It's Our 10th Birthday! It's Our 10th Birthday! It's Our 10th Birthday! We started Old Friends ten years ago. Yikes! We've gone from Rich in Dallas and Narrow Escape to more than 200 retirees that have, at one time or another, called Old Friends home. When you're a kid, a decade seems like forever, but as one who's lived through many decades, they are flying by as fast as Commentator's record-setting mile at Gulfstream Park. That's why, on beautiful mornings, I like to linger in the long shadows cast by our remarkable retirees. On mornings like this, I'm certain there's no better place on the Earth than Old Friends. Every horse greets you as if you're their best pal. This morning, for example, Arson Squad and I'm Charismatic made a synchronized canter toward their food buckets. They both like a little rub on their heads while taking their first bites. Bull Inthe Heather wanted his back scratched - a task I ignore when the temperature is below freezing but is exhilarating to perform when the sun shines. And, of course, there's Commentator bellowing for more than his fair share. After more than a decade, Old Friends has proven the most important thing. We really know how to take care of these Thoroughbreds once they come to us. Everyone in rac- ing can take great pride in our efforts to provide the best care imaginable. The Present The Present The Present The Present We are committed to expansion. Our goal is to create a situation where no Thor- oughbred is denied a dignified retirement. We're constantly thinking outside the box as we aim for that ultimate goal. As everyone who loves racing already knows, timing is everything. During the next month, we have the opportunity to increase our numbers and bring the retirees closer to home. Our friend, Roy Cornett, has purchased the adjoining property and has an option to purchase the land all the way to Ironworks Pike. He is very interested in having Old Friends purchase the greenspace while he pursues development options. In the short term, we are looking to raise $65,000 to build fence, install waterers and construct run-in sheds. Going from one retiree ten years ago to nearly 130 today may seem like rapid growth but we have dozens of retirees awaiting accommodations at Old Friends. The adjacent property could mean homes for at least 30 more deserving Thoroughbreds. After ten years, I guess I'm still singing the same old song. The support you've given us has been unbelievable. But what drives me every day is the need for more room for more athletes. We've received more than our fair share of accolades. And, I’m both Continued on Page 3 Photo © Laura Battles

The World

According to Little Silver Charm

As the official Old Friends spokes-horse I think I speak for all the retirees here - except for a few cranky old stallions who refuse to acknowledge the inevita-bility of my leadership - when I say that we have come a long way since that day, ten years ago, when I first proposed the idea of Old Friends to Michael. Frankly, I think we might have come even further if he had taken my advice a long time ago about how to raise money. He likes to say that his idea of fund-raising is NOT to ask people for donations. Did you ever hear anything so silly? My whole fabulous career has been built on asking for exactly what I want and putting my little hoof out for more. And guess what? It works. Michael may be reluctant to ask for donations, but I'm not. The little horse has to carry the day, as usual!

How can I help? We hear that a lot here at Old Friends. Makes me smile every time to hear that these wonderful horses touch so many people who actually want to DO something to help. We have a page on our website – oldfriendsequine.org - of ideas for folks who want to help. There are a lot of ways to help, and I always say “think out of the stall”. And people do! Contributions come in all shapes and sizes and in many different ways - estate planning, monthly donations, kids asking for donations instead of birthday gifts to help our horses, Eagle Scouts doing projects with us and Girl Scout troops donating cookie sales money to name just a few. One kind donor overheard us one day talking about our golf carts being broken. She & her husband scouted around for the best utility vehicle and donated a brand new fabulous Kubota vehicle. It's super nice with mud tires so we can feed the horses in all weather. We would not exist without our dedicated and hard working volunteers. Each one brings the best of them-selves here to make a difference for the horses. Why not consider joining them? I once had a grant administrator tell me we wouldn’t get the grant because Old Friends is too successful. That really floored me because the reality is there is always another worthy horse who needs a paddock, water, feed, vet care; in other words, a safe place to call home. However you are moved to contribute, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Our horses are incredi-

bly fortunate to have your support. ~ Sylvia~ Sylvia~ Sylvia~ Sylvia

Continued from Page 1 humbled and appreciative. But that doesn't amount to anything unless we keep pressing forward to create more space so more of these majestic Thoroughbreds can come to us to live out their lives with dignity and respect. The FutureThe FutureThe FutureThe Future Our future goals are simple. Retire more Thoroughbreds by continuing what we are doing – raising money to buy more space – and inviting more fans to visit our retiree’s every day. We would have failed long ago with-out the support of the people who love these animals. I can see Old Friends branches in every racing locale from Gulfstream Park to Emerald Downs where stars that sparkled at those tracks would attract visitors, at-tention and donations. To everyone who donates to Old Friends, I am eter-nally grateful. I know that you know as well as I do, it's not for us, it's for them. And it doesn't get much more satisfying than that. Let's hope that the second decade is even better than the first. Thank you so much.
