World Teachers DayTomorrow is World Teachers day. On this day we recognise the contributions that our wonderful teachers make in the lives of our young people.

As a staff, we acknowledge our dedicated and passionate teachers who work hard day in and day out to make a difference. I think you will join me in sending an extra special thank you for the way that our teachers have supported students and families with care in what has been a very uncertain year.

To our amazing Educators: thank you for inspiring and educating our children throughout their learning journey. We are very fortunate to have you at Balaklava Primary School.

The SSO staff have provided some special treats throughout the week to acknowledge and say thank you to our teachers which certainly has been appreciated.

Book WeekThank you to the students and families for your participation in Book Week. It was fantastic to see so many students in costume. I love the creativity and discussions when I walk around the school with students challenging me to guess which book they were from. This always sparks a great conversation about a particular story and often inspires me head to the library and borrow books that I had previously not heard of.

A huge thank you to our family, friends and Balaklava community who lined the street to wave to us and then joined us at the triangle for our story “The Day the Crayon’s Quit”.

Thank you to Diane Fitzgerald (Fitzy) for making many of the crayon costumes.

Canteen PricelistDue to circumstances beyond the control of the Canteen, some prices have increased since the list that was published last week.

End of Tenure Review:As my tenure ends at the end of next year, Neil White, Education Director Gawler Portfolio is conducting (and collating) surveys from parents and staff to provide feedback about my performance. This is different from the survey you did last term which was about the school. The information is confidential, collated electronically and viewed only by Neil and myself. Please consider the rating carefully and provide explanation of any good work or any concern you may have.

Placements:The class placement process will begin as soon as we have the structures in place. This process is completed over a number of weeks and staff work hard to ensure we place students carefully in regards to class size and structure. We also try to ensure we put together groups of students who will work and learn well together.

To do this we consider:• The learning needs of each child• A good balance of boys and girls• Learning abilities• Each child’s friendship needs

Teachers will give strong consideration to each child’s friendship needs. If friends do not work well together, teachers may decide not to put them into the same class. School is a time to learn to develop new friendships. A new class and a new school year is an ideal time to make new friends. A few children have very special learning or health needs. If you believe that your child has such needs, we will strive to do our very best to take this into consideration when we finalise classes, but due to a range of complexities, this may not always be possible.

While we welcome letters regarding other parental considerations, we must stress that requests will be considered but are not always possible. We do ask that you do not request specific teachers as staffing for 2021 has not been confirmed.

It is extremely important that we know your intentions for 2021 in order to have class numbers as accurate as possible. If you know of anyone moving into the area, please encourage them to book a time to meet with myself. We appreciate your support in helping to make this process as streamlined as possible.

Year 7This term is an especially exciting one for the Year 7 students. As they look back on their time in Primary School, prepare for graduation and possible changes ahead in friendships and routines, they will need our support and understanding.

We are looking for their best effort and a memorable last term with us.

The Materials & Services Charge for 2021 has been proposed as $265.00 per student. This represents no increase from 2020.

Parents and Caregivers are invited to the Governing Council meeting on Dec 1st commencing at 6pm where the charge will be discussed prior to final approval. In lieu of attendance views can be expressed in writing to the Chairperson of the Governing

Council prior to the meeting.

Book Week JigsaW Puzzle

As part of Book Week celebration students and staff have been working on our book title jigsaw puzzle. The puzzle was completed yesterday with Hugo kindly saving the last piece for Mrs Cleary to put in.

The Graduation Ceremony will be held on Friday 6th November. Students Graduating will be provided with a light lunch on Friday (due to COVID this is strictly a student only event)

A representative from the University will be at Balaklava to present the graduating students with their tassle, certificate and small graduation gift. The graduation event will be held as part of our assembly which means that it will be available to view via Webex.

Once we determine how many students will be graduating, we will be able to send out an invitation to the families of the students to be able to attend the ceremony in person. These numbers will determine how many people per child will be invited to the event. This will strictly be an invitation only event.

