Year 7 Camp – Laurel Hill Year 7 students are invited to attend the Year 7 Team-Building Camp to Laurel Hill from 4th-6th March. Information was sent home during our Transition Program last year and another note will be sent home this week including information about the camp and anticipated costs. A payment plan will be distributed this week. Final costs will be confirmed once numbers are known. We encourage students to attend as this is a wonderful opportunity to get to know class mates, build positive relationships and to step out of one’s comfort zone. Please contact Mr Sam Brown, Year 7 Advisor, with any questions you may have about this awesome experience. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) After a successful PBL launch in 2019, Leeton High School will continue to embed our values across all settings of the school. This year we move into the classroom with the teaching of our values – being respectful, responsible, learners. To assist students to understand what PBL means we will continue to refer to our values during assemblies and our Year/Wellbeing Meetings in conjunction with students participating in two 20 minute PBL lessons per week on a Tuesday and Thursday. Our 2019 Monday PBL lesson will be replaced by a Year Meeting for all years in 2020. PBL lessons are led and shared by two teachers each fortnight. During these meeting students from Years 7-12 will explore what our values mean and what it looks like to be a respectful, responsible learner in different setting around the school. Year 7 will have their own PBL classes to introduce them to what PBL is. We will continue to support our students to understand and adopt our PBL values and to demonstrate desired positive behaviours to build the most positive experiences at school for both students and staff. Our PBL lessons assist in creating a more respectful learning and wellbeing environment responsive to all student needs at Leeton High School. As a result of our move to become a PBL school our Wellbeing and Discipline Policy and Merit System has been updated to also reflect a greater focus on promoting and acknowledging positive behaviours. PBL is a long-term investment to create, over time, the best teaching, learning and wellbeing environment possible and I look forward to watching PBL re-shape negative behaviours to positive ones at Leeton High School. I sincerely thank the PBL Team for their commitment and dedication. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) – Statement of purpose

Our school community promotes a culture of positive and respectful relationships and our students are responsible learners who strive to meet the challenge the future. The PBL framework is essential in supporting this desirable school culture. The diagram shows how the PBL continuum applies to all students. PBL establishes strong school -wide universal systems (Tier 1) to promote early intervention and the teaching and acknowledging of social-emotional skills based on our school values of being respectful, responsible learners. Tier 2 targeted support is a team driven process. It strengthens and builds upon what has been taught to students at the universal level during PBL lessons and through the course of each day. Some students, approximately 10-15 per cent, will respond to Tier 1 supports but will continue to exhibit some difficulties. These students may be need additional academic and/or social-emotional support. A smaller group of students, approximately 1-5 per cent, may need individualised and intensive Tier 3 supports as well as universal and targeted support. Our school will build upon the foundations of the school-wide system to support these students, again through our constant focus on the practices and behaviours we expect as respectful, responsible learners. Intervention supports focus on creating and implementing individualised behaviour support plans that are linked to the universal system of our values. PBL helps schools to develop consistent systems to discourage unproductive behaviour by establishing clear and common behaviour expectations for all students. Our PBL values are linked to our awards and merit system.

WELFARE NEWS I would like to introduce myself … I am Tracey Byrne and I have moved from Narara Valley High School on the Central Coast of NSW with my son to Leeton to take on the role as Head Teacher Welfare. I have been working for the department of Education for 20+ years and the majority of this time has been in the welfare roles as Year Advisor or relieving HT Welfare. I feel very lucky to be involved in the Welfare Team at Leeton High School. We have many staff who are available to assist the students to ensure that all students are able to reach their potential. Being able to communicate with the students about issues that are important to them is an honour, and one we take seriously. We endeavour to ensure that the communication channels are open with the families and our Welfare Team, so we can achieve the common goal of helping the students to be happy and productive members of society. 2020 has begun with a bang. Students have returned to school with enthusiasm to move onto the next phase of their schooling. All students are encouraged to return to the school year with a fresh and positive attitude, remember the responsibilities that they have to themselves, their peers and their teachers as RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS. I would like to congratulate Year 7 whose transition to high school has been very smooth. As a cohort they have demonstrated a great deal of maturity. I look forward to getting to meet all students, parents and community members as the year progresses.

Kind Regards Tracey Byrne
