Fort Rock Grange Cancels Spring Events

e increasing spread of COVID-19, evolving state mandates, and concerns about the health of our community, has caused the Fort Rock Grange to cancel the BBQ Beef Dinner and Pie Auction on Saturday, April 25, 2020

e Grange thanks you for your past support of these events, and wishes every person in North Lake County, a healthy and safe spring.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND STAY HEALTHY, LAKE COUNTY!

La Pine Community Health Center in Christmas Valley is thankful for the eff orts and commitment of the residents and visitors of North Lake County to staying healthy! We would also like to thank all of the local retailers who are helping to keep the community healthy by implementing safety measures such as the use of masks, gloves, barriers and restricted access. Your commitment to this community truly shows. We encour-age the local seamstresses who are making masks to check with rst responders (Sheriff ’s department EMS and Fire) and local

retailers to make sure that they have the protective gear that they need to continue to serve the community.

To further support your eff orts in staying healthy, our health center, located in the North Lake Health District Medical Center, continues to be open and ready to provide primary care for you and your families, along with all of our other services. We also have a triage area set up for patients who are experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever or shortness of breath. Symptomatic patients will be assessed at the North-east area of the parking lot and then taken into an exam room through the ambulance entrance to help reduce the risk of virus exposure. PLEASE CALL BEFORE coming to the health center so we can let you know the appropriate entrance to come to.

If we all continue to practice social-distancing protocols and continue to wear masks when we must be out in public, it will help reduce the risk of a local outbreak and support those among us with underlying complex medical conditions and suppressed immune systems.Together, we will get through this. It takes all of us working together in support of one another.  ank you for doing your part!

EXOTIC PLANTSCAMPHOR TREE: Cimmamomum camphora (L.) J.S Presl

Laurel Family LAURACEAE

e Fragrant wood of the camphor tree has traveled the world over in the form of nely wrought sailors’ chests. Strong and durable, resistant to the ravages of salt air, repellent to moths, and immune to the attacks of most insects, the wood has protected the clothes of many a seaman. It’s most impor-tant constituent in this regards is a chemical known as 2 - bornanone. Better known as camphor, this chemical is a potent moth repellent.

e camphor tree is native to eastern Asia. Standing up to 100 feet, spreading equally as wide, and lling the air with sweet fragrance during the owering season, it lives in terrain between 4,000 and

7,000 feet above sea level. In cultivation, they are not so impressive. Grown for their leathery leaves rather than their durable wood, they are kept pruned to 5 or 6 feet tall. e aromatic leaves are har-vested three or four times a year, and the oil is extracted and distilled into colorless camphor crystals shipped all over the world.

Camphor extraction has been going on in the Orient for over 1,000 years, but only in the past century have the leaves been the main source. Previously the trunks, roots and branches of 70 to 80 year old trees were chopped and steam distilled. But world demand surged in the 19th century, when camphor came to be regarded as an all round no strum in Europe and the United States, and the supply of trees became depleted. Hence, more effi cient methods were developed.

It was once a common practice to wear a little bag of camphor crystals around the neck to cure a cold or related illness. Camphor oil was freely applied to ease the pains of bruises, sprains, in ammations, gout, and rheumatic joints and it was taken internally to treat hysteria, epilepsy, and heart problems. e fumes were used to treat asthma, bronchitis, emphysema as well as other respiratory maladies.

Scientist found prolonged exposure to the fumes and ingestion of the camphor may cause poisoning hence, medical use in the United States is limited to lotions that relieve super cial pain and itching. White camphor oil has removed poison substance and in cough drops, candies, and so drinks.

Non medical products using camphor are deodorants, disinfectants, explosives, insecticides, paint sol-vents, perfumes and soaps. Camphor wood is still available, but it is extremely expensive, if you wish to make a moth proof chest.
