The Power of WE! To us that means this community coming together to be stronger. There are certainly individual heroes in the Chattanooga area, but the power of WE is about the amazing things we can do when we all put our efforts and energy toward a common goal. A goal that is making our community a better place for all.
The donors, volunteers and associated staff at CHI Memorial have demonstrated that power of coming together for the common good in uncommon ways over the past year. WE have made contributions of our financial resources, our valuable time and every last ounce of energy to work long hours caring for patients.
This year CHI Memorial was given a 5 star rating by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid – the highest ranking possible, Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade "A, " Best Regional Hospital by US News and World Report and Best of the Best Hospital by Chattanooga Times Free Press for the 12th consecutive year. These awards and rankings showing our commitment to excellence and are due to the hard work of our staff and support from the community – the Power of WE.
We are pleased to feature stories from some of our family members in this report – Stephanie, Dr. Warren, Zoe, and Will demonstrate the impact WE have had on their lives and the lives of patients and families served every day.
Through your generosity thousands upon thousands of our citizens have received the best healthcare available.
We believe in the Power of WE!
Best wishes for good health,

How funds are raisedAt CHI Memorial Foundation a diverse group of donors supports our ministry through a variety of ways – annual donations, grants, planned and estate gifts, and attending events – we, and the patients we serve, are forever grateful.
Donations, both large and small, enable the Foundation to provide cutting edge technology, build and support health education and community outreach programs, and support those who cannot afford the costs of health care.
100% of donations go directly to the donor designated purpose and stay local. No contributions are used to fund Foundation administrative expenses.

WE SUPPORTThrough her husband Gerald’s 17-year struggle with leukemia, Stephanie Sinkfield has experienced CHI Memorial’s care stretching from the emergency department to critical care to the oncology unit.
“What I really loved about CHI Memorial was the consistency,’’ Stephanie says. “We always had exceptional service.’’
Married for 15 years, Gerald died in 2020 at age 52. The two shared a son, Xavier, now seven years old.
Gerald’s years of care involved many CHI Memorial physicians, but he was especially close to oncologist Darrell Johnson, M.D.
“Gerald and Dr. Johnson became friends,’’ says Stephanie. “He was with Gerald when he took his last breath. He was standing right beside me.”
“I will never forget what Dr. Johnson said to me. When Gerald was first diagnosed with cancer, he was given about a 10 percent chance of survival. Dr. Johnson told him he was a poster child, since he was not supposed to survive anything. He survived for 15 years,’’ explains Stephanie.
“When Gerald took his last breath, Dr. Johnson grabbed me and said, ‘He wasn’t supposed to make it, Stephanie, past the first year, and look what God has done. I was here when Gerald was diagnosed, and I am here when he’s going to heaven.’ He loved Gerald and me like a friend.”
That love and loyalty demonstrated by CHI Memorial caregivers drew Stephanie to give back to the hospital. Stephanie is a State Farm owner/agent and has served as a CHI Memorial Foundation board member for five years.
“Gerald and I have always been intentional about who we give to and how we give,’’ she explains. “We want to make sure the mission we give to aligns with our faith. CHI Memorial’s mission aligns perfectly with how we feel as people.”
“We want people to have the best medical care, no matter if they have one penny or millions. CHI Memorial cares about the janitors AND the doctors. We have seen that in action.”
That love and loyalty demonstrated by CHI Memorial caregivers drew Stephanie to give back to the hospital.

Flexibility was the key characteristic of Pink! 2021. Due to pandemic concerns, the 16th annual Pink! was virtual and was held on May 21. Co-chairs Amy Arrowsmith, Julie Brandao and Alisa Stipanov were creative and adaptable leaders. A net cash total of $293,667 was raised. The gala has raised a total of $4.9 million since 2006.
Our theme this year was "A Night in the Emerald City: There’s No Place Like Home." Attendees planned their own Pink! parties in their homes. Guests enjoyed an elegant “take home’’ dinner and watched the messages of hope from patients and medical providers at the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center. The evening ended with a virtual dance party by the popular band Party on the Moon.
We are thankful for all our sponsors and attendees for their support of Pink! in this challenging time. All of the funds raised stay in our community to support the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial. Funds from the 2021 Pink! will be used to build a new breast center in the Cleveland area and expand services at CHI Memorial Hixson. A portion of gifts will also benefit the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund.

