Since our last brochure, we’ve had an event-full time in many ways! Taking Plymouth Arts Centre out On Tour with Open Air Cinema at Royal William Yard was huge. It demonstrated to us the appetite for Event Cinema - we want to do much more. We’ve programmed more screenings of Sing-A-long-A-Grease here in the cinema as part of the Christmas festivities, along with an exhibition of Children’s Christmas Cards and an Artist’s Christmas Commission. All to be washed down with a delicious Christmas menu in our restaurant.

You will notice some changes to our art and film programmes in the coming months - we are thinking hard about everything we do and how we achieve it, making the most of our modest resources.

In this film programme, a few of the most popular films are running for longer than usual. This means that there will be more opportunity for people to see some of the films that we think are going to be popular here.

Increasingly more of our audience are finding out about our activities from our website and social media. This, combined with the high cost of printing and posting our brochure, means that we will be phasing out our free mailings over the coming months. We will make sure you still get to know what’s coming up, but if you don’t already receive them, now is the time to start signing up for our weekly emailed e-flyers - and don’t forget you can view our brochure on our website too.

As always, we’re looking forward to welcoming you here during the coming months and celebrating Christmas in style with you too!

Walk On: From Richard Long to Janet Cardiff 40 Years of Art Walking

Walk On: From Richard Long to Janet Cardiff – 40 Years of Art Walking gives an insight into the recent art practice of nearly 40 artists. Several are internationally acclaimed. Others are bright new talents. All have made new work simply by taking a journey on foot. Walk On shows that from land art to conceptual art and from street photography to film, much of the important art of our time has been created through an act of walking.

The exhibition at Plymouth Arts Centre features the work of Francis Alÿs, Janet Cardiff, Bradley Davies, Melanie Manchot, Pat Naldi & Wendy Kirkup, plan b, Jeremy Wood and walkwalkwalk. In the selection of these works there is a strong sense that we are not on our own. Following strangers, walking with others, collaboration, coordinated manoeuvres and public participation, are the processes involved in making these works. Couples, duos, regiments and members of the public take to the streets, many of them captured by the omnipresent CCTV camera, others sending signals about their position to recording stations in the sky. Several of the artists shown here directly employ this technology whilst others mimic it, together these films, etchings and works on paper highlight an increasing acceptance that all of our movements are tracked and traced, ensuring that we’ll never walk alone.

Walk On is brought to Plymouth thanks to a partnership between Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University; Plymouth Arts Centre; Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and the Gallery at Plymouth

College of Art. The exhibition is displayed across these four city centre sites and is backed by an extensive education and events programme. For more information visit walkonplymouth.org

Walk On is curated by Cynthia Morrison-Bell and Mike Collier with the collaboration of Alistair Robinson and Janet Ross.

In addition to Walk On, the Looe Street Detectives Soundwalk is also available throughout Walk On. This is the latest outcome of the project initiated by artist Sara Bowler who worked with a group of residents to investigate the history of Plymouth Arts Centre and the surrounding area. This work led to an exhibition and has continued, resulting in the soundwalk that recounts local history as uncovered by the Looe Street Detectives. Supported by Visual Arts South West, Engage South West and with additional backing from Cllr Chris Penberthy’s Community Grant Fund.

December and JanuaryTo celebrate the winter season, Plymouth Arts Centre will be transformed with seasonal spirit. We are commissioning a temporary work through an open call inviting artists to submit proposals. At the time of going to print we are eagerly anticipating the arrival of ideas. The selected work will be exhibited during December, accompanied by the Children’s Christmas Card Exhibition in the gallery and the newly commissioned wine label behind the bar. The label for our house wine designed by artist duo Low Profile, has been created to act as a ‘tuning fork,‘ corresponding, when blown into, to the starting notes of the top 20 most requested karaoke songs.

20 December – 4 JanuarySchools Creative ChristmasSchools in Plymouth have been invited to join Plymouth Arts Centre’s membership scheme and

take part in our Christmas exhibition. Students from each of our member schools were invited to design a Christmas Card on the theme of ‘Creative Christmas’ and all the entered designs are to be exhibited over the Christmas period. One design from each school has been selected to be the Plymouth Arts Centre 2014 Christmas Card. These cards will be sent to all of our friends, trustees and supporters.

