Multiplication and Division Equations

The expression 3x means 3 times the value of x.

The Division Property of Equality states that the two sides of an equation remain equal when you divide each side by the same nonzero number.

Example:

20 = 4x÷4÷4

5 = x

The Multiplication Property of Equality states that the two sides of an equation remain equal when you multiply each side by the same number.

Example:

a = -9-4

(-4) a-4

a = 36

= (-4)(-9)

-8y = 24 ÷ -8 ÷ -8

y = -3

30 = 6x ÷ 6 ÷ 6

x = 5

y = -8-3

(-3) y-3

y = 24
