Furnas Valley is one of richest hydrologicalareas in Europe with over 22 thermal springs;a truly breathtaking site.

Heading out of Ponta Delgada towards the NorthEast, you will see roads lined with Japanese Cedars, Hydrangeas and Ginger Lilies until youreach Ribeira Grande, a unique city with astrong feeling of Portuguese influence.

City Walk and Botanical Gardens 3½


An opportunity to discover Ponta Delgada onfoot, and enjoy the charming BotanicalGardens.

Setting off from the port, you’ll take a brief driveto the centre where, upon arrival, you’re walkingtour will commence. Ponta Delgada is wellknown for its churches and you’ll head to one ofthe most visited, the Church of St Sebastian. The Gothic style church is believed to have beenconstructed between 1531 and 1547.

Your walk will then continue through the bustlingmain streets of Ponta Delgada before making astop at the Convent and Chapel of Our Lady ofHope. The richly decorated 16th century chapelis home to the statue of ‘Jesus Christ of theMiracles’, a present given to the nuns of theconvent by Pope Clement VII in 1530.

After your walking tour, you’ll rejoin your coachfor a short drive to the Jose Canto BotanicalGarden. Here, you can learn the history of JoseCanto, a renowned gardener and botanist, andenjoy a stroll through the pleasant gardens. Toround off your tour, another short drive will takeyou to the Antonio Borges Botanical Gardens, established by local politician and merchanttrader António Borges Medeiros, an avid 19thcentury amateur botanist. Take a wander throughthe gardens, before the return drive to the port.

The breathtaking landscape of the Azores isthe perfect setting for an unforgettable roundof golf.

Designed by Cameron Powell in 1986, thestunning Batalha golf course consists of 27holes of golf laid out over 120 hectares and issituated on the north coast of São Miguel, just 15minutes from the port. This relatively newcourse, with its magnificent setting, nestled onthe skirts of the surrounding hills and withsweeping views of the ocean, has large flowinggreens, wide and generous fairways and sinuouslycontoured bunkers.

You can enjoy the luxuriant surroundings andthe fabulous scenery at a more leisurely pace byhiring one of the club’s golf buggies. It is difficultto select a best hole as they are all in some waysexceptional, but there is a very special sensationto be felt when standing on the soaring 15thtee.

The Club House, with its perfect blend ofclassical island architecture and modern facilities,covers over 3,000 square metres and offers asuperb range of services. With its elevated views,across the course to the mountains and the blueAtlantic ocean, there can be very few betterplaces, anywhere, to enjoy a drink, snack or mealeither before or after a round of golf.

Essential Information. Green fees and roundtrip transportation are provided. Cost ofbuggy hire is 35 Euros and club hire is 40Euros (full set), which is payable directly to theGolf club. Passengers may use the changingfacilities at the Club House, but anyrefreshments from the bar or restaurant arepayable direct in local currency (Euros).

Take an amazing flight to Montserrat and overthe ‘exclusion zone’, an area off limits toground transportation and habitation since1997.

An experience not to be missed……………

Enjoy the 30 mile flight over the sparklingturquoise Caribbean waters to the neighbouringisland of Montserrat. Here, at the centre of the‘exclusion zone’ is the live and volatile SoufrièreHills Volcano, which can only be seen close up byhelicopter. Rising to an impressive 3,000 feet anddominating the island, it towers above the TarRiver Gorge and Delta at its foot and frequentlyemits a combination of ash, smoke and steam.

In 1997 when the volcano erupted, two-thirds ofthe island were made uninhabitable. View themassive destruction as you fly over a collection ofevacuated villages, the previous location of theWH Bramble Airport and the charred remains ofthe former capital, Plymouth, in some placesburied under 40 feet of ash.

After travelling along the east coast, you’ll leaveMontserrat behind, and fly back to Antigua withbeautiful views of the island and coastline.

Essential information. This tour is nonrefundable once booked. All passengers arerequired to take their passports. You will becontacted on board regarding your flighttimes. There is a strict weight restriction of16½ stone per person and a height restrictionof 6 feet and 4 inches. An ideal option if you’re looking to just spendtime at Nelson’s Dockyard.

Setting off from the port, you’ll enjoy a scenicdrive to the English Harbour, located at thesouthern tip of the island. This beautiful naturalharbour is home to Nelson’s Dockyard, madefamous by the great Admiral Lord Nelson whowas stationed here during the 18th century.Today the dockyard has been refurbished as acolonial village offering a wonderful mixture ofperiod English and Caribbean style architecture.It is also the only remaining Georgian naval shipyard still in operation.

Upon arrival, you’ll be given a brief informativeorientation of the dockyard. Enjoy a soft drink orrum punch refreshment in the Copper andLumber Restaurant, before exploring at your ownleisure. Perhaps visit the museum, browse theinteresting shops and stalls for a souvenir, orsimply relax at the water’s edge of the marina.

Sir Vivian Richards, Curtley Ambrose, to namebut a few………….immerse yourself in theworld of cricket and meet a cricketing hero.

Setting off from the port, you’ll drive to the new Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, the venuefor 6 Super 8 round games in the ICC World Cup2007. Enjoy a guided tour of these impressivegrounds.

Afterwards, you’ll head to the Stanford CricketGround, home to the ‘West Indies Hall of Fame. Here a tribute has been made to the first classcricketers who have scored over 1000 runs andover 100 wickets at first class level.

Your final stop will be the Antigua RecreationGround (ARG), where you’ll take a guided tour ofthe grounds. The grounds are home to 4 existingcricket world records and became the 52nd testvenue in 1980-81. The Historical Society of the Museum of Antiguaand Barbuda is dedicated to the preservation ofthe town’s history. Your route has beenspecifically prepared by the Museum to allow youto take in as many of the town’s historicbuildings, architecture and places of interest thatyou wouldn’t otherwise be aware of.

