What is Poetry? Poetry is a special kind of writing, it is easier to say what is not poetry, than to define it. Good poetry: Will combine thoughts and feelings. Present the poets unique and special way of looking at things. Use pleasant sounds and rhythms and paint a vivid picture. Often is found in music. Is sometimes organized in a specific way! Makes you think!

Basic Types of Poetry Poetry can be divided into two basic types : Lyrical-this expresses personal feelings or strong emotions. Narrative-tells a story.

Poetry Organization Many poems are written is a very specific and organized format. Others are more like conversation and flow with the poets thoughts and feelings. We will read many types and practice writing many more. The following are some of the more common types of poetry.

Free Verse Free verse is poetry that usually doesnt rhyme and have no certain pattern or rhythm. They are written like conversation. Chocolate cake! Moist and delicious Covered in dark rich icing Every bite is a party in my mouth! Wow.give me more!

Haiku Haiku- the haiku is a three lined Japanese poem about nature.. This particular type of poetry has a limit on the amount of syllables you can have for each line. The first line always has five syllables. The second line has seven syllables. The third line has the same amount as the first line. Below is an example of a haiku: Gentle waterfall, Tripping over rocks and stones Creating beauty

Ballad Ballad- a ballad is a poem that tells a story. Casey At The Bat by Ernest L. Thayer The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day, The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play. And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same, A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

Cinquain Cinquain- a type of poetry in which the first line has one word, the second has two words describing the first line, the third line shows action with three words, the fourth line has four words that convey feeling, and the fifth line refers to line one. Below is an example of a Cinquain: July Hot, muggy Firecrackers pop loudly Exciting, thrilling, and inspiring Patriotic month

Acrostic Acrostic- a poem where the first letter of each line spells a word that can be read vertically Below is an example of an acrostic poem: Summers' gifts of sensational feelings, Heaping happiness in poets' path Awarding praises for poetic data Doses of episodes, where lived Original thoughts; orgasmic tempo Weavers of words; morning's dew Prosing spewing from every lip Operetta unions, written in solo Energy of many, sharing love Tears touching every heart Rivalry forgotten, visions clear You and I spreading peace and joy

ABC Poem This is a specific type of acrostic poem that uses the order of the alphabet to set up its lines. The rules are: Use 5 lines First 4 lines use words or phrases that explain a feeling or set the mood The letters that begin the sentences must be in alphabetical order, but do not have to begin with A Last line must be a sentence. Limerick Limerick- a limerick is humorous nonsense verse consisting of a triplet and couplet, making it a five line poem. Lines one, two, and five are the triplet and rhyme. Lines three and four form a rhyming couplet. Here is an example: There was an old man of Nantucket, who kept all his cash in a bucket; But his daughter, named Nan, Ran away with a man, And as for the bucket- Nantucket Oliver Wendell Holmes

DIAMONTE The diamonte is fun and easy to write. The purpose is to go from the subject at the top of the diamond to another totally different (and sometimes opposite) subject at the bottom. Alliteration Poem A poem that utilizes the same sound throughout the poem. Big brown bear, blue ball, beautiful baboon blowing bubbles biking backward, bumped black bug's banana boxes AND Billy Bunny's breadbasket AND Brother Bob's baseball bus AND Buster Beagle's banjo- bagpipe-bungle band... And that's what broke baby birds balloon

List Poems This is a type of poem that requires the poet to make lists of things to use in the poem. It is usually about a specific topic and gives the reader a good idea how the poet feels about something. It uses a specific format and is repetitive. I love to read I love to garden I love to hike in the woods I love life!

Couplets Couplets have two lines that rhyme. Here are five couplets from poems in TICKLE DAY: POEMS FROM FATHER GOOSE by Charles Ghigna. from LITTLE DADDY LONGLEGS Little Daddy Longlegs played in the sun, Climbing up the front steps just for fun. from TURTLE TROUBLE Tell me if you think you know How to make a turtle go.

Clerihew A Clerihew is a comic verse consisting of two couplets and a specific rhyming scheme, aabb invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875- 1956) at the age of 16. The poem is about/deals with a person/character within the first rhyme. In most cases, the first line names a person, and the second line ends with something that rhymes with the name of the person. Garfield the cat On his rear he sat. Eating lasagna galore. All about the decor.

Epitaph An epitaph is a brief poem inscribed on a tombstone praising a deceased person, usually with rhyming lines. Example #1:What happened to me, was not good, Hit by a car, bounced off the hood, Would get up, if only I could, Now here I lay, where once I stood.

Ode Ode-An Ode is a poem praising and glorifying a person, place or thing. Ode To A Butterfly Oh! the butterfly he flutters all day, he roams the skies with some delay. He alights on trees, fences and roses, to whatever attracts his fancy he will do his poses. He's up, he's down he dances with the breeze, he comes, he goes and does it with ease. As I watch him in pure delight, I begin to wonder if he knows his own plight. For soon spring turns into summer then summer flies quickly by, the sun setting early into a darkening sky. Lyric Poem A short poem Usually written in first person point of view Expresses an emotion or an idea or describes a scene Do not tell a story and are often musical (Many of the poems we read will be lyrics.)
