Dear PMANC Members,
I hope everyone who attended Expo last month enjoyed your time in Las Vegas. Theenergy level and enthusiasm from the attendees was great to see this year as we alllaunch into what I believe will be a record year for all of us. PPAI reports that 10,850distributors were in attendance and exhibitors staffed 3,176 booths.
It is hard to believe it February is already gone. The PMANCBoard Directors met this month and have many excitingprojects in the works. I would like to take a few minutes tomention these efforts on behalf of our association.Advantage Roadshows were held in three locations in the BayArea. Otis Veteto and MaryAnne Bobrow staffed theSacramento show, and Steve Klein and I staffed the Milpitas andSouth San Francisco shows. This gives us additional exposure topotential new trade area members. Thank you Otis, Steve, andMaryAnne for your time and efforts.
Our Monterey Showcase (May 9 ‐10th) is two and one‐half months away and theShowcase committee is aggressively fleshing out all the details behind this highlyanticipated tradeshow. We are running 31% ahead of booth sales versus same time lastyear. If you are interested in joining in the committee’s efforts, please feel free tocontact myself at 415‐328‐5492 or Jeff Thomas, our Showcase [email protected], phone: 707‐586‐1182.
Promotional Products Work Week (Feb 25 – Mar 1) is a Regional Association Council(RAC) initiative. What is it? This is an opportunity for all of us to increase the visibilityof our industry’s impact on the economy while donating excess promotional productsfitting the “school supplies” category to PMANC area charities. Please consider gettinginventory out of your offices (and off your books) while donating to less fortunateindividuals within the communities that we call home. A task force is being assembledto handle all of the details from donation solicitation, drop off locations and mediacoverage for PMANC at the writing of this letter. If you are available to participate inthis task force, please email me or MaryAnne Bobrow at PMANC. Phone 916.242.0052or email [email protected].
Conversation Cafes, which has been part of our quarterly networking events in multiplelocations, are held on a designated day and are evolving into a different format. March12th is the first date.
As you can see we have lots going on. Thank you for your membership. I encourage allof you to think of a way in which you can volunteer your unique skill to helping PMANCbe a strong, relevant and worthwhile Association.
Please let me know how I can help make your membership more valuable to yourbusiness and make you more money this year.
Best regards.Diana FayPMANC 2013 President

A Message From PPAI – Health Care Reform—How to calculate hours worked by commissioned salespeople
From Paul Bellantone:
It was good seeing so many of you at The PPAI Expo 2013 in Las Vegas. I hope you found the industry’s premier eventto be both enjoyable and productive.
As you all know, health care responsibilities for “large” employers are rapidly approaching in 2014. What you may notknow is that the IRS is currently evaluating how to calculate hours worked by commissioned salespeople to determineif that employee is “full time” for the purposes of the health care reform law. We received a number of questionsabout this topic during The Expo last week and asked that PPAI’s counsel outline the various options the IRS hasidentified to help you make that calculation. The information can be located here, PPAI COMMISSION ACTIVITY ANDHEALTH CARE REFORM.
PPAI also has a “planning tool” that can also help you work through some of these issues. It can be found at:http://www.ppai.org/inside‐ppai/ppai‐law/Pages/CheckUPResource.aspx.

