1 PocketLab iOS App User Manual PocketLab iOS App User Manual The PocketLab prototype works with iOS devices with the latest Bluetooth chips (4.0 and newer). The currently supported devices are: iPhone 4s and newer iPad 3rd gen and newer, includes iPad Air iPad Mini iPod Touch 5th gen and newer PocketLab Sensor Hardware 1. Pull the plasc strip scking through the PocketLab case to remove the baery terminal cover. 2. Note: Somemes when the plasc strip is removed, the baery pops out of the baery holder. If the LED lights do not turn ON when the buon is pressed, check to see if the baery has popped out. App Installaon and Setup 1. Make sure your iOS version is up to date. i. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Sengs >> General >> Soſtware Update ii. Your soſtware needs to be updated to iOS 8.3 or newer to funcon correctly. iii. If you need to update the soſtware, follow the instrucons to download the latest version of iOS. 2. Download the free The PocketLab app from the Apple App Store. 3. Aſter installaon is complete, go to your device sengs and turn Bluetooth ON. 4. Click on the PocketLab icon to launch the app. 5. Agree to the access privileges that the PocketLab app needs to funcon. The PocketLab app needs access to the Bluetooth hardware to connect to the sensor and the camera and microphone to record video synchronized with the sensor data. PocketLab iOS App User Manual The PocketLab prototype works with iOS devices with the latest Bluetooth chips (4.0 and newer). The currently supported devices are:

PocketLab Sensor Hardware

1. Pull the plastic strip sticking through the PocketLab case to remove the battery terminal cover. 2. Note: Sometimes when the plastic strip is removed, the battery pops out of the battery holder. If the LED

lights do not turn ON when the button is pressed, check to see if the battery has popped out. App Installation and Setup

1. Make sure your iOS version is up to date. i. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings >> General >> Software Update ii. Your software needs to be updated to iOS 8.3 or newer to function correctly. iii. If you need to update the software, follow the instructions to download the latest version of iOS.

2. Download the free The PocketLab app from the Apple App Store. 3. After installation is complete, go to your device settings and turn Bluetooth ON. 4. Click on the PocketLab icon to launch the app.

5. Agree to the access privileges that the PocketLab app needs to function. The PocketLab app needs access to the Bluetooth hardware to connect to the sensor and the camera and microphone to record video synchronized with the sensor data.

Connect the PocketLab Sensor and App

1. Press the top button on the PocketLab sensor. The LED indicator will flash alternating red and green. i. If the PocketLab sensor is in close range to the iPad, the sensor will connect automatically. While

the sensor is connecting to the app, the LED indicator will flash red. ii. If the PocketLab sensor is too far away to automatically connect, a message at the bottom of the

connection screen appears and says Pair to the nearest PocketLab. Tap the message to connect.

Displaying Data on the PocketLab App

1. The LED indicator will flash green every 3 seconds while connected to the app. 2. The PocketLab app will automatically move to the graph screen with 3-axis acceleration data streaming in

real-time from the PocketLab sensor. Rotate the PocketLab sensor with respect to the direction of gravity to change the acceleration data.

3. Tap on the Graph button to change which graph screen is displayed. Scroll down the Graph list to see all

the available sensor options.

4. To display two graph screens simultaneously click on the Two‐Graph button in the menu.  5. To change the units of the data press the Ruler icon and select the unit option. 6. To change the rate of the sensor data, press the Speedometer Gauge icon. The slow rate is 1 data 

point/second, medium rate is 10 data points/second, and the fastest rate varies depending on the maximum allowed by each sensor (12‐20 data points/second). 

 

  Recording, Reviewing, and Exporting Data  

1. To record data for an experimental trial, press the Record icon below the graph. The existing graph data will clear and the current graph data will begin recording. To stop a recording, press the Stop icon below the graph.  

2. After you stop the data recording, you can scroll through the recorded data by touching the graph and pinching and zooming. Press the Play button to see the data scroll across the graph. Tap a data point to display the data and time values. 

3. To delete the recorded data and start a new experimental trial press Clear. 4. To save or export the experimental data press the Export icon. 5. Choose the Share Data option to export the raw data as a CSV file. A menu of share options will pop up to 

export the CSV file.  i. Depending on what other apps you have installed and enabled on your device, you can export 

the data through the Mail app, Gmail app, Dropbox, Evernote, AirDrop, Facebook, iMessage, etc. ii. For more share options click on the More icon to enable sharing with other installed apps. 

6. Choose the Share Graph Snapshot option to export the current graph image.  i. The Save Image option will save the graph to the Photos app. ii. Depending on what other apps you have installed and enabled, you will have other export 

options. 7. When you are finished saving and exporting the data, press Clear to return to the Data Display mode.

Recording, Reviewing, and Exporting Sensor and Video Data 1. To enable the video recording mode, press the Display icon on the top right of the screen. The screen will 

toggle between the four display modes:  i. Sensor graph only ii. Video behind the sensor graph iii. Small video window inside sensor graph iv. Small sensor graph inside video window 

 

  

2. To record video and sensor data, press the Record button in one of the three modes that displays the video window. 

3. To stop recoding, press the Stop button. 4. To replay the recorded video and sensor data, press the Play button. 5. To toggle between the four display modes, press the Display icon. 6. You have three export options for the sensor and video data: 

i. Export the video file and sensor data as a CSV file separately ii. Export the camera video and the scrolling sensor graph in a combined movie file iii. Export an image of the current graph screen. 

7. Exporting the combined movie of the camera video and scroll sensor graph requires a lot of video processing. The video processing will take about 3‐5 times longer than the length of the recorded data. So for a 10 second clip, the process will take 30 to 50 seconds depending on the device. 

8. You can export and share the video and sensor data through other apps such as Mail or Dropbox. You can also save the video to the Photo app on your device. 

 

  Disconnecting the sensor 

1. To disconnect the sensor from the PocketLab app, press the top button on the PocketLab sensor once. 2. The LED indicator will stop flashing and the PocketLab app will go to the connection screen. 3. Press the home button to close the PocketLab app.

Sensor out of Range 1. If the sensor moves out of Bluetooth range the sensor and app will disconnect. If you are in the middle of 

a data recording, you can save and export the collected data before the disconnection.
