PMC with piston-rod locking devicePMC series cylinders can be supplied with a powerful piston-rod locking device. The spring actuated - air release type lockingdevice is able to hold the piston rod in any position along the stroke. Inthe absence of signal pressure, full holding force is applied to thepiston rod. The locking device is released by applying a minimumsignal pressure of 400 kPa (4 bar, 58PSI).

Locking device is not a brakeThis device is not designed to stop a moving load. The piston rod mustbe stationary when the locking device is actuated

RetrofittingPiston rod locks should be called for in the order code as retrofittingthese devices in the field is not economical.

Smooth profile cylindersAlthough the above diagram depicts a tie rod type cylinder, piston rodlocking devices are also available with smooth profile cylinders in32mm through 100mm bore sizes.

Stop Tubes

The use of a stop tube is not not not not not mandatory. However, extending the pistonrod bearing length at the end of the out-stroke, a stop tube reduces theload on the gland bush and, thereby, increases the cylinder service life.Depending on the application, a stop tube may be desirable if the strokelength plus any extra rod extension in millimetres multiplied by the strokefactor exceeds 1200 mm. The diagrams on this page detail the relevantstroke factors and recommended stop tube lengths for cylinders mountedin a horizontal plane. A shorter stop tube, or no stop tube, may suffice fora cylinder having an orientation other than horizontal. Forrecommendations please refer application details to Parker.

The use of a stop tube does not shorten the cylinder stroke specified bythe customer. It does, however, increase the overall length of the cylinderby the length of the stop tube used.

Piston Rod Buckling

Piston rods subjected to certain compression loads may buckle if thestroke length plus any extra rod extension in millimetres multiplied by thestroke factor exceeds 700 mm. The diagrams on this page detail therelevant stroke factors and load/stroke limits for each standard roddiameter. To avoid the risk of piston rod buckling the intersection of theline representing the load and the line representing the stroke lengthtimes stroke factor must be below the line representing the rod diameter.