Follow your guide from the pier to the Museumof Antigua and Barbuda, just a few minutes’walk away. Here, you can enjoy a fruit punch andbrowse the exhibits and displays that highlightthe life of the island. Afterwards, your leisurelystroll will take you through the town where you’llsee historical buildings, private residences, theCathedral and a variety of colourful styles ofarchitecture.

Prior to boarding the yachts, you’ll be dividedinto teams and given a brief introduction beforetendering to the yachts.

Compete in an actual race around a shortened ‘America’s Cup’ course, under the watchful eyesof experienced crew as you participate in the thrill of sailing these fabulous yachts. Everyone isoffered a small task and given instruction by thecrew. No sailing experience is necessary. Thenit’s time to practice on the way to the start. Explorer Cruise and Island 4

Combine a delightful lagoon cruise with anisland tour and stop to visit the charmingtown of Marigot.

Take in the sights of Philipsburg, capital of DutchSt Maarten, and see its quaint ‘gingerbread’houses. Drive along Salt Point Road and over Mountain Road to the south coast.

You’ll stop en route to enjoy the breathtakingviews over Orient Bay and continue passing French Cul de Sac and Grand Casse. A stop willbe made at Marigot for you to browse amongstthe shops, or watch the world go by from apavement café.

You’ll join the Explorer boat at Marina Royale fora short cruise across the calm lagoon, whichstretches across the whole of the island to joinboth Dutch and French sides. On board, relax onthe sun decks whilst listening to the rhythmicsounds of a calypso entertainer. There are 2 barsserving an array of spirits, beer, rum punch and soft drinks.

Setting off from the port, you’ll take a scenicdrive to Kim Sha beach in Simpson Bay, passingby the Cay Hill lookout point.

Upon arrival, you’ll be given a safety briefing andinstruction before boarding your double or singlekayak and setting off. You’ll head out into the Simpson Bay saltwater lagoon, paddlingtowards the Bellevue mangroves. Your guide willpoint out the wildlife species that make this areatheir home and the imaginary water borderbetween the Dutch and French sides of theisland.

From the mangroves you’ll paddle to a sandybeach within the bay, where you can take sometime to relax and enjoy a refreshing swim.

A scenic drive will take you from the capital ofRoseau, heading east towards the LaudatMountain range. You’ll pass through the lush andverdant valley rising up to 3000 feet above sealevel.

On arrival at the Middleham Trail, you’llcommence on an exciting hike that will take youthrough some of Dominica’s beautiful ruggedscenery. You guide will point out some of thefascinating varieties of local flora, fauna andwildlife.

As you arrive at Middleham Falls, sometimesknown as ‘The Jewel’, capture on camera thebeauty of this 400-foot tumbling waterfall. Youmay wish to cool off and take a refreshing dip inthe crystal clear waters or just take in the stunningview.

Your return hike will head back along the sameroute and at the end of your tour a refreshinglocal fruit bowl will be offered, before returningto Roseau.

Essential information. This is a challenging hikeand is only suitable for those in good physicalcondition. Please take a bottle of water. Children may not participate. Upon arrival, you’ll board a wooden rowboatand set off along the ‘Indian River’, formerly usedby the Carib Indians in their trade with theEuropeans. The Historic Garrison SOMETHING DIFFERENT 3½

An opportunity to visit the historic Garrisonarea, an integral part of the heritage andhistory of Barbados.

Setting off from the port, you’ll take a drivethrough the bustling capital of Bridgetown,passing by the parliament houses and the 1813statue of Admiral Horatio Nelson, before arrivingat the historic Garrison area. ‘The Garrison’, as itis known locally, has been declared a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site and was the base andheadquarters for the British West Indies regimentin Barbados. Today it houses the BarbadosDefence Force, including the Coast Guard Forceand Cadet Corps.

A guided tour will show you the GeorgeWashington House and the many well preserved18th and 19th century military buildings. Therewill also be an opportunity to browse in the giftshop.

Afterwards, a brief drive will take you to CharlesFort where a soft drink or rum punch will beserved. You’ll also experience a reenactment ofthe changing of the sentry, performed by theZoave Band and Garrison Soldiers, before thereturn drive to the port.

Essential information. This tour involvesaround 1 hour of walking over varying terrain,which includes some gravel surfaces. Thereare steps to negotiate at George WashingtonHouse and a moderate incline to accessCharles’s Fort. Flat, comfortable shoes arerecommended.

Hunte’s Gardens and Orchid World SOMETHING DIFFERENT 4

Explore two of the island’s favouriteattractions, a must for those with a passion forgardens and orchids.

Hunte’s Gardens are located in the lush hills ofSt Joseph’s and are the creation of localhorticulturist Anthony Hunte. To reach theGardens, you’ll take a scenic 40 minute drivefrom the port. The Gardens have an unusual flair,with pathways leading to a series of mini-gardensembedded within the main Garden. As youwander through, listen out for the subtle soundsof classical music playing. During your visit a glassof rum punch or freshly squeezed juice will beoffered.

Orchid World is your next stop, which is set in6½ acres of landscaped interior highlands and ishome to over 30,000 exquisite orchids. Ameandering path winds its way betweenoutcrops of coral, rock gardens, cool shadygullies and tranquil ponds.

Thousands of orchids are grown in shaded housesand outside on freestanding palisades. In front ofthe wonderful blooms are information boardsoffering facts about these unusual plants.

On your return journey to the port, you’ll pass thewest coast also known as the ‘Platinum Coast’. This coastline is home to Holetown, the sitewhere the first settlers landed in 1627, and todayis a haven for the rich and famous.
