    Happiness

    b y R a y m o n d C a r v e r

    So early it's still almost dark out.I'm near the window with coffee,and the usual early morning stuffthat passes for thought.

    When I see the boy and his friendwalking up the roadto deliver the newspaper.

    They wear caps and sweaters,

    and one boy has a bag over his shoulder.They are so happythey aren't saying anything, these boys.

    I think if they could, they would takeeach other's arm.It's early in the morning,and they are doing this thing together.

    They come on, slowly.The sky is taking on light,though the moon still hangs pale over the water.

    Such beauty that for a minutedeath and ambition, even love,doesn't enter into this.

    Happiness. It comes onunexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,

    any early morning talk about it.

    There is another sky

    b y E m i l y D i c k i n s o n

    There is another sky,Ever serene and fair,

    And there is another sunshine,Though it be darkness there;Never mind faded forests, Austin,

    Never mind silent fields -Here is a little forest,Whose leaf is ever green;Here is a brighter garden,

    Where not a frost has been;In its unfading flowersI hear the bright bee hum:Prithee, my brother,Into my garden come!

    If by Rudyard Kipling

    If you can keep your head when all about youAre losing theirs and blaming it on you,If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,But make allowance for their doubting too;If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,Or being lied about, dont deal in lies,Or being hated, dont give way to hating,And yet dont look too good, nor talk too wise:

    If you can dream and not make dreams your master;If you can think and not make thoughts your aim;If you can meet with Triumph and DisasterAnd treat those two impostors just the same;If you can bear to hear the truth youve spokenTwisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,And stoop and build em up with worn-out tools:If you can make one heap of all your winningsAnd risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,And lose, and start again at your beginningsAnd never breathe a word about your loss;If you can force your heart and nerve and sinewTo serve your turn long after they are gone,And so hold on when there is nothing in you

    I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

    BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTHI wandered lonely as a cloud

    That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

    When all at once I saw a crowd,

    A host, of golden daffodils;

    Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

    Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

    Continuous as the stars that shine

    And twinkle on the milky way,

    They stretched in never-ending line

    Along the margin of a bay:

    Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

    Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

    The waves beside them danced; but they

    Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:

    A poet could not but be gay,

    In such a jocund company:

    I gazedand gazedbut little thought

    What wealth the show to me had brought:

    For oft, when on my couch I lie

    In vacant or in pensive mood,

    They flash upon that inward eye

    Which is the bliss of solitude;

    And then my heart with pleasure fills,

    And dances with the daffodils.

    The Road Not Taken by Robert FrostTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I could

    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

    Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claimBecause it was grassy and wanted wear,Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,

    And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!

    Yet knowing how way leads on to wayI doubted if I should ever come back.

    I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference

    Life's Brief Candle

    To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morr ow,Creeps in thi s petty pace from day to dayTo the last syllable of recorded time,

    And all our yesterdays have l ighted foolsThe way to dusty death. Out, out br ief candle!Lif e's but a walking shadows, a poor player,That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

    And then is heard no more; it is a taleTold by an idiot, ful l of sound and fury,

    Signi fying nothing.