The four chosen designs are also available to buy as a pack from Plymouth Arts Centre. All of the money raised from the sale of the cards will be invested in our schools programme, which ensures that teachers and pupils have opportunities to engage with and benefit from contemporary art and cinema. The Christmas card exhibition has been sponsored by Kingfisher Print and Design.

Artist’s Talk: plan bplan b (artists Sophia New and Daniel Belasco Rogers) have been working together since 2001, making performance, audio, durational and participatory work. Previous projects have resulted in theatre performance, works on paper, walks and installations in locations as diverse as airports, shop windows, open fields and even on bicycles.

Using locative media and data collection, plan b have worked across Europe mapping their daily journeys, changing moods and exchanged text messages. In gathering such detailed records they draw attention to how much information can be collected and sold by faceless companies but also open their everyday movements for examination with unusual candidness.

In Walk On, plan b’s All GPS Traces in Berlin, 2011 can be seen at Plymouth Arts Centre and in this talk,

hosted by PAC Home, the artists will talk about how it is to have a continuous record of everywhere they go, examine this ‘drawing of their lives’ and other ways they have devised to make this data tangible, and talk about their deliberate merging of the everyday and their artistic activities. Booking is advisable to guarantee your place.

Fri 31 Oct 6pmSat 1 Nov 8pmSun 2 Nov 5.30pmTues 4 Nov 8.30pmWed 5 Nov 2.30pm & 6pmThur 6 Nov 8.30pm

Dir. Lone Scherfig, UK, 2014, 120 mins.Cast. Max Irons, Sam Claflin, Douglas Booth, Natalie Dormer.

Set amongst the privileged elite of Oxford University, The Riot Club follows Miles (Max Irons) and Alistair (Sam Claflin), two first year students determined to join the infamous Riot Club, where reputations can be made or destroyed over the course of a single evening. The Riot Club is directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education). It is adapted by Laura Wade from her critically-acclaimed play, Posh.

Manuscripts Don’t Burn(TBC)

Fri 31 Oct 8.15pmSat 1 Nov 2pm & 5pmSun 2 Nov 8pmTues 4 Nov 5.45pmWed 5 Nov 8.15pmThur 6 Nov 5.45pm

Dir. Mohammad Rasoulof, Iran, 2013, 134 mins, subtitled. Cast. Anonymous.

Rasoulof’s film, based on actual events from the nineties, is a masterwork of understatement. The movie shifts between various older journalists—labeled merely “intellectuals” by the government authorities tracking them down—and the conflicted hit men forced to torture and murder them. But rather than relish in the stark proceedings, Manuscripts Don’t Burn preys on its viewers’ imagination, leaving several deaths and other dreary outcomes off-screen. Unlike other Iranian films, its chilly, muted colors, claustrophobic framings and understated performances by an excellent cast recall ‘70s American films like The Conversation and Klute. Banned from his home country, Rasoulof currently resides in Europe, while the rest of the cast and crew are not named for the sake of their safety.

Maps to the Stars (18)

Fri 7 Nov 6pmSat 8 Nov 8pmSun 9 Nov 5.30pmTues 11 Nov 8.30pmWed 12 Nov 2.30pm & 6pmThur 13 Nov 8.30pm

Dir. David Cronenberg, 2014, US/Canada, 112 mins. Cast. Julianne Moore, John Cusack, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska

Cronenberg’s wildly entertaining satire on modern Hollywood takes a trip into the darkly comic heart of a Hollywood family chasing celebrity, one another, and the relentless ghosts of their pasts. This is a secret-filled family on the verge of implosion and Cronenberg (A History of Violence) forges both a wicked social satire and a very human ghost story from our celebrity-obsessed culture. The film revolves around a burn-scarred girl (Wasikowska) with dreams of meeting celebrities, a fading actress (Moore, channeling Sunset Boulevard’s Norma Desmond) who strives to land the role her mother made famous in yet another remake, and a child superstar (Evan Bird). These strands, and more, will connect to reveal the vile truth beneath the veneer of the movies.