May 14-21, 2021Color Chattanooga Pink! continues to grow! Our 2021 weeklong event was highlighted by “Pink!'d Day.’’ Led by co-chairs Karlene Claridy and Katie Warren, committee members divided Chattanooga into regions and spent an afternoon visiting businesses with a Pink! launch kit. We added a flower giveaway at Hamilton Place Mall. Scholarship winners with the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund presented flowers to shoppers. Each flower included a mammogram reminder card. Many committee members and supporters decorated their doors pink to show support for Pink! and the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center.
Color Chattanooga Pink! T-shirts were popular as always, with several local businesses selling shirts for us. Hospital employees were faithful customers. We enjoyed seeing our co-workers wear their shirts to work on Fridays in May.
We are especially grateful to our Color Chattanooga Pink! Week sponsor, Tennessee Oncology. Thanks to all our friends who supported our efforts to turn Chattanooga pink and spread the word about the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center!

Zoe Hamilton has experienced CHI Memorial from two perspectives—first as a breast cancer patient and now as a nurse tech in the Emergency Department.
Zoe was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. She was a 20-year-old who had just completed her sophomore year at Auburn University. The young survivor says she was given “amazing” care by the nurses and staff at CHI Memorial. Dr. Betsy Washburn was her breast surgeon, and the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center staff was supportive at every level, she says.
Now 22 years old, Zoe is a nursing student at Southern Adventist University and hopes to be hired at CHI Memorial when she graduates in December 2022. Her experience as a patient confirmed her professional calling.
“It really solidified my drive and my passion for nursing,’’ she explains. “The nurses who took care of me inspired me to be like them.’’
Zoe is a recipient of a MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund award. “I am so thankful to be a scholarship winner,’’ she says. “I have definitely not had the average college experience. It helps that I’m getting financial support, but I have also made so many new friends that I am really thankful for.’’
People should invest in CHI Memorial because of the staff, according to Zoe. “The staff is phenomenal, and I don’t just say that because I work here,’’ she says with a laugh. “I have been treated by many of the staff members at CHI Memorial and they are all so compassionate and caring. Many of them are selfless, which is so important when you are taking care of people in need.’’
Zoe says her experience as a breast cancer patient is part of her ministry as she prepares for a career as a caregiver.
“I am trying to use my experience as a nurse tech to not only spread my story, but to spread God’s word and His love.’’
"The nurses who took care of me inspired me to be like them."

MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Foundation/Mel’s Club
In January 2021, CHI Memorial Foundation and The MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Foundation merged together to benefit the Chattanooga community.
The MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund at CHI Memorial Foundation is a college scholarship program for children who have either lost a parent to breast cancer, have a parent who is a breast cancer survivor, or have a parent who is currently in treatment. The organization was founded as an independent nonprofit in 2002 by MaryEllen Locher, a long-time news anchor and health reporter for WTVC in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She started the foundation during her own battle with breast cancer. MaryEllen passed away in 2005 after her third bout with cancer.
The MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund at CHI Memorial Foundation has awarded more than 540 scholarships totaling $981,000 over the past 19 years. The awards are designed to ease the financial and emotional burdens faced by families dealing with breast cancer.
Mel’s Club, part of the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund, was launched in 2014. Mel’s Club has educated thousands of girls in area schools on the importance of breast health beginning at any early age. The program uses a curriculum developed by the Prevent Cancer Foundation in cooperation with the Howard University Cancer Center. Mel’s Club presentations are available for high school and college-aged young women in schools, church youth groups, or civic and community agencies. Each student is given a packet of information to take home and share with other women in their families. While breast cancer statistically impacts older women at a higher rate, younger women are affected as well. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women ages 15 to 39, according to national statistics.
MaryEllen Locher Scholarship winners for the 2021-22 academic year represent 14 area high schools in Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia. Recipients are:

CHI Memorial Foundation hosted the virtual 20th Cam Busch Arts for Health Series, in partnership with Hunter Museum of American Art, on Thursday, March 18, 2021. Proceeds from the Cam Busch Arts for Health Series support the Arts in Healthcare Program at CHI Memorial.
This virtual event featured guest speaker Eric Booth, in collaboration with PopUp Project. Booth is a recipient of the nation’s highest award in arts education, and was named one of the 25 most influential people in the arts. He has been a faculty member at Juilliard, Tanglewood, The Kennedy Center, and Lincoln Center Education. In 2018, he launched the International Teaching Artist Collaborative, a year-round program building a global network of artists who work in community and educational settings, including work with artists in the Chattanooga region.
PopUp Project is a highly acclaimed dance and production company based in Chattanooga, with a vision to support a vibrant, diverse and sustainable arts community. Their work is innovative, responding to history, culture, and social environments by recognizing that artists bring life, perspective, and a unique sense of place to their communities. In collaboration with Eric Booth, PopUp dancers created a dynamic dance phrase with the virtual audience to animate concepts of health, learning, and social justice through the arts.
Special thanks to the Cam Busch Arts for Health Council for their dedicated leadership and passion for the arts in health care.
Note: In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated innovative approaches to the Arts for Health Series. The 2020 program was first postponed, and then, with the support of a group of donors and the Hunter Museum of American Art, the decision was made to cancel the program and create a video honoring local artists who have been supportive of CHI Memorial’s Arts in Healthcare program.

