Big History students present

Recently Year 7 and 8 students from the Big History Extension Program had the opportunity to show their parents and teachers what they have been working on throughout the year. The evening presentations held in the school library, included a screening of the Big History Lustre Project virtual reality film. This major project is set to be included in the brand new WA museum when it opens in 2020.

A light supper was provided after the presentations that was prepared and served by the students of the school Special Education Needs department.

One parent commented; “What an impressive evening of fantastic presentations and confident, articulate speakers. I certainly learned a few things I did not know before. Congratulations to all.”.

My first year at Broome Senior High School has flown by. It has been filled with wonderful experiences I will keep as memories forever. I feel privileged every day to work in such a dynamic environment filled with focussed, hardworking students, dedicated staff and vibrant community members.

Working together with the four Primary Schools in the Broome Cluster of Independent Public Schools is an ongoing and integral part of the successes our students achieve in their academic lives. As a collective we provide the Broome community with a world-class education from Kindy to Year 12. This is a reflection of the enormous dedication and commitment staff, parents and the wider community have put in and my thanks go out to all of you for your continued support.

I would like to acknowledge our awesome students who consistently demonstrate what is possible if you are determined and work hard to achieve your goals. At Broome Senior High School we have a foundation built on a culture of success and our students certainly live up to that and the school motto to ‘be the best that you can be’. Congratulations also to our 87 Year 12 students for 2018. We wish you great adventures after Broome Senior High School.

Finally, to staff, students and families, thank you once more for your contributions to the school this year, it has certainly been a great one. Have a most enjoyable break, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all in 2019.

PRINCIPAL’S SAY

National HaSS High Distinction honour awarded

The Year 10 HaSS class recently entered the Australian Geography Competition and the Australian History Competition. Both National competition submissions were assessed against other entries from around Australia.

Participation in these competitions is an excellent opportunity for students to practise valuable exam skills, as well as providing an understanding of how they are performing in comparison to other students around Australia.

In 2018 we celebrated the attainment of a High Distinction in the Australian History Competition by student Oliver Hulse. Oliver achieved more than 86%, placing him among the top ranking Year 10 students in the country. Congratulations Oliver.

By Naomie Hatherley I Broome Senior High School Visual Arts teacher and P&C committee member. The Broome Senior High School P&C Quiz Night fundraiser held this term was a resounding success and thanks to everyone who attended. We managed to raise approximately $11,000 for our school.

The success of the quiz night depends upon the tireless work of a band of dedicated volunteer parents to put the show together, coupled with the energy and involvement of our wonderful Broome Senior High School staff in supporting, hosting and promoting the event. Our new Principal for 2018, Mr Burt, has now been officially inducted into quiz proceedings too. He did an outstanding job stepping in as quizmaster at the last minute.

As both a Broome Senior High School teacher and P&C member I would like to say a big THANK YOU for everyone’s support. Those of you who booked tables and dragged along your mates to spend up big, those of you who helped to hustle donations for the prize pool and those of you who generously pitched in to help set up or pack up for the night we couldn’t have done it without you.

Talent on show at annual visual arts and technologies exhibition An impressive display of students’ creativity and hard work, was on show at the annual Visual Arts and Technologies Exhibition held recently in the School Arts block. Over 120 people visited during the two hour event, which featured two and three-dimensional work from students in Years 7 to 12. There was a successful silent auction of paintings created by students from the Broome Girls Academy and also on display was the recent work by 2017 graduate Shala-Tia Arnott. Hospitality students provided catering for the event whilst background music from Year 11 student Montana Arnold added to the ambience.

“The event is a valuable opportunity for students to publicly share what goes on in our workshops and studios” explains Visual Art teacher, James MacNeil. “It’s great to see the pride the kids have when showing their work to their families and friends.”

The girls' artwork, along with that of Year 12 Certificate II and Certificate III Visual Art students, features in the roof and lower wall of the structure.

The lookout project, was coordinated by The Shire of Broome and incorporates students' artwork created in class along the themes of Jarlangardi (Goanna) Dreaming and Walga Walga (Salmon) Dreaming with mentoring from Yawuru artists Martha Lee and Ricky Roe.