Effie Gray (TBC)

Fri 7 Nov 8.30pmSat 8 Nov 2.30pm & 5.30pmSun 9 Nov 8pmTues 11 Nov 6pmWed 12 Nov 8.30pmThur 13 Nov 6pmSat 15 Nov 8.15pmWed 19 Nov 2.30pm

Dir. Richard Laxton, UK, 2014, 100 mins.Cast. Dakota Fanning, Emma Thompson, Greg Wise, Julie Walters.

A passion project for Emma Thompson, this compelling drama explores the true story of Effie Gray (Fanning), the bride of John Ruskin (Wise). When Ruskin wished to dissolve their short marriage, he noted to his lawyer that Effie was “not formed to excite passion... there were certain circumstances in her person that completely checked it”. This famous episode became a metaphor for Victorian innocence, prudishness and tabloid salaciousness. Thompson’s mature and intelligent screenplay explores the truth of the breakdown of their marriage, its eventual annulment and Effie’s new relationship with one of Ruskin’s acolytes (the painter John Everett Millais), in this handsomely shot, beautifully performed film.

Gone Girl (18)

Fri 14 Nov 8.15pmSat 15 Nov 2pm & 5pmSun 16 Nov 8pmTues 18 Nov 5.30pmWed 19 Nov 8.15pmThur 20 Nov 11am (BIB) & 5.30pm

Dir. David Fincher, US, 2014, 149 mins.Cast. Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris.

Fincher’s adaptation of Flynn’s international bestseller is a taut psychological thriller, which magnifies the frustrations and lies of a dysfunctional marriage. Affleck is Nick Dunne, whose wife Amy (Pike) goes missing. Under intense scrutiny from the police and the media, Nick’s lies, deceits and odd behaviour have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife? What follows is an engrossing and entertaining thriller, but also a forensic examination of a relationship and a critique of invasive media coverage. The complex narrative is brilliantly handled by Fincher as he keeps the truth just far enough out of reach. With wonderfully cool performances from the two leads and a crackling script from Flynn laced with cynicism and dark humour.

Violette (15)

Fri 14 Nov 5.30pmSun 16 Nov 5pmTues 18 Nov 8.30pmWed 19 Nov 5.30pm Thurs 20 Nov 8.30pm

Dir. Martin Provost, France, 2013, 139 mins, subtitled.Cast. Emmanuelle Devos, Sandrine Kiberlain.

Violette is a haunting biopic of French novelist Violette Leduc. Set in Paris in the final years of WWII, Violette (Devos) is living with writer Maurice Sachs. Becoming part of Simone de Beauvoir’s (Kiberlain) circle, she develops a deep love for the iconic writer and philosopher, and de Beauvoir rewards Violette’s trust by introducing her to other contemporary cultural figures including Sartre, Cocteau, Genet and Camus. Forcing herself to continue writing despite setbacks, the success of her bestselling memoir La Bâtarde in 1964 enables her to envisage a life supported by her writing. Gorgeously shot and acted, this is a profound and imaginative examination of an artist whose sexually honest, directly emotional writing was ahead of its time.

Glyndebourne – The Cunning Little Vixen (12A)

Sun 23 Nov 5pmStandard £15, Conc £12.50, under 16s £10

Conductor Vladimir Jurowski, Director Melly Still, 145 mins.

Don’t miss Glyndebourne’s limited release of Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen. Melly Still’s playful production provides the perfect Sunday afternoon escape for all the family... Perhaps the only opera to be inspired by a newspaper cartoon strip. Every morning Janacek would catch up with the latest exploits of the mischievous vixen Bystrouška. He became such a dedicated follower of her adventures that he responded with an outpouring of music which evokes the wooded rolling hills of the composer’s homeland of Moravia. Melly Still’s ‘colourful and joyous’ (Wall Street Journal) Festival 2012 interpretation makes the Vixen’s encounter with life in the forest both heart breaking and humorous, and painfully real. “Vixen - the super, vibrant Lucy Crowe - and her foxy “mate” Emma Bell,....are a vocally virile pairing.” The Independent

Mr Turner (12A)

Fri 21 Nov 5.30pmSat 22 Nov 8pmSun 23 Nov 8pmTues 25 Nov 8pmWed 26 Nov 2pm & 5.30pmThur 27 Nov 8pmSat 29 Nov 2pmSun 30 Nov 8pm

Dir. Mike Leigh, UK, 2014, 150 mins.Cast. Timothy Spall, Paul Jesson, Dorothy Atkinson.