CHI Memorial’s Elizabeth R. Smith Melanoma 5K & Walk Pivots to Virtual In order to keep everyone safe while educating the community about the dangers of melanoma, the 8th and 9th annual Elizabeth’s OutRun Melanoma 5k transitioned to virtual races.
Since this family-friendly event was virtual, participants were able to choose when and where they ran. Whether in their neighborhood, on their favorite trail, or at the gym, participants ran or walked and sent in their results. For those with a competitive spirit, there was an option to upload their official 5K time through the race GPS app.
All proceeds from this event benefited the Elizabeth R. Smith Melanoma Program at CHI Memorial Rees Skillern Cancer Institute, which supports the prevention, awareness, and research of melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. CHI Memorial’s Melanoma Program has received the Melanoma Hope Network Center of Excellence designation, one of only 17 centers in the country, and the only one in Tennessee.
Thank you to our many sponsors for their ongoing support, especially during this pandemic.

Will Clegg is a busy husband, father and public accounting professional. He chooses to invest his time and talents into CHI Memorial because of the return it brings to his family and our community.
A partner at HHM CPAs, Will was spurred to raise funds for CHI Memorial by the number of his colleagues who have been touched by breast cancer. He is a three-year board member with CHI Memorial Foundation and has been involved with the organization for the past six years. Will and his wife, Sarah, co-chaired Pink! in 2020. Funds raised that year helped the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center purchase a mobile mammography coach, the first in the region to offer 3D mobile mammography.
“The mobile mammography coach reaches far and wide into the community and accommodates individuals who may not have time for care or access to it,’’ Will says. “It is really empowering to see the number of lives it touches. The number of people who can be screened is so powerful. This is life work that people are doing.’’
CHI Memorial is special to Will because of the care his family and friends have received here through the years. “Just to see their passion for care is nothing like anything I’ve ever witnessed before. It’s always patient first,’’ he says. “Their passion for help is just inspiring to watch. There’s no one who provides care like CHI Memorial does.’’
Will believes investments in CHI Memorial help build a stronger community, from Hixson to downtown Chattanooga to North Georgia.
“Every dollar we are able to raise with the CHI Memorial Foundation stays 100 percent in our community,’’ he explains. “Investing in CHI Memorial helps us reinvent our area. The more we are able to invest in care, the stronger our community will be.”
"It’s always patient first"

2020 - 2021 Friends of CHI Memorial CouncilThe Friends of CHI Memorial Council, led by chair Sue Culpepper, guides a team of community volunteers in raising funds to support a very special cause – CHI Memorial’s Healthcare Heroes Care Fund. Since March 2020, the medical staff has been dealing with unprecedented challenges of treating COVID-19 patients and fighting COVID-19 in our community. The Healthcare Heroes Care Fund ensured front-line medical staff felt supported by the community - by providing financial support for those struggling to provide for their families, equipment to ensure staff safety, and programs to help care for their well-being. Funds were also raised to provide four college scholarships to health care professionals specializing in nursing.

MAGIC | Memorial Associates Giving to Improve our Community Every day, we are called to respond to the needs of others around us, whether it’s our patients, the underserved in our community, or our fellow co-workers. Our CHI Memorial employees have always answered the call, giving over $3 million dollars since the program’s inception in 2003 through contributions to the MAGIC program.
The 2020-2022 MAGIC campaign supported the Employee Emergency Fund to provide employees with financial assistance during a time of crisis. Since 2003, 512 employees have received help from the Employee Emergency Fund for a total of $330,000. Since October 2019, donations to the MAGIC campaign assisted departments from across our three campuses to purchase much-needed equipment and program support with grants totaling $90,000.

