BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, EXPANDING THE HEAVY LIFT CORRIDOR•The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (BC MoTI) has identified

the movement of oversize-overweight (OS-OW) vehicles, including project cargo, as a high priority under the recently released Provincial Transportation Plan - BC On the Move.

•BC MoTI has committed to work with industry to develop a number of provincial highway corridors pre-approved, with pre-determined permit conditions, for 125-metric tonne OS-OW vehicles from BC’s west coast marine terminals to the BC-Alberta border and north-east BC. Pre-approved corridors for OS-OW vehicles provide greater certainty of approval and enable trucking companies to get the permits they need more easily and quickly.

•Work is underway to evaluate the proposed corridors for vehicle combinations that would qualify for pre-approval with a 48-hour permit turnaround time at vehicle weights and dimen-sions above those identified in the table on the opposite page.

•In addition, permit conditions governing travel times, pilot car requirements, and transportation management plans are also being reviewed.

•Permits for larger and heavier vehicle combinations that exceed pre-approved weights and dimension limits will continue to be available under BC MoTI’s current Extraordinary Load Approval Process.

•Furthermore, introduction of a new automated online permitting system will provide trucking companies with the ability to obtain permits 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no wait times.

•A permit must be issued by the Ministry’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) Branch prior to transportation.