Mike Leigh’s vivid and hugely enjoyable portrayal of JMW Turner (Spall, who scooped the Best Actor prize at Cannes) is a luminous portrait of the last 25 years of his life. We observe his relationships with his housekeeper, his children, his scuffles with the Royal Academy and the awkward blooming of his last affair. Leigh recreates some of his best known paintings (among them The Fighting Temeraire, where we see Turner lashed to the mast to experience a storm at sea) in spectacular fashion, but it is the everyday aspects of his life that are the most fascinating. Soulful, sad and joyful, this is a brilliant and visually immaculate work about a complicated and contradictory man. Excellent.

Walk On Film The Woman In Black (?)

Saturday 29 Nov 8pm Bar open from 7pmPlympton Guildhall

Dir. James Watkins, UK, 2012, 91 mins. Cast. Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer.

In the great tradition of ghost stories at Christmas we are very excited, and a little bit spooked, to bring you a very special screening in a venue well known for its paranormal activity. Starring Daniel Radcliffe as Arthur Kipps, a widowed young lawyer who is called in to settle the affairs of the mysterious Eel Marsh House. Little does he know about the cause behind the strange deaths around the village….Properly chilling and with jumps a plenty, this is the perfect winter’s night entertainment.

Join us on our final Walk On Film event, starting with a guided film walk around Plympton led by Jo Loosemore and Belinda Dixon as they explore the mysteries of some of the oldest parts of Plymouth, followed by the film screening. Booking for the walk essential.

’71 (15)

Fri 21 Nov 8.30pmSat 22 Nov 2.30pm & 5.30pmTues 25 Nov 5.45pmWed 26 Nov 8.30pmThur 27 Nov 5.45pm

Dir. Yann Demange, UK, 2014, 99 mins.Cast. Jack O’Connell, Charlie Murphy, Sean Harris.

Set in Belfast, ‘71 focuses on the horrors of a British teen soldier, Gary Hook (O’Connell), caught up in a situation he can barely understand. Accidentally abandoned by his unit during a raid, Gary tries to find his way to safety. Unable to tell friend from foe (or indeed informer) and with night closing in, Gary has no idea how to get back to his barracks, and soon becomes a pawn caught up in power struggles between (and within) opposing factions. The script even-handedly depicts the stupidity and all round brutality from both sides of the Troubles. ‘71 is more than a visceral recreation of a bruising period of recent history - it is a brilliantly effective survival thriller.

Dir. Morten Tyldum, UK/USA, 2014, 114 mins.Cast. Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Charles Dance.

The life of Alan Turing, who helped turn the tide of WWII yet was demonised after it, is explored in this stunning drama. The film alternates between three periods of Turing’s life: at Bletchley Park; the interrogation after his arrest for ‘gross indecency,’ and flashbacks to school days and his friendship with a boy named Christopher. Cumberbatch eloquently renders the sharp, logical intelligence and complex impulses that fuel Turing’s ambition and thwart him socially, while Knightley plays his perfect foil, emotionally intelligent and fiercely clever, she not only understands him, she knows how to enable his success.

Northern Soul (15)

Fri 28 Nov 8.30pmSat 29 Nov 8pm

Dir. Elaine Constantine, UK, 2014, 102 mins.Cast. Elliot James Langridge, Ricky Tomlinson, Steve Coogan.

The directorial debut of photographer Elaine Constantine focuses on the musical phenomenon that took hold of the north of England’s youth culture in the 60s and 70s. It’s an authentic, uplifting drama about two friends whose horizons are expanded forever by their discovery of black American soul music, with supporting turns from Steve Coogan, Lisa Stansfield and Ricky Tomlinson amongst others. Covering all aspects of the scene – the obsessive record collecting, the dancing and drug-taking, the emotional rollercoaster all-nighters, and the seductive, irresistible cool of the music, with the very danceable, high octane soundtrack you’d expect – Constantine depicts a generation of young people losing themselves in songs from another country, and gives a real flavour of the euphoria of youthful escapism and self-discovery. Completely infectious.

