Part 1: Introduction to AgilityInthewaterfallmethodofprojectmanagement,itiscommontohaveeachphasecompletedbeforethenext,withallstepsfinishedbeforethecustomerseestheendresultandvalue.Thewaterfallmethodcanbegoodforschedulingandreportingouttostakeholders,butdesigningsystemsupfrontcancreateissuesduringdevelopmentwhenunexpecteddifficultiesinimplementationarise.
In2001,agroupofdevelopersformedthe“AgileAlliance”,committedtomakingachangeinthewaytheymanageprojectsbecausetheirteamswerefailingtodeliveronsoftwarereleases.Awaterfallmethodologyreliedonanexplicitunderstandingoffutureneedsandrequirements,andthiswasnotfeasibleintheproductdevelopmentenvironment.So,theycameupwithagileprocesses,whichembracechange.Themostdistinctdifferencebetweenwaterfallandagileisthewayateammovesthroughthestagesofaproject.Agileteamsdoabitofeachtraditionalphaseallatonce,makingrefinementsandimprovementsuntiltheprojectiscomplete.Testingoccursthroughouttheprojectandnotjustattheend.Releasesaredeliveredregularly,documentationisproducedasneededalongtheway,andcross-functionalteamsareestablished.
Part 2: ScrumScrumwasestablishedin1995whenagroupofsoftwaredeveloperscollaboratedonanadaptiveprojectmanagementframeworkthatismeanttobeflexiblefortheteamusingit.
Therearethreerecognizedrolesinscrum:
• Productowner:ThispersonisresponsibleformaximizingtheROIforthebusiness,andthereforehelpstheteamprioritizethemostvaluablework(fromthebusinessperspective)andmaintainsthevisionfortheproduct.• Scrummaster:Thispersonisanexpertandadvisortotheteam.Inanidealcase,thispersonshouldnothavehis/herowndeliverablesfortheproject;theyshouldfocusonfacilitat-ingtheworkoftheteamandmakesureallobstaclesareelimi-natedsotheteamcangettheirworkdone.• Teammember:Thisgroupworkstogethertodeliverthedeliv-erablestheycommittedtoforthesprint.
Workisorganizedinto“sprints”.Asprintistacklingasmallpieceofworkandthenfinishingitbeforemovingontoanothersmallpieceofwork.Thefollowingeventscanbeheldduringeachcycle:
• Sprintplanningmeeting:Thegoalofthesprintplanningmeet-ingistohaveasetof“stories”thewholeteambelievescanbedeliveredbytheendofthesprint.• Estimatemeeting:Thiscanhelpinscheduling,andcanbedividedintotaskhours,taskpoints,orbytaskcount.• Dailyscrums:Thesestand-upmeetingsshouldoccureachday,withthesmallprojectteam,andbeasquickanddirectaspossible.• Backloggrooming,orstorytime:Thisiswhennewwork(notinthecurrentsprint)isdiscussed.• Sprintreview:Thishappensattheendofthesprint,andallowstheteamtoshowtheirprogress.• Retrospective:Thisisdedicatedtimeattheendofasprinttoreflectonwhatwaslearnedandwhatcanbeimproved.
