Domain Knowledge &

Other Knowledge Areas

• Essential activities related to project execution is based on domain knowledge. The technology involved, how to build the product, create the services or get the required results depend on the domain knowledge

• Systematic project planning and execution, irrespective of the domain areas needs skills built on specific knowledge areas

• There are nine knowledge areas identified in PMBOK as necessary

• These relate to skills necessary for planning, executing, controlling and closing a project systematically & efficiently

Knowledge Areas

• These areas can be divided into two clear

categories

– Knowledge areas that help execute a project

directly

– Knowledge areas that support efficient execution

of projects

Knowledge AreasThat directly influences Project Execution

• Direct knowledge areas have been formalized in

PMBOK as

– Project Integration Knowledge

– Project Scope Management Knowledge

– Project Schedule Management Knowledge

– Project Cost Management Knowledge

– Project Quality Management Knowledge

Knowledge AreasThat Help Support Project Execution

• Supporting Knowledge areas include

– Project communication Management knowledge

– Project Risk Management Knowledge

– Project Procurement Knowledge

– Project Human Resources Management

Knowledge

Project Knowledge AreasHow Are They Relevant

• Project scope has to be defined accurately so that monitoring can be effective and everybody involved knows when it is done!

• Anything that helps time estimates and thus schedules to be correct is essential for execution and on-going monitoring.

• Keeping costs under control starts with realistic budget estimates.

• It is not enough to achieve targets but things need to bee done with required quality levels.

• You must be aware of how all this work together and influence each other. That’s where project integration knowledge is useful.

Project Integration Management Knowledge

• Project success requires coordination of

activities in many different areas

• Knowledge and skill that help coordinate

issues across a project is thus important

• Project integration knowledge area helps

ensure overall project progress

Project Scope Management Knowledge

• What exactly is to be done in the project must be the most crucial thing to do

• Unless scope is define in great details and accurately, it is easy to miss required activities and thus affect the outcomes of the project

• Scope creep is often is issue. Unless the baseline is defined well, detecting, estimate the effect of the scope creep and containing the consequences will be impossible

Project Schedule ManagementKnowledge

• A well designed time schedule takes execution

time estimates of activities, schedules

activities optimally and achieves best possible

overall time plan.

• Intimate knowledge of planning , scheduling

the activities are thus vital.

Project Cost ManagementKnowledge

• Cost estimates have to be accurate to plan the overall expenditure

• Depending on the schedule management plan, cash infusion has to happen at well defined points on the timeline.

• Budget making, cash flow analysis, finance planning and most economical ways of carrying out activities are areas where cost management knowledge is essential

Page 13: Pmpcertification pmbokmadeeasy-knowledge areas

Project Quality ManagementKnowledge

• It is not enough to get the activities completed

somehow.

• Outcomes of these activities must achieve a

defined level of quality

• Knowledge and skills in Quality Management

is thus vital for project execution

Project Communication ManagementKnowledge

• Communication is the binding force that helps a team work as a team and let the team work effectively within the organization

Project Risk ManagementKnowledge

• When working on a project, it is never possible to have complete knowledge about everything

• Actions and decisions taken have, thus, some risk involved

• These needs to be monitored, mitigation plans drawn up and actions taken when some risks become a reality

• Unforeseen opportunities may come up too. The team must be ready to take advantage of such opportunities

• Ability to identify, plan mitigation etc. are necessary skills

Page 16: Pmpcertification pmbokmadeeasy-knowledge areas

Project Procurement ManagementKnowledge

• Necessary condition for project success is that material, tools, services required are available at the right time, at the right time and with the right quality levels

• Skills that make this possible are a necessity• Vendor management, procurement

administration are some skills that are necessary

Page 17: Pmpcertification pmbokmadeeasy-knowledge areas

Project HR Management Knowledge

• Working with human beings and getting the best out of them requires special skills

• Starts with creating the team for the project• Creating a high performance team,

maintaining their high performance levels require special skills

• Project leads and Project Manager will need to be conversant ion these skills
