SHOT SHOW REPORT FROM JOHN PARKER I attended the 2016 Shot Show in Las Vegas on behalf of the Skyline Club in January. This year,

the show had grown tremendously over previous years with buyers and sellers from the United

States and more than 100 countries. Total attendance for the 2015 SHOT Show was nearly

64,000 people and more than 1,600 companies to include about 150 new companies exhibiting

their products. There were various manufacturers of firearms, ammunition, optics, cutlery,

apparel, accessories and law enforcement equipment introducing new products and services that

will be offered to retail consumers during the course of this next year. Total show exhibition

space was more than 640,000 net square feet, or the equivalent of 13 acres and yes, my feet were

pretty shot by the end of the day. I also attended two classes that discussed the ins and outs of

NFA ownership and the process in which to obtain them which I found to be quite informative.

Page 5: P.O. Box 621489 Littleton, CO 80162-1489 February 2016 · Shop, Thunderbeast Silencers, Suppressed Armament Systems, Surefire suppressors, YHM Silencers, Blue Ridge Knives, and many

5

There were dozens of new pistol, revolver, AR, tactical and target rifles, and shotguns from

virtually every gun manufacturer big and small. I couldn’t help but notice that many of the new

pistols are catered more to the

conceal carry owners. It seems to

be getting difficult for the AR

companies to come up with new

and unique configurations,

modifications, and accessories that

can be applied to these platforms.

However, those that were truly

innovative displayed some pretty

cool stuff such as a belt fed semi

auto AR. Hmmm, I wonder if that

would be classified as magazine

for those of us here in Colorado.

Now that silencer ownership has become so popular, many companies are now making pistols

that come standard with threaded barrels and are available in endless combinations.

For the Gals in the club, this year I noticed a big focus on women with their participation in

target shooting and hunting as well as interest in owning a firearm for personal and home

protection. There were more pink and purple guns (pistols, rifles, and AR’s) than I could count

and I will admit that some of them did actually look nice. There were vendors like Girls with

Guns, The Well Armed Woman, Gun Tot’n Mamas that make purses and other types of “Girl

Equipment” that lets the gals go to the range while not having to look like the guys.

Lastly, one of the tasks that I enjoy the most while I am there, is to secure additional

opportunities for you to spend your hard earned money on the toys that you deserve and work all

of that overtime for. This year I was able to get several new accounts set up as well as reacquaint

ourselves with many of our older distributors and dealers. In some cases, I have been working on

getting these accounts set up for the last three years. A short list of the new accounts are:

Shop, Thunderbeast Silencers, Suppressed Armament Systems, Surefire suppressors, YHM

Silencers, Blue Ridge Knives, and many more which I will begin listing in our newsletter in the

coming months.

I hope you found this information useful and entertaining. If you have any specific questions

relating to any of the vendors that I have listed or want to inquire about something specific that

you are looking, feel free to drop me a line or give me a call.

Thanks,

John Parker

FISHING REPORT

January 27th

fishing report- 8 people showed up for the

evening last night. While only 1 fish was landed we did

miss a couple of other bites and the understanding of the

fish in Chatfield has been solidified.

The one landed Bluegill came from directly on top of the

underwater bridge in the middle of the lake. About half

of the team was fishing here and the other half was

fishing the roadbed drop-offs west of the bridge. The

people on the bridge were fishing smaller lures (like the

Clam blade spoon in the photo) while the guys on the

rest of the roadbed were fishing larger walleye lures (like

the W7 Rapala Jigging Rap or a ½ ounce Bass Pro XPS

Blade bait).

Everyone fishing saw 5+ fish and some people reported

seeing fish constantly for 30 to 45 minutes during the

peak sunset time. The only bites were on smaller lures

over the bridge. A majority of the marks seen were interpreted as “smaller fish” with occasional

larger fish coming through (probably trout).

Here is what is happening----when smaller fish inhabit the roadbed the larger walleye are off

chasing bait in open water. This is how we know in July that the shad spawn is complete and the

bait has grown big enough to chase in open water (instead of hunting on structure). Walleyes are

opportunistic feeders and if there is enough bait to make open water hunting possible they will

not use structure for ambush they just plow into the bait ball and eat (then go and rest on the

bottom for 10 hours). Without the larger walleyes on the structure the smaller walleyes (like we

caught last week) and the smaller panfish (like the bluegill and perch) use the structure to

ambush smaller bait and/or look for worms and bugs.

Page 10: P.O. Box 621489 Littleton, CO 80162-1489 February 2016 · Shop, Thunderbeast Silencers, Suppressed Armament Systems, Surefire suppressors, YHM Silencers, Blue Ridge Knives, and many

10

So we have a few options for February---focus on the smaller panfish/walleyes in known areas

(like the bridge)---go looking for large concentrations of bait and fish below them for larger

walleyes (probably further south in the pits and spread throughout the main basins)---go looking

for panfish/perch in mud bottomed areas that might be feeding on chironomids and bloodworms

(typically deeper areas like the football pit, the tower, and even in Kingfisher cove).

If people want to explore these options this weekend let me know and I will describe a plan.

Otherwise we will split our time in February between some of these options. With 10” of ice at

Chatty and only minimal melting on a hot day (50F) like yesterday (there was no slush on the ice

at 3:30 when we arrived) we are good for at least a couple more weeks of Wednesday fishing if

not 4 weeks with a couple of cold snaps!

