struggle to continue growing our order and at the same time reach Circle of Honor Status. We will continue to push forward and have two months to attain a positive finish for the fraternal year. Our suspensions have been unusually high and the amount of new members brought in are not compensating for our losses. Although it does not look promising I am confident we can finish in a positive status by the end of June 2015 with everyone’s help once again. Finally our 105th Annual Convention is upon us which will be hosted by UNLV Council 15061. This year’s convention is held at the Alexis Park Resort Hotel, 375 E Harmon, Las Vegas NV. All indications show thalis will be a memorable and successful convention for all those attending. God Bless. Knights of Columbus NEVADA STATE COUNCIL Ceremonials

From David W. Strait PSD 2002-2005

Worthy State Deputy, State Officers, State Council members, and Brother Knights

This year we continued our plan to increase our 2nd Degree team capabilities by certifying more teams and more team members. All three 2nd degree team of southern Nevada have performed one or more degrees this year. The same can be said for the 2nd Degree teams in northern Nevada. We need new members to fill vacant rolls in Elko, Las Vegas, and Reno. This is a never ending need. In the Third Degree we have shown growth by adding another warden and by recruiting an additional PFC in the Las Vegas Area.

We also have a new Conferring Officer, Joe Labuda, from Reno. Conferring Officer Ken Peak trained and auditioned Joe in this remarkable accomplishment.

First Degree team growth is slowly progressing. Several councils have standing 1st Degree teams and schedule degrees monthly. In these councils the Degree depends on candidates showing up, which is exactly opposite of situations where the team is not available. Our ceremonials are designed to teach us the lessons that correspond to our declared principles. Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Within these general areas there are many other lessons that relate to, and give witness to our catholicity. Many of our members promptly forget their degree experience and never again revisit it. One way, (the best way) to avoid this is to get new members involved in conducting the degrees and doing it frequently. Men sign up to join our order with only the vaguest idea of what to expect. If we don't teach these new members the lessons of what makes us who we are, they will not truly enter our brotherhood, and they will leave us. Our degrees and other ceremonials teach these essential lessons. No one learns these lessons better or experiences them more deeply than the dedicated brother Knights who deliver the messages as ceremonial team members. Any teacher will tell you that there is nothing that strengthens your grasp of a subject more than teaching it to someone else. Similarly, some of the most prominent and dedicated Knights became that way because they were active in ceremonials. Also, the most successful and dynamic councils all have extensive involvement in both public and private ceremonials and protocol. That’s why it is so important that we keep building, expanding, and improving our degree teams.

We also need to reinforce the observance of protocol as we go about our council business and conduct our fraternal programs. There is no debate that meetings are more interesting and productive when our traditional protocols are being followed, when our leaders carefully manage the meeting agenda, and when order is maintained. The Supreme Council has given us a shortcut by allowing use to play a video for a new member, thereby excusing us from learning parts and truly teaching the lessons. This gives us added opportunity to neglect our leadership role in studying and learning the ceremonial materials. On the other hand, the video might possibly inspire future Knights in a way that our amateur efforts might never achieve. Nevada has a treasure of dedicated Knights who truly love ceremonial work.

I have been continually impressed with the dedication and sacrifice of Brother Knights in performing degree work. This is why I have faith that there will always be a place for inspiring live performances of our Degrees in Nevada.

Vivat Jesus!

David Straight

POPE FRANCIS’ EASTER MESSAGE

RBI ET ORBI MESSAUGE to the City and to the World 5 April 2015

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Jesus Christ is risen!

Love has triumphed over hatred, life has conquered death, light has dispelled the darkness!

Out of love for us, Jesus Christ stripped himself of his divine glory, emptied himself, took on the form of a

slave and humbled himself even to death, death on a cross. For this reason God exalted him and made him

Lord of the universe. Jesus is Lord!

By his death and resurrection, Jesus shows everyone the way to life and happiness: this way is humility,

which involves humiliation. This is the path which leads to glory. Only those who humble themselves can

go towards the “things that are above”, towards God (cf. Col 3:1-4). The proud look “down from above”;

the humble look “up from below”.

On Easter morning, alerted by the women, Peter and John ran to the tomb. They found it open and empty.

Then they drew near and “bent down” in order to enter it. To enter into the mystery, we need to “bend down”, to abase ourselves. Only those who abase

themselves understand the glorification of Jesus and are able to follow him on his way.

The world proposes that we put ourselves forward at all costs, that we compete, that we prevail… But Christians, by the grace of Christ, dead and risen, are

the seeds of another humanity, in which we seek to live in service to one another, not to be arrogant, but rather respectful and ready to help.

This is not weakness, but true strength! Those who bear within them God’s power, his love and his justice, do not need to employ violence; they speak and

act with the power of truth, beauty and love.

From the risen Lord we ask the grace not to succumb to the pride which fuels violence and war, but to have the humble courage of pardon and peace. We

ask Jesus, the Victor over death, to lighten the sufferings of our many brothers and sisters who are persecuted for his name, and of all those who suffer

injustice as a result of ongoing conflicts and violence.

