Macavity’s a MysteryCat : he’s called theHidden Paw –

For he’s the mastercriminal who can defythe Law.

He’s the bafflement ofScotland Yard, theFlying Squad despair:

For when they reachthe scene of crime –Macavity’s not there!

Stanza 1 : thumbnail

Macavity is a mysterious cat. The poem describeshow he manages to commit all types of crimesand always escapes from being caught. He isknown as “Hidden Paw” because he is the mastercriminal and can defy any law. Even the famousdetective agency like Scotland Yard and the FlyingSquad(group of police officers in England) are notable to find it out. He is the cause of thebafflement to the police. When the policereaches the scene of crime, he vanishes away.Word – meanings:➢Despair : hopelessness➢Bafflement : to confuse or perplex➢Defy : disobey or resist openly

Macavity, Macavity, there’s no one like Macavity,

He’s broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.

His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,

And when you reach the scene of crime

- Macavity’s not there!

You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air-

But I tell you once and once again, Macavity’s not there!

Stanza 2 : thumbnailNo one is like Macavity. He has broken every humanlaw. He even breaks the law of gravity. He has thepower to rise or float in the air. Macavity’s powers oflevitation can make a fakir stare. After committing acrime, he vanishes away. So when anybody reaches thescene of crime, he will not be able to find him thoughhe may search him in the basement or in the air. Thepoet tells again that it is useless to search for him.

Word – meaning :➢ Levitation : floating in the air without support➢ Fakir : religious man➢ gravity : Gravity is a force which tries to pull

two objects toward each other.➢ Basement : the floor of a building which is partly

or entirely below ground level.

Macavity’s a gingercat, he’s very tall andthin;You would know himif you saw him, forhis eyes are sunkenin.His brow is deeplylined with thought,his head is highlydomed;His coat is dusty fromneglect, his whiskersare uncombed.

He sways his headfrom side to side, withmovements like asnake;

And when you thinkhe’s half asleep, he’salways awake.

Stanza 3 : thumbnail

Then the poet, T S Eliot, proceeds to describe the catby telling us that he is brown in colour, very tall andthin in body. His eyes are sunken and eyebrows aredeeply lined with thought. His head is round in shape.His coat is dusty (means its furs) and his whiskers aretangled (not combed). While moving like a snake, hesways his head from side to side as if in search of someprey. He is so alert that in sleep also it is found awake.

➢ Ginger : refers to the striking coat colour ofMacavity (brown in colour)

➢ Domed : shaped like a rounded vault.➢ Neglect : fail to care for➢Whisker : a long projecting hair growing from the face

or snout of an animal.

Macavity, Macavity ,there’s no one likeMacavity,

For he’s a fiend infeline shape, amonster of depravity.

You may meet him in a by – street, you may see him in the square-

Stanza 4 : thumbnailIn the fourth stanza, the poet says that thereis no one like Macavity in his devilishness. Heis a fiend in the guise of a cat. He is a monsterof wickedness. He may be seen in a by-streetor in a square. But when people come toknow about a crime there, he is foundnowhere.
