TRANSISTION VISITS A very exciting time was had by both new students and families on Tuesday for our first

formal Transition Visit for our 2019 enrolments. Students enjoyed

WARM WEATHER & SNAKES: DISCUSS WITH YOUR CHILD We encourage all families to have conversations regarding snakes at home over coming

days. We have had one snake sighting this term in our school and we acted accordingly to

the situation. With the warmer weather imminent it is timely to have a discussion with

your child(ren) about being safe around snakes, to stay well away if one is sighted, not to

GRADE STRUCTURE IN 2019 The grade structure for 2019 is yet to be completed as enrolments are still in the process

of being finalised. At this time of year there are also a number of enquiries into available

places from families moving into the area. Importantly if your child will not be attending

California Gully PS in 2019, we would appreciate you letting us know.

We understand friendship groups are important, however it is equally important to

recognise the need to establish productive environments that support learning, as well as

maintaining or building new friendship groups. If there are any concerns about friendship

placements for students in 2019, please let me know in writing by Friday 26th October

(tomorrow). Whilst we will take all concerns into consideration, we do not guarantee that

these can be implemented as we must ensure that there is an equal balance of social,

emotional and academic needs within each classroom.

Please note that it is not possible for parents to request specific teachers. Classroom

groups will be developed for social and educational needs, and then teachers will be

matched with a classroom.

FOOD SHARE As a school community we are extremely fortunate to have such a positive relationship

with ‘Food Share’, supporting families with a wide variety of fresh fruit, vegetables and

grocery items. This is a friendly reminder that it is important to make respectful choices

when collecting items to take home. A large majority of families utilise this resource and

we must ensure it can be shared with all of our community.

CUNJUNCTIVITIS There have been several reported cases of conjunctivitis in the school; the recommended

advice from the Department of Health and Humans Services for schools, kindergartens

and childcare centres is that children are to be excluded until the discharge from eyes has

ceased. We appreciate your assistance and understanding with this matter.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY - WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 31st Please don’t forget that next Wednesday, October 31st, is a public holiday for Bendigo Cup.

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 28 PLAYING SPORT PROMOTES HEALTH Playing sport is a terrific way to stay fit. Whether it’s tennis or a team sport like soccer, the regular training that’s necessary provides lots of opportunity to be active. Team sports also help kids develop social skills, like co-operation and tolerance. Expose your kids to lots of different sports and physical activities. They may find they have a natural talent for one or more of them. Some kids don’t enjoy playing traditional sports. They can feel the odd one out when they don’t join in the usual sports that other kids are involved in. For these kids, there are lots of alternatives. They might try rock-climbing, dancing, gymnastics or one of the martial arts such as karate or judo. Whatever the child’s interests and abilities, there will be some sport or activity that will appeal.

What you can do NOW Practise basic sporting skills such as throwing a ball, sipping

and hopping with your kids. If your kids play sport such as soccer, hockey, football or

netball, have then fitted with mouth guards.

Good Idea!

Consider becoming a coach for your child’s team sport. That way you get to spend time with them, get to know their teammates, and get fit too.

Top Tip

Avoid giving kids sweets and doughnuts for energy whey they play sport. Stick to fruits and plenty of water, and more nutri-tious snacks afterwards.

National Nutrition Week is held every year by Nutrition Australia in October and is a fantastic opportunity to get parents, teachers and kids to join in the fun and

opportunities to understand more about healthy living through food variety and

physical activity!

Nutrition Australia, as well as many schools, community health centres and workplaces, will be

hosting a number of events during Nutrition Week. For further information and to find out more about events in your area visit the Nutrition Australia website www.nutritionaustralia.org .

Also available on the Nutrition Australia website is the Nutrition Week Kit designed for schools, families, workplace, childcare and other

community groups to assist in planning their own events and activites. Activities available in some states include:

Guest speakers

Celebrity chefs & cooking demonstrations

Trade stalls from sporting organisations

Children’s activities including face painting and competitions

Showbags

This week in after school care we have again participated in a variety of activities. On Thursday we cooked pancakes, these were bland as we didn’t use any eggs, but as toppings we had cinnamon sugar, butter and golden syrup, so this gave us the extra flavour we wanted. We used balloons as balls, on one of the days we were inside because of the weather, some of these we also filled with sand and made stress balls. Several of our children have been learning the basics of chess. Everyone has co-operated with each other, which has been terrific to observe.

Next Wednesday, October 31st is a Public Holiday for Bendigo Cup, so there is no After School Care on this day.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!

California Gully Primary School has signed up with the Fitzpatrick’s Home Hardware D.I.Y. Rewards program. Each time you make a purchase at Fitzpat-rick’s Home Hardware please mention the school and for each $1.00 spent the school will earn five club reward points that we can use to purchase products in store when we need to make any repairs around the school.
