Peterstown, WV

Students and teachers at Peterstown Middle School have been busy since returning to school 5 days a week. We are getting close to the finish line now. Less than 9 weeks of school left. Please keep up the hard work and let’s finish strong!

Here are some highlights of things we have been doing.

February News

Valentines Cards for Children in the Hospital

A wise individual once said, “Don’t just count your blessings. Be the

blessing other people count on.” The fifth grade students at

Peterstown Middle School were able to show a little love and

hopefully be a blessing to some patients at St .Jude’s Children’s

Hospital this February. Mrs. Nash and her students were excited to

compose and send E-Valentines to children who were hospitalized.

Thank you Mrs. Nash for helping our students learn the importance

of recognizing the struggles that others face and the importance of

being the reason someone has to smile.

February News (continued)

Make Your Own Board Game! Mrs. Ashley Mann’s students have not been bored during her class

but they have been creating their own board games! Students

were given the task of creating and producing a board game and

they have risen to the challenge. An engineering notebook, 3D

printer technology, math, reading, writing and communication skills

are among just a few of the academic standards being covered

during this project. Most of the students are currently in the phase

of plotting out and printing the boards and pieces for their games.

Once the activity is complete, the students will be presenting their

games to their peers for review and, of course, some friendly

competition. This activity has allowed students at PMS and MVS to

collaborate to make a game come to life. We are excited to see

what the students produce and the fun that can be had. Who ever

said school can’t be about fun and games?!?

March News

Celebrate Math with Pi Day

March 14 is one of our favorite days at PMS. You may be

wondering why we like it? Why, Pi and pie, of course! It is the one

day of the year that we can enjoy some math and a tasty treat.

Mrs. Malory McPherson had some fun and filling activities related

to 3/14/2021 and 3.14 for her seventh grade students. And,

anyone who know Mrs. Terri Walker knows that she was rocking

her Pi shirt, socks and earrings in honor of the mathematically

important day. March 14 is a day we look forward to every spring!

March News (continued)

More Math Fun with Easter Activities

Seventh grade students enjoyed some sidewalk chalk, relay races

and an Easter egg hunt at the end of March as they reviewed math

concepts and had a little fun doing so. Mrs. McPherson utilized

sidewalk chalk, a childhood favorite for most, to place equations on

the sidewalk in front of the school. Students were encouraged to

solve equations in a relay style activity which then led to an Easter

egg hunt. Mrs. McPherson, thank you for realizing that knowledge in

action is a beautiful thing!

April News

Autism Awareness

April is Autism Awareness month and PMS is celebrating awareness

of Autism and other exceptionalities through a variety of activities.

Mrs. Jodi Bowers challenged students with an activity entitled “Talk

to Me”. This activity required a “communicator” to tell a group of

students how to place various items to form a pattern. As the activity

progressed, the communicators were given an exceptionality. They

maybe blind, nonverbal, unable to use their hands, etc. At the end of

the activity, students were encouraged to discuss how they felt being

limited in communication or physical skills. In addition to this activity,

bulletin boards have been constructed to bring awareness and

pinwheels are visible on the front lawn. We look forward to being

able to complete many more activities to build awareness. Stay

tuned for more in the next newsletter…

Teacher and Service Employee of the Month:

February – Samantha Sizemore and Annette Yates

When you think about teacher of the month, you think “special”.

Peterstown Middle School’s teacher of the month for February is

truly one of a kind and is very “special” to our staff. Ms. Samantha

Sizemore, special education teacher for grades 5-8, brings light

and life to her students and is truly a pleasure to work with. Ms.

Sizemore, thank you for the gifts that you bring to our staff and the

wisdom that you impart to your students. We appreciate you and

your patience!

Long after the school day is finished and most of us are nestled in

our beds, someone is still at the school working to make sure that it

is sanitized for the next school day. Mrs. Annette Yates is the last

person to leave each night after she disinfects the whole school.

Thanks to her tireless efforts, the school has been extra clean in an

effort to keep us healthy and happy. Mrs. Yates, thank you for all

you do!

March – Ashley Williams and Annette Hill

In a lab upstairs at PMS is a teacher with a lot of energy who is

always in motion. One could do an observation, investigation or

form a hypothesis about who it is. If you predicted our very own

“Mad Scientist”, Mrs. Ashley Williams, your inference was correct.

Whether she is teaching the periodic table, Punnett squares, or

completing a scientific lab, Mrs. Williams does so with gusto and a

smile. Mrs. Williams, thank you for making sure we are safe and

learning lots of interesting scientific facts. We appreciate you and

your dedication to our science department.

Teacher and Service Employee of the Month (continued):

March often leads us to think of basketball and “March Madness”.

On any given day, dropping by the office can be a reminder of

March Madness but everything is under control thanks to our March

service employee of the month, Annette Hill. Annette is a phone

answering, bus note taking, data entering, door opening, help

everyone with everything, guru. Without Annette, the office could fall

apart at any moment. Annette, we appreciate all you do to keep us

afloat, sane and things running smoothly on a day to day basis.

April – Darla Ellison and Kathy Frazier

If you work at Peterstown Middle and you say WVU, the April

teacher of the month comes to mind. We are pretty sure she bleeds

blue and gold. Mrs. Darla Ellison is an avid sports fan and a pure joy

to know and work with. Her laugh is infectious and her experience is

often a guiding light for the newer teachers on staff. Mrs. Ellison,

thank you for all that you do for the staff and students at PMS. Even

though a few of us bleed green, you love us anyway.

Here is a little trivia for you…since March of 2020, which service

employee has used 30+ gallons of paint sprucing up the Peterstown

Schools? If you guessed Mrs. Kathy Frazier, you were correct!

Kathy is a cleaning and painting machine. No matter what she does,

her desire is to glorify her Lord and make a better place for students

and staff to spend their academic hours. Kathy always has a kind

word and a smile for those she is around and is truly a blessing to

PMS. Kathy, we love and appreciate you!
