Vocabulary & Terms

Alliteration – the repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of words. Usually used to bring attention to a line or the subject of a line. Assonance – repetition of the same or similar vowel sound. Usually used to bring attention to a line or the subject of a line. Connotation – associations and implications that go beyond a word’s literal meaning. This is closely related to symbolism. Consonance – repetition of the same or similar consonant sound. Usually used to bring attention to a line or the subject of a line. Denotation – the literal, dictionary meaning of a word. This is closely related to the surface reading of a poem or piece of literature. Diction – an author’s choice of words. Poetic diction – the use of elevated language, rather than ordinary language. Commonly

used in 18th century writing. Formal diction – the use of dignified, impersonal and elevated language. Middle diction – a less formal diction, that which is spoken by most educated people. Informal diction – writing with a conversational and sometimes colloquial diction. End-Stopped - a verse line ending at a grammatical boundary or break, such as a dash, a closing parenthesis, or punctuation such as a colon, a semi-colon, or a period. The opposite to an end-stopped line is a line subject to enjambment. Enjambment - the running over of a sentence or phrase from one verse to the next, without terminal punctuation, hence not end-stopped. Such verses can be called run-on lines. Figurative Language - language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. Simile, metaphor, alliteration, assonance, consonance, and personification are all examples of figurative language. Forms – a specific way of writing a poem that prescribes how many lines, stanzas, or syllables a poem contains, or what rhyme scheme or metrical scheme the poem should have. The following, while no where near a complete list of all poetic forms, includes the definitions of some common forms: Concrete - verse that emphasizes non-linguistic elements in its meaning, such as typeface

or the arrangement of the words on the page that gives a visual image of the topic Free Verse - rhythmical but non-metrical, non-rhyming lines. These may have a deliberate

rhythm or cadence but seem to disappoint the reader's expectation for a formal meter, such as iambic pentameter.

Ghazal - an Eastern verse form consisting of successive couplets whose lines all end with the same refrain phrase (the qafia), just before which is placed the couplet's rhyming word (radif). The last couplet includes the name of the poet.

Haiku – a Japanese form that consists of three lines with five syllables in the first, seven syllables in the second, and five syllables in the third line. A traditional haiku is usually includes natural imagery and has a turn in the final line

Sestina - a poem consisting of six six-line stanzas and a three-line envoy, where the words ending the lines of the first stanza are repeated in a different order at the end of lines in each of the subsequent five stanzas and, two to a line, in the middle and at the end of the three lines in the closing envoy. The patterns of word-repetitions are as follows:

Sonnet – a 14 line poem, typically with a strict rhyme scheme depending on the type. The following are the most common types of sonnet:

o Shakespearean (English) - three quatrains and a concluding couplet, with the scheme abab cdcd efef gg. The final couplet is usually includes a turn. Typically written in blank verse.

o Italian – an octave (eight-line stanza rhyming abbaabba), and a sestet (six-line-stanza rhyming cddc ee),

o Petrarchan - an octave (eight-line stanza rhyming abbaabba), and a sestet (six-line-stanza rhyming cdcdcd or cdecde).

Villanelle - an Italian verse form consisting of five three-line stanzas (tercets) and a final quatrain, possessing only two rhymes, repeating the first and third lines of the first stanza alternately in the following stanzas, and combining those two refrain lines into the final couplet in the quatrain.

Metaphor – a comparison of two things that does not use like or as Extended Metaphor – a metaphor that is extended over the course of a stanza or an entire

poem. Meter - The rhythmical pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in verse. Meter is measured in “feet,” based on the type of meter, the most common are listed here (x = unstressed; / = stressed): Iamb (x /) as in delay Trochee (/ x) as in summer Anapest (x x /) as in interfere Dactyl (/ x x) as in faithfully Here is a poem to illustrate each one:

The iamb saunters through my book Trochees rush and tumble While the anapest runs like a hurrying brook Dactyls are stately and classical

Persona – a speaker created by the poet; similar to the use of character in fiction. Personification – the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form. Refrain - one or more lines repeated before or after the stanzas of a poem.

