TAXIS

Getting to and from Las Vegas McCarran International Airport is easy with taxi firms like Western Cab Company or Desert Cab Company. Jump in a taxi to your hotel, and the driver will take a direct route to your accommodation, whether you are staying at Caesar’s Palace on The Strip, or another neighbourhood in the city.

Taxi services at the airport are regulated by the Nevada Taxicab Authority. Depending on where your hotel is, fares range in price from around $16 to $30 for stops on The Strip. Catch a cab outside airport Terminal One, on the east side of baggage claim. Alternatively, you can take your taxi from Terminal Three on Level Zero. A standard two dollar charge is added to all fares from the airport and some companies don’t accept credit card payments.

Tips for International TravellersYour international flight has just landed in Las Vegas and you’re eager to jump off the plane and be a part of all the excitement. Before you get down onto the Las Vegas Strip and in amongst it all, though, there are a few little things you need to consider, such as: complying with local laws; paying taxes; exchanging currency; carrying your passport safely and securely; getting clued up on tipping etiquette; and learning how to spin that wheel for a few dollars more! Get these basics right and you can sit back up and lap up the Las Vegas lifestyle on your trip with Expedia.

Tips

CARRYING YOUR PASSPORT

It’s an age-old passport question: to carry or not to carry? The most important thing is not to mislay it. Undoubtedly the best way to avoid this is to leave your passport in a hotel safe. 99% of Vegas hotels will have one of these and it can bring real peace of mind. While it’s useful to have a passport to hand when you’re renting a car or trying to enter a nightclub, it is often possible to get by with a valid driving license and a photocopy of your passport. If you really need your passport with you then it is a good idea to invest in a money belt that you can hide somewhere on your person.

Tips

EXCHANGING CURRENCY

Exchanging currency is one of those things that happens a lot in Vegas, because for some reason people seem to hand over their dollars in big buildings called casinos! Should you need to use this service you can either go to a bank, or most casinos will have the facility to change your money onsite. Indeed it is often the case that the exchange rates are better in Vegas casinos than at the airport or your hotel. Why? Because the casinos expect you to spend all those crisp new notes almost as soon as you have them in your hand. Have you got the will power to prove them wrong?

Page 101: POCKET GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS - Viewfinder Travel Blog

Tips

UNDERSTANDINGLEGALITIES

Las Vegas is generally pretty louche when it comes to, well, pretty much everything, but there are a few rules and regulations to keep in mind. While it’s ok to wander down the strip with a beer in your hand, it’s a very bad idea to do the same in a moving vehicle. Casinos tend to be very security conscious so unless you want a forceful tap on the shoulder it’s a good idea not to take photos anywhere near the tables. Tipping is more or less mandatory in Vegas: a dollar or two per drink minimum. You can’t gamble or drink in Vegas until you are 21 years of age. Remember to drink and gamble responsibly whatever age you are!

Page 102: POCKET GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS - Viewfinder Travel Blog

Tips

CALCULATING TAX

One thing that UK travellers to Las Vegas – and indeed other parts of the US – may not be used to is tax being calculated at the point of sale. This happens in restaurants and retail outlets, and may be confusing as products tend to be advertised at their pre-tax price. At the point of writing there is an 8.1% sales tax on purchases and a 12% tax on hotel rooms in Las Vegas. Due to this discrepancy between advertised prices and actual sales prices it is commonly accepted that sales assistants do no expect to be tipped. This, however, is not a hard and fast rule – if you feel you have received good service offer a tip.

Page 103: POCKET GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS - Viewfinder Travel Blog

Tips

TIPPING

Tipping is par for the course in America. If you don’t do it you’ll spend your holiday running from establishment to establishment like some kind of fugitive. Las Vegas runs on great hospitality and the cogs are oiled with healthy tips for good, great and excellent service. If you are eating out, 15-20% of your total bill is a good rule of thumb for a tip. If you are tipping at gaming tables, it is always good practice to hand over a small bet to croupiers, keno runners and attendants. For hotel workers who carry your bags it’s OK to hand over one or two dollars. For concierge services five dollars is acceptable. Get used to it – it’s the rules!