Caring Spirit Program Offering a hand to hold. Giving a reassuring smile. Going an extra step. Sharing an encouraging word.
Simple gestures of kindness mean the most to us. Patients, family members, and friends are often grateful for the difference caregivers make in their lives during their time here at CHI Memorial. As gift of thanks, donations are made to CHI Memorial Foundation and a note of appreciation is included. The Foundation is happy to present Caring Spirit Awards as a way to recognize our wonderful caregivers and commemorate the generosity of our donors. These donations are returned back to CHI Memorial to support services chosen by the donor. These are just a few of our remarkable healthcare heroes!
Comments from Grateful Patients
“The nurses on the 3rd floor in Hixson were very helpful in the care of my husband and went beyond their regular duties to encourage us and help us. They were a blessing. Thank you!”
“Amanda gave me excellent care. She was very kind and compassionate. I never had someone care as much as she did and with such a loving touch.”
“Dr. Nelson was personable, professional and gave excellent care. He was meant to be a physician and projects CHI Memorial in the very best way.“

Dr. Eric Conn’s desire as a physician was to be a bridge between his patients and The Chattanooga Heart Institute. Now, the Institute’s lobby and first floor, recently remodeled in his honor, is a welcoming area that eases the transition for patients as they arrive for care.
Dr. William Warren was instrumental in efforts to pay tribute to Dr. Conn, who he called “my most important personal mentor.’’
Dr. Conn, who died in 2017, was one of the founders of The Chattanooga Heart Institute and a long-time cardiologist there. The tribute to him came about organically, Dr. Warren says. His co-workers, former patients, family and friends all wanted to find a way to remember him. The remodeling project was a natural way to honor him, since the lobby sits right next to the patient entrance. The most meaningful element of the new area, according to Dr. Warren, is a portrait of Dr. Conn painted by a colleague, Dr. David Salerno.
“Dr. Conn was an incomparable leader for CHI Memorial and our city for many decades,’’ Dr. Warren says. “He was able to keep his focus on what was best for the patients, and he made a tremendous impact on physicians as well.’’ Dr. Conn’s attitude is typical of CHI Memorial staff and leaders, Dr. Warren believes.
Dr. Warren has been associated with The Chattanooga Heart Institute for 18 years. He is a managing partner there and a past chairman of the CHI Memorial Board of Directors.
“At CHI Memorial, things are not always about a business plan and finances,’’ Dr. Warren says. “We are about patient care and community.’’
Supporting CHI Memorial is “investing in something bigger than ourselves,’’ says the long-time physician. “It speaks to the care of our community. The mission of CHI Memorial helps provide needed health care services, regardless of the ability to pay. An organization like CHI Memorial is fundamental to our city.’’
"An organization like CHI Memorial is fundamental to our city."
Chattanooga Heart Institute Lobby Dedicated in Memory of Dr. Conn
Contributions in Dr. Eric Conn's memory from family, friends, and colleagues allowed the first floor of The Chattanooga Heart Institute to be renovated and the lobby dedicated in his memory. Dr. Conn was one of four founding members of the practice. During the lobby dedication ceremony, he was fondly remembered for his leadership and love for his patients. He was instrumental in bringing The Chattanooga Heart Institute and CHI Memorial together in partnership, as well as a driving force in the development of the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center. David Salerno, MD, a retired cardiologist from The Chattanooga Heart Institute and friend of Dr. Conn, painted a portrait of Dr. Conn that now hangs in the practice's main lobby.

Memorial Auxiliary and Volunteer ServicesWhen Fiscal Year 2021 started July 1, 2020, volunteers were on stand-by due to COVID-19, but pledges and projects and communication continued in creative ways with Zoom board meetings, drive-through flu shots, updates from leadership, and many prayers. Auxiliary funding of the Clinical Pastoral Education program brought 10 individuals to successfully learn and grow and assist the professional chaplain team overwhelmed with care of COVID-19 patients. Auxiliary scholarships continued to assist students and staff with advanced school in health care fields. Volunteers walked and helped sponsor the Melanoma Run/Walk and provided funds for a We Care event for cancer patients. Volunteers worked at home creating rare wood crosses for chaplains to give to patients, crafting items for hospitalized patients on special occasions, keeping the newsletter alive, and willingly waiting to return to work.
At the end of 2020, the good news came that CHI Memorial would provide vaccination for the volunteers to begin returning to hospital campuses. One volunteer restarted their work during the vaccination fairs, by providing piano music. Hospital leaders came out to welcome volunteers back on February 1. The pet therapists returned with their dogs in time to bring cheer throughout the hospital during Nurses Week, and volunteers helped with Color Chattanooga Pink! T-shirt sales to benefit the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center. Volunteers contributed to the renovation of the Eric Conn lobby dedicated in June and were welcomed at the new Surgery Center on the Parkway. During the last five months of the fiscal year, volunteers gave a total of 14,448 hours throughout our CHI Memorial campuses.