Ukulele’sStudents have been learning about the Ukulele and how works and how it is made.

How to Make a UkuleleWhat you need:• A 2L clean bottle with no lid• A long piece of string (1m)• 2 short pegs or pencils• Scissors

How to make it:1. You get the 2L clean bottle and use scissors to cut a rectangle shape in the middle.

Poke a small hole in the bottom of the bottle2. Get the long piece of string and fold in half. Keep the loop at the top and thread the

two ends through the hole at the bottom. Get 1 peg or pencil and tie the two ends onto the peg or pencil tightly.

3. Get the other peg or pencil and thread it through the loop at the other end (you will need an extra pair of hand to help you)

4. One person holds the loop end and the knot end. The other person twists and twists until it stays there and is very tight.

Finalising WorkThere has been a bundle of work recently marked on Seesaw including videos, audio recordings, artwork, group work etc. Some of the creativity and effort that has been put into a lot of these works are simply amazing and I highly recommend that you take a look.

Did you know that you can download your child’s work from seesaw, or share it with family digitally? Click on your child’s work, select the three dots and choose whether you want to share it or download it.

This is such a wonderful way to show family members what your child has been doing at school, or even holding onto it as a keepsake for when they are older. Who knows? With the way technology is evolving, we’re likely to end up with digital scrapbooks or photo albums that your child may be sharing with their children one day.

“You Are Your Baby’s Rockstar”You might recall that last fortnight I begin a small section on the importance of music. I’m currently undertaking some extensive musical professional development, and a part of this has inspired some reading on scientific research that has been undertaken on the importance of music on a child’s brain. In Anita Collin’s book The Music Advantage, she asks us why people think they need to be a perfect singer for their child. Sure, it certainly helps to be able to carry a tune, but at such a young age, children are trying to understand the inflections that we make in conversation - When is the sound a warning? When is the sound a celebration? So it doesn’t matter if you aren’t singing perfectly – you are helping your child’s brain interpret language, inflection and meaning – and your one-person performance is doing wonders for their brain. Research has identified that singing gives children the time to really clearly hear the pattern of a song, how notes are broken down and how our voices work. Singing something simple and slow allows children to identify that the voice they are listening to is yours - and as their other senses are only starting to be developed, sound is the best way to do it. One of the main problems when it comes to children’s auditory processing system is that things like television, background chatter in a cafe, the radio or a band down by the beach or local pub can provide too many different sounds. Many children in this day and age are coming to school with speech impediments which may have been a result of lack of conversation and reading to a child, as well as too much surrounding noise that has prevented the child from

hearing words correctly. I know of several songs

Book Fair

Following on from our very enjoyable Book Week dress up & parade last week, the students have now enjoyed shopping at the Book Fair this week. Thank you to everyone who has supported this as our library does benefit from sales. Thanks also for everyone’s patience as we comply with COVID regulations. We are still open for purchases today and tomorrow.

One of the most popular spots in our yard is the Loose Parts play area. We have a roster system so the younger classes have equal time. This Wednesday a group of girls were making the most of their time in our loose parts area. We are always looking for donations of pallets, cable rolls, crates, plastic tubing or material that can be used to build structures, so if you can help us out please let us know.

Thursday this week was the start of our tennis coaching program that has been made possible by a grant from Sporting Schools Australia. Six of our classes will be benefiting from this program which will run for 4 Thursdays this term. The grant included nets, racquets and other equipment as well as a coach provided by Tennis Australia. Here we have pictures of coach, Sam Clayson working with Mrs Richard’s Yr 1 / 2 class.

In Room 14B this term we have been creating artwork that links with the topic we are covering in maths. We created array cities using different multiplication sums and put the windows in an array to show the sum. We began looking at fractions. In art we each got one quarter and had to do some collaborative art in our group, focusing on a theme. We then put our 1/4s together to make a whole.