Le Jour Se Leve (PG)

Tues 2 Dec 6pmWed 3 Dec 8.30pmThur 4 Dec 6pm

Dir. Marcel Carné, France, 1939, 92 mins, subtitled. Cast. Jean Gabin, Jacqueline Laurent, Arletty.

Marcel Carné’s greatest film is a triumph; an exquisitely crafted noir describing an obsessive relationship that leads to a grisly murder. Jean Gabin stars as a factory worker, hounded into jealousy and murder by a cynical seducer, holed up with a gun in an attic surrounded by the police, remembering in flashback how it all started while he waits for the end. A film of its time, it responded so clearly to the doom-laded pessimism felt across Europe on the cusp of WWII that after its 1939 release, it was promptly banned on the grounds of demoralisation. This 75th anniversary, gloriously restored version includes new, previously censored scenes that will be seen by audiences for the very first time.

Fri 5 Dec 6pmSat 6 Dec 2.30pmSun 7 Dec 8pmTues 9 Dec 8.30pmWed 10 Dec 2.30pm & 6pmThur 11 Dec 8.30pm

Dir. Pawel Pawlikowski, Poland/Denmark, 2013, 80 mins, subtitled. Cast. Agata Kulesza, Agata Trzebuchowska, David Ogrodnik.

An exquisite black-and-white drama filmed in Pawlikowski’s native Poland and set in 1960. Anna is a young novice nun who is sent to visit her hitherto unknown aunt - a judge nicknamed ‘Red Wanda’ for her zeal as a former prosecutor of enemies of the state who dispassionately reveals that Anna was born into a Jewish family and that her parents were murdered during the war. At turns a road movie, a coming-of-age story and a portrait of a country trying to evolve past Stalinist bleakness while still burdened by terrible WWII secrets - it never preaches and never over-explains; Pawlikowski choosing instead to show with delicacy, humour and luminous simplicity the way in which these women must navigate lives irrevocably affected by history.

Withnail & I (15)

Fri 5 Dec 8.30pmSat 6 Dec 8pmTues 9 Dec 6pm

Dir. Bruce Robinson, UK, 1987, 103 mins.Cast. Richard E. Grant, Paul McGann, Richard Griffiths, Ralph Brown.

In a sparkling new digital print, the UK’s greatest film has been lovingly restored so a whole new audience can experience the joy that is Withnail for the first time and those who already love it can sit in front of the big screen and shout quotes at it! Withnail (Grant) and ‘I’ (McGann) are two ‘resting’ actors living in squalor in late 60’s Camden. In an attempt to get away from it all they go on holiday by accident to Uncle Monty’s (Griffiths) cottage in the country. This is cinematic perfection, from the cast, to the verbal dexterity of the screenplay and the seam of melancholy that runs through the blackest comedy. Come and demand “the finest wines available to humanity” and sit back and enjoy the trip.

Dir. Paolo Virzi, Italy, 2014, 108 mins, subtitled.Cast. Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Valeria Golino, Fabrizio Gifuni.

We open on a dark, snowy night in northern Italy—and begin at the end. Approaching a stranger’s tragic death from three vastly different perspectives, the lives of two families, at first only loosely linked by their teenagers’ relationship, overlap in multitudinous ways to devastating effect. Valeria Golino and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, two of Italy’s leading actresses, star in a story based on Stephen Amidon’s best-selling book of the same name that twists love, class, and ambition into a singular, true-life story. As the players tumble toward an ill-fated event in which they are inextricably linked, Paolo Virzi’s refined three-chapter tale reveals a cultural and systemic disparity in the value of human life.

With the government hot on his trail, E.T. must try to get back to his own kind; otherwise life under a microscope is the fate that awaits him. Spielberg’s masterpiece is beautifully made and only the hardest heart could fail to shed a tear by the time the curtains close.

As a special Christmas present for those of you who missed seeing this at our Open Air Cinema this summer, warm up your vocal chords and start your Christmas party early with a bit of fun and a good old sing-song. Danny and Sandy fall in love one summer and are reunited when term starts and they bump into each other again. Travolta and Newton-John are forever in our hearts as the star-crossed lovers and the impressive supporting cast reads like a “who’s who” in this quintessential musical about the fabulous ‘50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade – it’s an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock n’roll!