2016 NRA CLASSES We have tentatively scheduled a Basic Pistol class in April (April 14

th; 16

th) and a Personal

Protection in the Home class in May (May 19th

; 21st and 23

rd). Class slots are first come first

served. Class date will be confirmed when we get the minimum required students to hold the

class. If the class is sold out, we’ll start a wait list and when wait list exceeds the minimum we’ll

schedule another class. So please signup or get on the wait list to assure we have at least the

minimum students to hold the classes. Please contact Gene Adamson,303-667-2871 to signup.

We are trying a two day format for BP class to see if students like that better. The 14th

is

classroom session in the evening 6 pm to 10 pm. The 16th

is a range session in the morning from

8am to 1 pm and then a classroom session in the afternoon finishing at around 5 pm.

PPITH is the typical schedule with classroom on the 19th

23rd

from 6 to 10 pm and range session

on the 21st from 8 am to 1 pm.

SHFC offers NRA Classes in Basic Pistol (BP) and Personal Protection in the Home (PPITH).

These BP Classes include familiarization with a handgun, how it works, safe storage, etcetera

and shooting at the SHFC Range. BP is a pre-requisite for PPITH; Please visit the SHFC NRA

Class site for more information.

If you have questions concerning these classes, please contact Gene Adamson, Jim Cathcart or

the listed lead instructor.

NEW REQUIREMENT FOR 2016 TO BE RSO See below for updates to the SHFC RSO program. These changes and new RSO requirements

were made by the board to improve RSO sign up on the RSO calendar to allow better access to

general membership.

Range Safety Officer (RSO) Changes to Support SHFC

Page 11: P.O. Box 621489 Littleton, CO 80162-1489 February 2016 · Shop, Thunderbeast Silencers, Suppressed Armament Systems, Surefire suppressors, YHM Silencers, Blue Ridge Knives, and many

11

Problem Description: Members have been told that access to the firearm ranges requires an RSO

to have signed up on the calendar. Members are complaining access is very difficult when there’s

no one signed up.

Current Environment: The club has a company requirement that firearm ranges must have a

Range Safety Officer (RSO) overseeing safety and access requirements to consider the range as

Open. The club has over 200 members that have been trained to perform the duties as Range

Safety Officers (RSOs). The critical shortage of RSOs signing up for coverage of the Range

prompted the Board to ask for recommendations for changes. Meetings were held to solicit ideas

and propose actions with many experienced RSOs present or through other suggestion paths. We

received a wide array of everything imaginable.

Corrective Actions: The following are the actions that received the Board’s approval to form the

basis for our 2016 program; these will be discussed in detail at the Annual Safety Briefings that

will begin in March.

1. There has not been a mandatory service requirement to allow people to maintain their

RSO capability. The new requirement beginning 2016 membership year is: to maintain or obtain

an RSO capability, individuals will be required to sign-up for 6 hours minimum on the RSO

calendar and perform the RSO duty . These hours can be done in segments to total 6 hours

minimum. Many members wanted to get their RSO capability so they are able to open the range

on their own. Most did not enter their coverage in the calendar for many reasons and therefore

the general membership was not able to count on or see the coverage. Hours done as Ad Hoc

RSO or for other club activities do NOT count toward this RSO requirement. RSO performed

hours must be recorded on the RSO calendar and on the RSO hours log, which is maintained by

Norm Viste, to verify RSO eligibility for next year’s renewal.

2. To maintain or receive your RSO badge for 2016 membership year, RSO must sign up

for 6 hours minimum on the RSO calendar in the fiscal 2016 period (March 1, 2016 to February

28, 2017). You will not receive your RSO badge at membership renewal until you have signed

up for the minimum 6 hours total on the RSO calendar for the 2016 period. Signing up on the

RSO calendar is a commitment to perform the RSO duties. If a time conflict later arises for the

sign ups, the RSO has the flexibility to make adjustments such as swapping shifts with other

RSO, but must update the RSO calendar and perform the required minimum hours.

3. Any members wanting to become RSOs will be offered classes to develop personnel with

this requirement and commitment to the club clearly in mind. Members are urged to contact

Gene Adamson at [email protected] for adding their name to the list and scheduling

Information.

4. NRA RSO certification is not required to be an RSO, just the RSO training offered in 3

above which will be maintained by Gene Adamson. Therefore SHFC will no longer reimburse

the NRA RSO certification fee.

RANGE SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH When communicating on the radio to arrange coordinated cease fire, please be specific and

verify you have received confirmation of cease fire from the required range. Do not assume

which range is responding. When you hear, “yea, we are cold”, do not assume that is from the

range you are seeking a cease fire. The proper response required for example is “this is the pistol

range, we are cold”. Better yet, give and get a visual confirmation from the person you are

talking to if you can.

MEMBERS INPUT If you have club related pictures, stories, member news, comments, suggestions or questions,

please send them to me [email protected] or other board member and I’ll put it on here.

If it’s a question or suggestion, we’ll put the answer or board response on here also.

Dennis Brown took this cow Elk at Mountain Meadows Ranching for Wildlife, 12/1/2015, in the

Snyder Gulch area on the south side of the ranch. The animal was taken from a herd of 35 at

+400 yards with a .300 WIN Mag 165gr Hornady Interlock BTSP. Bullet entered left chest in

front of leg, exited right chest in front of right leg. Animal ran 125 yards and dropped.