Page 104: POCKET GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS - Viewfinder Travel Blog

Tips

LEARNING TO GAMBLE

For most visitors to Vegas, a quick overview of the rules of some of the popular games will suffice. You can pick up this information online very quickly. The next stage in your training might involve talking to a guy in a cowboy hat at a bar, or a friendly concierge. Some games – like poker for instance – involve complex strategies that can take minutes to learn and years to master. The main thing to remember is to have fun and not to ‘chase it’. While winning in Vegas can be a euphoric experience, losing can create a black hole in your budget. Good luck!

RTC BUSES

The local bus service in Las Vegas is run by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC). The Bonneville Transit Center is a transfer hub for many routes, making it easy to get around the city.

The Deuce route along Las Vegas Boulevard runs 24 hours a day, while most other routes operate between 5.30am and 1.30am. The Deuce’s name refers to it being serviced by a double-decker bus and it operates a useful route for tourists, stopping in front of all major casinos. Something to be aware of is that the popularity of this service means that it can become very busy, particularly at night.

MONORAILS

For an alternative to taxis and buses, try the Las Vegas Monorail. Stopping at seven different stations, including major Vegas venues and hotels such as Caesars Palace, the MGM Grand, and the Paris Hotel, the monorail makes getting around Las Vegas plain sailing. It’s a fun, economical and easy way to get acquainted with the city and take in some of Nevada’s finest views.

As well as the main Las Vegas Monorail, several free monorails operate 24 hours a day with stops along The Strip, although you may prefer to take a leisurely stroll too. Guests at the Monte Carlo and Bellagio resorts might find these useful, especially during the hottest months of the year.

SHUTTLE BUSES

Getting along the Strip is easy, thanks to the free shuttle buses that operate here. Several hotels and resorts run these shuttles, which stop off at various boulevard highlights and allow you to explore Las Vegas conveniently and comfortably. Hotels where complimentary shuttle buses stop regularly include the Hard Rock Hotel, Bally’s and Rio. Operating times vary, so it’s worth checking with the concierge at your accommodation before stepping out to wait.

Note that you can’t carry luggage on board the hotel shuttles, unless the bus is travelling to the airport. You should also be aware that shuttle buses can fill up quite quickly during peak times as visitors set about getting the party started in good old Vegas.

BUS TOURS

Several companies run bus tours in and around Las Vegas, taking you to see Nevada highlights. Some city tours incorporate an extra element of fun, with celebrity lookalikes as your guide, or bight red double-decker buses to transport you between each stop.

By day you can head to the Hoover Dam, a mere hour outside of Las Vegas, and spend a couple of hours at this famous landmark, or you can take a trip to the awe inspiring Grand Canyon. By night you can go on a tour of Las Vegas’ historic neon signs and also see sights such as the Bellagio’s water fountains, which light up in a blaze of glory.

TAXIS

A popular way to get around Las Vegas, there are plenty of taxi companies that will take you to your destination, especially at ranks outside of hotels and resorts. A taxi from McCarran International Airport to a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip will cost you between 15 to 30 dollars.

Unlike the movies might have you believe, and cool as it is, hailing a cab is not really acceptable practice on the Strip. Taxi drivers can receive a ticket for picking you up this way, so head for the nearest taxi rank or ask your hotel to ring a taxi for you.

Page 111: POCKET GUIDE TO LAS VEGAS - Viewfinder Travel Blog

LIMOUSINES

You can really get in on the glitz and glamour of Vegas by exploring the city in a limousine. Hit the Strip in a simple stretch limo for 7-8 passengers, or climb aboard a powerful luxury vehicle with a disco ball or hot tub. A stretch limousine will cost you around 50 dollars per hour – depending on which company you choose – whereas more luxurious options will cost you double and then some.

Limousine drivers can’t approach you, so if you’re in the Las Vegas party mood it’s up to you to approach the vehicle and ask if they can take a fare. You’re in Vegas, so why not experience everything it has to offer?

RENTAL CARS

Many big and local brands operate car hire services in Las Vegas. You can rent a car just a few miles from the airport when you land, which makes getting into the centre of the city a smooth experience. Be aware that this can be a slightly more expensive option. If you fancy doing some spontaneous day trips, keep an eye out for car rental stations near your hotel instead and you might save some money. Alternatively book in advance to ensure availability.

Have you decided on a particular car rental company for your Las Vegas adventure? Check the rates constantly, since these can vary in different seasons. Don’t leave it too long to book, in case you miss out on a good deal before you travel!