News To Use From PPAI’s Town HallBy MaryAnne Bobrow, PMANC Executive Director
I attended the PPAI Town Hall at Expo in Las Vegas. It was a‘first‐time’ event for me, so I had nopreconceived expectations. The roomwas full but not especially large. Themore I sat through the Town Hall, themore I wished additional PMANCmembers could have been there. Theinformation was that good.
The Town Hall was presided over bySteven Meyer, MA, PPAI Board
Chairman, Marc Simon, PPAI Incoming Board Chairman, andPaul Bellantone, CAE, PPAI President and CEO.
The objective of the Town Hall was to have a conversationabout PPAI and its goals, its members, the industry, andopportunity for growth and success.
PPAI currently has more than 10,600members in six dues‐paying categories, with experience levels ranging from twoweeks to 130+ years.
The diversity of the membershipsometimes makes it difficult for PPAI tomake decisions that please everyone.During its recent strategic planningsessions, PPAI created a vision that looks beyond anyindividual member segment and instead champions andadvances the Promotional Products Industry.. PPAI’s missionis fulfilled by speaking to the broader industry andmarketplace by following four simple goals:
1. To delivery great member value2. To advocate for the industry3. To engage the global
marketplace4. To manage an efficient,
progressive, and professional organization.
In working to achieve Goal One, PPAI setout to meet with regional association members in TownHalls—including PMANC’s in February 2012—and inwebinars.
Goal Two will be achieved when PPAI is perceived as atrusted authority and voice for the industry. To accomplishthis correctly, in each congressional district in the UnitedStates there will be four or five individuals who can educateCongress on the industry. The other piece of this puzzle is forCongress to understand what we in the promotional productsindustry do. The effective way to accomplish this is to get theright marketing message out, and determine who will be thekey industry contract. PPAI has a great cadre of volunteers, but it is imperative to get more of the membership involved.
Goal Three looks toward more global involvement and a pathto achieve that, particularly for product safety and businessgrowth. It is all about awareness, influence, and presence.Presently, residents of Canada can choose to be internationalmembers or full members.
Goal Four envisions PPAI, which is already run like a business, using resources more effectively in advancing the goals of theAssociation.
Within PPAI, 95% of distributor members realize less thanone million dollar in annual sales.
96% of distributors report less than $2.5 million in annualsales, accounting for nearly half of the industry’s $17.7billion. What that also means is that the other 4%(distributors reporting over $2.5 million) account for theother half.
76% of all supplier members’ sales areless than $1 million. 96% of all suppliermembers report less than $15 million insales. These statistics are based onwhat members report when remittingdues payments.
PPAI is positioning itself to continue tomeet the needs of a dynamic
marketplace. Of note is:
1. Distributors pay more in dues than suppliers2. PPAI dues are now a larger source of revenue than
EXPO, even though EXPO continues to beprofitable.
3. Legislative and product safety are now among the top five benefits valued by members.
PPAI will partner with others to focus onthe four goals and will continue tocustomize the PPAI member experience. For small businesses, PPAI asks, “Whatcan we give you to do better business?”
For the medium‐sized businesses, PPAI asks, How can wehelp you do better business?” For large businesses, PPAIasks, “What should we be working on together?”
After two consecutive years of decline, 2010 and 2011experienced growth:

News to Use from PPAI’s Town Hall(Continued from Page 15)
After 14 consecutive quarters of growth, a 5‐6% growth rateis projected for the current year.
However, 2011 at $17.72 billion is just slightly ahead of2004’s $17.31 billion.
In 2012, the first three quarters showed increases:
1st Quarter = Distributors/Suppliers +6%2nd Quarter = Distributors/Suppliers +5%3rd Quarter = Distributors/Suppliers +6%4th Quarter = Distributors, 56% up, 15% down
and 29% same whileSuppliers, 53% up, 12% down, and 35% same
In 2011, only seven out of ten distributors saw an increase inrevenue and only 50% saw an increase in profitability.
In comparison to other advertising media, our industry isdoing well. “Other advertising media” includes direct mail, television, internet, point of purchase, cable TV, newspapers, business magazines, event sponsorships, radio consumermagazines, billboards, product placement, and mobile phoneadvertising.
Of the 14 competitive advertising/media PPAI tracks, promotional products advanced 7.2% while eleven othershad an increase and three were flat or down. Of the elevenshowing in increase in 2011, only three grew faster thanpromotional products:
Promotional products = 7.2% to $17.7 billionCable TV = 7.8% to $17.7 billionInternet advertising = 22% to $21.8 billionMobile phone advertising = 149% to 1.6 billion
While PPAI members have been prepared to compete for alarger share of the promotional products spend, they havenot been prepared to compete against other media.
As of the Town Hall, EXPO had 9,400 attendees (final statsput that number at well over 10,000) for a 10% increase, witheducational program attendance up significantly.
PPAI partnered with ASI on an advocate program, where itwas co‐branded as one voice, one person.
Facts and figures always help me to drive home points whenselling someone on a product or service. Hopefully, the onespresented here will help PMANC members in theirbusinesses.