We ask for peace, above all, for Syria and Iraq, that the roar of arms may cease and that peaceful relations may be restored among the various groups which

make up those beloved countries. May the international community not stand by before the immense humanitarian tragedy unfolding in these countries and

the drama of the numerous refugees.

We pray for peace for all the peoples of the Holy Land. May the culture of encounter grow between Israelis and Palestinians and the peace process be

resumed, in order to end years of suffering and division.

We implore peace for Libya, that the present absurd bloodshed and all barbarous acts of violence may cease, and that all concerned for the future of the

country may work to favour reconciliation and to build a fraternal society respectful of the dignity of the person. For Yemen too we express our hope for the

growth of a common desire for peace, for the good of the entire people.

At the same time, in hope we entrust to the merciful Lord the framework recently agreed to in Lausanne, that it may be a definitive step toward a more

secure and fraternal world.

We ask the risen Lord for the gift of peace for Nigeria, South Sudan and for the various areas of Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. May

constant prayer rise up from all people of goodwill for those who lost their lives – I think in particular of the young people who were killed last Thursday at

Garissa University College in Kenya –, for all who have been kidnapped, and for those forced to abandon their homes and their dear ones.

May the Lord’s resurrection bring light to beloved Ukraine, especially to those who have endured the violence of the conflict of recent months. May the

country rediscover peace and hope thanks to the commitment of all interested parties.

We ask for peace and freedom for the many men and women subject to old and new forms of enslavement on the part of criminal individuals and groups.

Peace and liberty for the victims of drug dealers, who are often allied with the powers who ought to defend peace and harmony in the human family. And we

ask peace for this world subjected to arms dealers.

May the marginalized, the imprisoned, the poor and the migrants who are so often rejected, maltreated and discarded, the sick and the suffering, children,

especially those who are victims of violence; all who today are in mourning, and all men and women of goodwill, hear the consoling voice of the Lord Jesus:

“Peace to you!” (Lk 24:36). “Fear not, for I am risen and I shall always be with you” (cf. Roman Missal, Entrance Antiphon for Easter Day).

Citation Text: In his encyclical Evangelium Vitae, Pope St. John Paul II articulated his vision of “a Culture of Life” that would demonstrate “unconditional respect for the right to life of every innocent person” (EV 101). Inspired by that vision, the University of Notre Dame Evangelium Vitae Medal honors those individuals whose outstanding work proclaims the Gospel of Life by steadfastly affirming and defending the sanctity of human life from its earliest stages. This year, Notre Dame is pleased to honor Carl Anderson and the Knights of Columbus for their heroic and tireless efforts “to ensure that justice and solidarity will increase and that a new culture of human life will be affirmed” (EV 6). From its founding more than 130 years ago, the mission of the Knights of Columbus has been the protection of the most vulnerable members of society: the widowed, the orphaned, the disabled, the elderly and the unborn. Founder Rev. Michael J. McGivney envisioned a fraternal organization dedicated to the help and support of families in need, where “each member is accepted, respected, and honored precisely because he or she is a person” (EV 92), precious in the eyes of God. That support has taken many forms in the history of the Knights. In the last year alone, the Knights raised $170 million for charity and gave more than 70 million hours of volunteer service. Through their Ultrasound Initiative, launched in 2009, the Knights have donated over 540 ultrasound machines for pregnancy care centers across the country, at a cost of more than $16.1 million, giving expectant mothers a vision of “the miracle of new life within [them],” in the words of Supreme Knight Anderson. In the spirit of “solidarity [with] society’s weakest members” (EV 8), the Knights’ commitment to the dignity and intrinsic worth of every human person extends to the elderly, the abandoned and the disabled — through their fundraising efforts on behalf of shelters for women and children, advocacy against euthanasia and assisted suicide, and volunteer work with the Special Olympics and other organizations that care for those with physical and intellectual disabilities. Taken together, their work constitutes “a united ethical effort to activate a great campaign in support of life” (EV 95). In his role as supreme knight since 2000, Carl Anderson has embodied the Knights’ commitment to advancing a Culture of Life. As a professor of family law at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, and later as the founding vice president and first dean of the Institute’s United States session, he played a vital role in advancing a comprehensive understanding of the family as “a community of life and love, founded upon marriage,” that “is summoned to proclaim, celebrate and serve the Gospel of life” (EV 92). Supreme Knight Anderson was appointed by John Paul II to the Pontifical Academy for Life in 1998, and by Pope Benedict XVI to the Pontifical Council for the Family in 2008. In addition, he has served as a consultant to the Pro-Life Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops since 2002. Under his leadership, the Knights of Columbus has reached unprecedented levels of charitable giving, and its 1.8 million members have tirelessly volunteered, educated, advocated, donated and prayed on behalf of every human life, from conception to natural death. They are an inspiration as they carry out the task that God has entrusted to each of us: “To defend and promote life, to show reverence and love for it.” So it is fitting that, at this university dedicated to Our Lady, “who is the mother of Life” (EV 105), we celebrate their remarkable contributions “to build ... the civilization of truth and love” and so bestow on Carl Anderson and the Knights of Columbus the University of Notre Dame Evangelium Vitae Medal.
