State Convention ~ Cow Camp 2013 ~ Awards & Scholarships

For more information, contact Kirsten Areias at 209-617-0430 or Kate Briggs at 805-801-0463

This year, Cow Camp returned to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. July is the perfect time for a few days on the coast, and our CJHA group had a fabulous time. Living in the Ag dorms for 3 days for the full Cal Poly experience, Cow Camp is an educational and fun experience for dairy youth of all ages. An exciting addition to the program this year was a mini Dairy Challenge contest, modeled after the collegiate competition. In small groups, campers toured the dairy with industry professionals, focusing on key areas of nutrition, cow comfort, calf care, and records. The groups were then assigned to present their reccomendations for areas of opportunity to dairy management. A huge thank you to Dr. Henderson and Rich Silacci for their hospitality and efforts in organizing events; also to Michael Oliveria, Kelsey Cheda, Adam Goltz, and Dr. Berning for their time in assisting with the Dairy Challenge day. AperennialhighlightistheAllen’samazingbeachBBQandbonfireatAvilaBeach.Campersandchaperonesalikeenjoyed the sun, sand, and an evening with Holstein friends. During Camp, members also took part in a dairy cattle judging workshop, Dairy Jeopardy contest, Fitting demonstration, trip to the bowling alley, and friendly competition in games. I personally had the good fortune of being introduced to “Dairy-opoly” by some very business-minded (and competitive) young members from the south valley :)
