Opening Pressures

Opening pressure [mmH2O /inH2O] is the difference between the water level upstream and the water level

downstream in the submerged case and to the invert of the pipe in the open air case. The opening pressure data

presented in the technical specifications is measured with reference points according to Fig.1. Testing of the opening

pressure is performed at room temperature.

Head Loss

The head loss diagram presents an empirical model with test data from a third party institute. The reference points for

the head loss tests are the same as the horizontal opening pressure. The head loss presented includes all head loss

associated with the WaStop installed in an outlet either open air- or submerged outflow. In the case when the head

loss of a particular outlet is known before the installation this head loss could be subtracted from the head loss

presented in the technical specification for an accurate estimate of the head loss for the outlet after installation of a

WaStop check valve. For more information about head loss contact Wapro.

Maximum Flow Velocity

Maximum flow velocity is a recommendation that yields the longest service life. Both velocity and volume flow refers

to the flow in the pipe in which the WaStop is installed. Since the flow area of the WaStop is slightly smaller than the

pipe, the actual max flow velocity through the WaStop is higher than the max flow velocity stated in the technical

specification. If an application demands higher flow than stated in the technical specifications contact Wapro.

1. GENERAL

Wastop® membrane check valves shall be used as specified by engineers in drawings, or as

per contractors’ requirements.

Standard materials of construction:

Pipe: Stainless steel EN1.4301/AISI 304 or EN1.4404/AISI 316 alternatively PE/PVC

Membrane: Polyurethane (PU), Silicone (MVQ) or EPDM

Sealing/Gasket: EPDM or chloroprene

1.1. Submittals

1.2. Quality assurance

1.2.1. Wapro AB has a quality assurance program to verify that the check valves fulfill

the specified backpressure, capabilities, opening and closing pressure. Wastop®

inline check valves are quality tested according to requirements prior to delivery.

The manufacturer shall have at least 15 years’ experience designing and

manufacturing of WaStop® style inline membrane check valves.

1.2.2. Documented head loss tests are to be provided by the manufacturer. These

are to be third party tests performed by a hydraulic testing institute and shall

show head loss in open air and submerged conditions. Vertical opening pressure

shall be tested and documented.

1.2.3. Check Valves shall be tested and certified according the European standard

EN 13564-1:2002 for anti-flooding devices where applicable.

2. PRODUCTS

2.1. Function

The check valves shall be designed to operate in installations using flanges, flat irons, slide

muffs, joint couplings or custom made brackets. The check valve should be able to be

installed on an inlet, or outlet, vertically, horizontally, inside existing pipes, or between two

pipes. The housing of the valve should be of stainless steel and less than or equal to 3mm

(1/8”) thick to minimize the reduction of the flow area or PVC/PE. The membrane should

be conical and should be attached to the housing with bolts or rivets along the top of the

membrane, and the outlet side of the housing allowing maximum flow through the

membrane.

The check valve should have a pulsating flow, opening and closing at the specific levels

specified in the technical specification.

When the pressure on the upstream side of the valve exceeds the opening pressure the

valve will open and allow flow through the valve. At a pre-determined pressure the valve

will close leaving a pre-determined level of water upstream and prevent the upstream

pipe drying out.

2.2. Installation

Installation shall be conducted according to the manufacturers written instructions. All

valves shall be marked with a unique serial number and flow direction reference.

2.3. Manufacturer

All valves shall be of Wastop® type and manufactured by Wapro AB, Sweden.

Manufacturers name, model number, description and serial number shall be marked on

the check valve.

2.5. Design requirements

2.5.1. Inline check valve shall withstand up to 8 meters / 26’ water column (7.25 psi)

back pressure depending on the dimension and durometer of the membrane.

2.5.2. Inline check valve shall withstand a velocity up to to 4m/s (13 fps).

2.5.3. Inline check valve membrane shall be fully closed and sealed in the normal

state when no flow of water/liquid occurs through the pipe

2.5.4. Each inline check valve shall be labelled with flow direction and unique serial

number.

2.5.5. Inline check valve shall be reversible allowing installation at inlet or outlet.

2.5.6. Inline check valve shall not allow the upstream pipe to empty completely.

2.5.7. Inline check valve shall not create a step inside the pipe greater than 6,35mm

(1/4”)

2.5.8. The membrane shall withstand abrasives such as sand, detritus and normal

chemicals found in waste water and shall be made of polyurethane (PU),

silicone (MVQ) or EPDM

2.5.9. The Inline check valve membrane shall create a pulsating flow through the

valve which flushes the pipe clean from debris such as sand, mud, sediment.

2.5.10. Inline check valve membrane shall be:

(1) mounted in a stainless steel housing that, during installation, is to be

inserted as-is on site into an existing pipe, or;

Wapro AB accepts no responsibility for incor-rect installation or the improper use of this product. Incorrect installation can cause injury, reduce the valve lifetime or damage other mat-ing pipe products. Please read the following information before installing the WaStop® check valve. If you have any questions regarding installation please call your local WaStop reseller.

STORAGE• The WaStop® check valve should be stored in a cool dry location with good ventilation.• The valves should not have anything inserted into either end touching the membrane during storage.• Don’t drop, put undue pressure upon, or twist the pipe or membrane as damage may occur.• The smaller dimension valve should be stored in the box they were delivered in. Larger valves should be stored in a safe location

where tampering cannot occur.• Avoid unnecessary exposure to light and chemicals. • Store all WaStops in a vertical position with the end of the cone up. If this is not possible ensure the housing of the valve is supported

to ensure ovality does not occur.

TERMINOLOGYFlow direction: Normal direction of flowExisting pipe: An existing pipe into which WaStop® will be inserted.Joint coupling: A flexible coupling joining the existing pipe and the WaStop®. Expansion bolt: A bolt having an attachment that expands as the bolt is driven into a surface.Rubber seal: A seal that ensures no leakage between the inside of the existing pipe and the WaStop®.Back pressure: The fluid pressure exerted against the valve. Usually measured in feet or meters of fluid above the invert of the pipe.Membrane: The elastomer conical membrane inside the WaStop® pipe.WaStop® pipe: The outer casing (housing) of the WaStop® membrane.

Wapro AB Limited Warranty

Wapro will remedy defects in material and/or workmanship in any new Wapro valve for a period of two (2) years from the documented date of purchase so long as the valve has been used in accordance with Wapro’s instructions and recommendations and under normal operating conditions. The warranty does not cover damage to the valve caused by external mechanical forces, such as interference from humans, animals or machines, nor is the warranty valid if the valve has been modified or altered in any way post-production. Furthermore, the warranty is not valid (a) if the valve is damaged due to exposure to high concentrations of chemical substances, (b) if the valve is damaged due to pressure surges and/or vacuum within the valve, (c) the warranty is invalid if flow velocity exceeds 2m/s through a standard WaStop, or 4m/s through a high pressure kit adapted WaStop, and (d) if malfunctions are caused by other equipment. To request warranty service, the buyer should contact the WaStop dealer where the valve was purchased within a reasonable time after discovering any defects. The valve serial number must be quoted in the case of a warranty claim. Wapro’s liability is limited to the replacement or repair of the defective valve. Wapro will not assume costs incurred for removal of defective valves or subsequent installation of replacement valves. Furthermore, Wapro will not assume transportation costs of damaged valves or replacement valves.
