Lincoln Brewster&s guitar sounds have been res'ected by %any( )e also ha''ens to be a
very high 'ro*ile 'layer o* POD + Live( )is tone is sought a*ter by %any as'iring guitarists
due to his using such a readily available and a**ordable 'iece o* gear *or his tone( While
co''ing his 'atches e-actlycan give you instant grati*ication, . *ind it %uch %ore desirable
to learn how to get better at creating %y own tones by studying great guitar sounds created
by others( /his article is an inde'th analysis o* Lincoln Brewster&s live guitar sounds as
heard through his POD + Live(
1lectric guitar tone
/he hub o* Lincoln Brewster&s electric guitar sound is the Line " %odel o* a 3" Marshall
Ple-i 4u'er Lead run through a variable 5$ 6or variac trans*or%er( /his a%' %odel is run
through a %odeled 892 Marshall cabinet with $election reenbac; 2#s( /he %odeled
%icro'hone is a 4hure 4M#7 'ositioned on a-is to the s'ea;ers( )is %ain use o* this a%'
is *or a %id gain ty'e o* sound as shown here:

4hown above are Brewster&s *avored ;nob settings when he needs a higher gain sound out
o* the Marshall >ariac( /he tone controls still have their use*ul range around the sa%e
'laces as the %oderate gain sound( /he 'ri%ary di**erence is the increased a%' drive(
4o%ti%es this guitarist will use a very low gain setting to get a tasty and gritty sound out o*
his ?ender 4trat( While %ost o* the tone controls re%ain at settings consistent with
Brewster&s high and %oderate gain tones, he uses a bit %ore bass on these cleaned u'
settings( /he increased bass can counteract the thinning o* the sound by the lower gain
settings(
Low gain settings
.n general we can see that Lincoln *avors the %iddle, treble and 'resence controls in the
higher end o* their travel *or all sounds with the >ariac a%' %odel( )e ;ee's the bass
ta%ed, only increasing it a bit when cleaning u' his sound( 1ven on his highest gain tones,
he doesn&t go %uch beyond the 0@ %ar; on the drive, actually 're*erring to ;ee' it around
80@ the %a=ority o* the ti%e(
With the >ariac, Brewster uses the 1A uite *reuently to s%ooth out the sound( ariac is Lincoln Brewster&s go toa%' %odel *or distorted tones, he also %a;es
so%e signi*icant use o* the a%' %odel based on the 3"7 ?ender Dual 4how%an( /his
a%' %odel also goes through a si%ulated 892 cabinet but this ti%e it is eui''ed with
$election /7# s'ea;ers( /hough these are his %ain settings on this a%', he will so%eti%es
bac; o** on the %id control and turn u' the treble(

Fender guitar sound
/his a%' %odel is usually enhanced with a wide boost in the %id *reuencies using the
built in 1A(
Fender EQ setting
/heDouble Showa%' %odel usually has a %odeled $handler /ube Driver in *ront o* it(
/he settings on the /ube Driver are twea;ed to hit the *ront end o* the a%'li*ier a lot harder
while also bee*ing u' the low end and s%oothing o** the to'( Lincoln uses this sto%'bo-
*ro% ti%e to ti%e in *ront o* his >ariac 'atches as well(
Brewster 'lays his electric guitar with a touch o* co%'ression on al%ost all the ti%e( )e
doesn&t vary his settings here at all, using this e**ect oneveryelectric guitar 'atch(
Electric guitar compressor settings
Lincoln uses digital delay on %any o* his 'atches( )e does a lot o* lead wor; and 'lays a
lot o* live shows, a co%bination that bene*its *ro% so%e 'ro%inent delay( Cou can see he
li;es to roll o** the treble very %uch while also ;ee'ing the %i- so%ewhere between subtle
and uite audible re'eats( Delay ti%e tends to center around 320 msbut goes as low as
20 %s and as high as 880 %s(

Common delay settings
)e does use the analog delay %odel very s'aringly( /he included delay %odulation adds a
bit o* e-tra %ove%ent to the sound(
Playing large live venues and a heavy reliance on delay %eans Brewster rarely needs to
'lay with reverb on his electric guitar( When he does, it is usually the Lux Spring%odel
with Dwelland Tonecontrols set to #0@ and %i- set between 38@(
Li;e reverb, Lincoln does not see% to be a big *an o* %odulation e**ects on his electric
guitar sounds( )e never uses a chorus live and has a 'haser on =ust one 'atch(
5coustic guitar tone
Lincoln has a *ew stand by sounds that he relies on *or acoustic guitar sounds =ust li;e he
does *or electric sounds, though the a''roach is uite di**erent( ?or starters, he by'asses
the a%' %odel on all his acoustic 'atches( /hen he uses reverb on al%ost all o* his
acoustic 'atches and uses heavier co%'ression( /he delays are gone, though he does use
a sto%'bo- co%'ressor on one o* the acoustic guitar 'atches(
Acoustic guitar compression settings
Cou can see his co%'ression threshold is set a lot lower *or the acoustic, while also %a;ing
%uch %ore liberal use o* %a;e u' gain( 4ince the Line " co%'ressor see%s to do so%e
auto%atic %a;e u' gain *or you, . thin; the increased gain we&re seeing is due 'erha's tothe wea;er signal *ro% his acoustic guitar 'ic;u's 6versus that o* his 4trat, though it

should be noted that the sweet spotis %uch less e-tre%e than so%e o* his twea;s( When
he doesn&t use the dedicated co%'ressor, Lincoln will use the e! "ompsto%bo-
co%'ressor 6%odeled on a M+ Dynaco%'( 4et the sustain to 0@ and level to @(
1lectricacoustic guitars running direct into the house P5 reuire a bit %ore e-tre%e 1A
settings to sit in the %i- well and 'revent *eedbac; while still allowing uite a bit o* volu%e(
. thin; this is behind the %ore e-tre%e settings we see on Lincoln Brewster&s acoustic
'atches(
Acoustic guitar EQ
/hough there is no a%' %odel on Lincoln&s acoust sounds 6the a%' is by'assed, he has
'laced the reverb in the 'rea%' 'osition(

D: LB>ariachigain #$LB>ariaclogain
Both o* these con*igurations use the 5 'atch button as your %ain electric sound and B as
your alternateelectric sound( .n both cases $ is your cleanest tone, either low gain electric
or the acoustic 'atch and D is yourspecialtyelectric guitar tone 6either high gain *or leads,
or whichever one suits your needs and style best i* you are switching to acoustic( . *ind it
very hel'*ul to ;ee' %y live 'atches down to a %a- o* *our tones *or a given live event( .t is
%uch easier to ;ee' it all in %y head that way( 5lso, it is a very good idea to get used to
co%%on 'atch locations in every ban;, G5 is always %y %ain sound, $ is always %y clean
