Tips & Tricks

For private scholarships, funds are found by searching, mostly online, through preset

search engines. There are a number of different ways to approach the search. Many

students search based on their academic pursuits and artistic talents, which is a great

start. There are many different criteria upon which to base a search, so don't limit

yourself. A good brainstorming session can help you identify some of these avenues

upon which to search. Also, look at any membership groups that you/your family might

belong to (example: credit union, Mason's guild, union organizations), religion,

nationality, disability, personal characteristics (example: are you tall or left handed?),

places you shop, the city/state you live in, parent employers, etc.

In addition, keep a calendar handy (whether it's paper or digital) and make sure to note

any deadlines you may have missed for this year along with the scholarships you are

applying for. You will have additional opportunities to apply in your future years at

school, and a calendar specific to scholarship deadlines will help you stay organized.

You may even want to keep a separate email address just for scholarship searching to

help keep this information separate as you sign up for different things along the way.

You will find some general search sites such

as www.fastweb.com, www.schoolsoup.com, www.scholarships.com, www.studentschol

arshipsearch.com, and www.goodcall.com. These are legitimate sites and you will want

to use them, but they are heavily used by students all over the country - and they do

require you to create accounts. Outside of these general search sites, you'll want to do

some specific searches based on the criteria you found in your brainstorming session.

If you only have a limited amount of time to put toward applications, make sure you are

applying for scholarships that have the smallest competition group. For example, if you

only have time to complete one application and you are trying to choose between a

national scholarship and an Oregon specific scholarship, go with the Oregon

scholarship. You are likely to be competing against a smaller number of students and

therefore automatically increase your chances.

You must be a U.S. citizen and between the ages of 18 and 35 to be eligible for this award. ONLY THOSE SHOULD APPLY WHO ARE SKILLED AND DEVOTED TO THIS CLASSICAL OR CONSERVATIVE TRADITION.

National Sculpture Society http://nationalsculpture.org/programs-awards/participation-scholarships/ For sculptors, between the ages of 21-35, who would like to attend National Sculpture Society’s Sculpture Celebration Conference which takes place in New York City.

New Threats to Freedom Essay Contest http://newthreatstofreedom.com/contests/ The New Threats to Freedom Essay Contest ($5,000) is open to students pursuing a degree at an accredited college or university in the United States. To be considered for the short form contest, you must submit a three to five minute video, or a 300 - 500 word response to one of three videos provided, which discuss topics in the book, New Threats to Freedom. For the long form contest, you must submit a 2000 - 3000 word counter argument to one of three essays that appear in New Threats to Freedom.

Point Foundation https://www.pointfoundation.org/thepoint/scholarship/ Point Foundation (Point) is the nation’s largest higher education scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students. Point’s multifaceted support of its scholarship recipients (“scholars”) extends far beyond direct financial contribution toward the cost of their education. Each scholar is paired with a mentor and participates in leadership development programs and events. Pride Foundation Scholarship https://www.pridefoundation.org/what-we-do/scholarships/guidelines/ Pride Foundation’s scholarship program is guided with an emphasis on providing essential financial resources and community support to LGBTQ students across the Northwest—particularly those who are vulnerable and continue to be marginalized.

Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation https://pgsf.org/ Scholarship awards vary in amount from $1,000 to $5,000 per academic year, in most cases, for up to four years. In addition, all current recipients are given an honorary membership in the Printing Industries of America for the duration of their studies.

Shawn Carter Foundation https://www.shawncartersf.com/scholarship-fund/ The SCSF provides individual grants, paid directly to the educational institution, to every student who qualifies and reapplies yearly, from admission to graduation. The grant can be used to cover tuition expenses and related supplemental educational expenses such as books, lab fees, travel and select costs of living.

Ski Butlers Scholarship Fund https://www.skibutlers.com/scholarship Ski Butlers has created a $2,000 annual scholarship to award students who have a passion for skiing and/or riding and have used their passion to excel in the classroom. Ski Butlers believes that those who follow their passions are the happiest, strongest and most successful leaders in the world.

Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators http://www.scbwi.org/awards/grants/student-illustrator-scholarship/ Each year, the SCBWI sponsors four conference scholarships for full-time graduate or undergraduate students studying illustration. The Ford Family Foundation Ford Scholars Program http://www.tfff.org/what-we-do/successful-citizens/postsecondary-success/scholarship-programs/ford-scholars-program The Ford Scholars Program is need-based and open to 1) graduating high school seniors and, 2) community college students ready to transfer to a four-year college, who are seeking a bachelor’s degree in Oregon or California. This program is available to residents of Oregon and Siskiyou County, Calif. The Ford Family Foundation Restart Program http://www.tfff.org/what-we-do/successful-citizens/scholarship-programs/ford-restart-program The Ford ReStart Program is need-based and was created to encourage adults, age 25 or older, to begin or return to full-time post-secondary education to earn a degree at an eligible college. This program is available to residents of Oregon and Siskiyou County, California.