Rhyme - normally end-rhyme, that is, lines of verse characterized by the consonance of terminal words or syllables. Rhymed words conventionally share all sounds following the word's last stressed syllable. Thus "tenacity" and "mendacity" rhyme, but not "jaundice" and "John does," or "tomboy" and "calm bay." Rhyme Scheme – the pattern in which a rhyme occurs in a poem, which is marked with

lower case letters, when annotating a poem. Slant Rhyme or Half Rhyme – the use of two words that have similar sounds, but do not

quite rhyme, this is similar to assonance and consonance. Internal Rhyme - when words are rhymed within one line of poetry, rather than at the ends

of lines Simile – a comparison of two things that uses like or as Speaker – the voice used by the author in a poem. This is similar to a narrator in fiction, and it should not be assumed that the poet is the speaker—in other words, the poet may not be talking about her or himself. Stanza (Italian, ‘a stopping place’) - a group of verses separated from other such groups in a poem and often sharing a common rhyme scheme. Couplet – a two line stanza Tercet or Triplet – a three-line stanza Quatrain – a four-line stanza Quintet – a five-line stanza Sestet – a six-line stanza Septet – a seven-line stanza Octave – an eight-line stanza Syntax – the ordering of words into meaningful patterns. A poet can manipulate the syntax of a line to place emphasis on a word; this is especially apparent when a poet varies normal word order. Tone – the writer’s attitude toward the subject, the mood created by all the elements of the poem. Turn (or “volta” in Italian) - a rhetorical shift or dramatic change in thought and/or emotion.

Introduction to Poetry (1988)

I ask them to take a poem

and hold it up to the light

like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem

and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem’s room

and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski

across the surface of a poem

waving at the author’s name on the shore.

But all they want to do

is tie the poem to a chair with rope

and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose

to find out what it really means.

The Summer Day by Mary Oliver Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I mean- the one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down- who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don't know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

The Forgotten Dialect of the Heart

How astonishing it is that language can almost mean, and frightening that it does not quite. Love, we say, God, we say, Rome and Michiko, we write, and the words Get it wrong. We say bread and it means according to which nation. French has no word for home, and we have no word for strict pleasure. A people in northern India is dying out because their ancient tongue has no words for endearment. I dream of lost vocabularies that might express some of what we no longer can. Maybe the Etruscan texts would finally explain why the couples on their tombs are smiling. And maybe not. When the thousands of mysterious Sumerian tablets were translated, they seemed to be business records. But what if they are poems or psalms? My joy is the same as twelve Ethiopian goats standing silent in the morning light. O Lord, thou art slabs of salt and ingots of copper, as grand as ripe barley lithe under the wind’s labor. Her breasts are six white oxen loaded with bolts of long-fibered Egyptian cotton. My love is a hundred pitchers of honey. Shiploads of thuya are what my body wants to say to your body. Giraffes are this desire in the dark. Perhaps the spiral Minoan script is not a language but a map. What we feel most has no name but amber, archers, cinnamon, horses and birds.

September rain falls on the house.

In the failing light, the old grandmother

sits in the kitchen with the child

beside the Little Marvel Stove,

reading the jokes from the almanac,

laughing and talking to hide her tears.

She thinks that her equinoctial tears

and the rain that beats on the roof of the house

were both foretold by the almanac,

but only known to a grandmother.

The iron kettle sings on the stove.

She cuts some bread and says to the child,

It's time for tea now; but the child

is watching the teakettle's small hard tears

I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker,

And I have seen the eternal Footman hold my coat, and snicker,

And in short, I was afraid.

And would it have been worth it, after all,

After the cups, the marmalade, the tea,

Among the porcelain, among some talk of you and me,

Would it have been worth while,

To have bitten off the matter with a smile,

To have squeezed the universe into a ball

To roll it towards some overwhelming question,

To say: “I am Lazarus, come from the dead,

Come back to tell you all, I shall tell you all”—

To swell a progress, start a scene or two,

The art of losing isn’t hard to master; so many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster of lost door keys, the hour badly spent. The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother’s watch. And look! my last, or next-to-last, of three loved houses went. The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster, some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent. I miss them, but it wasn’t a disaster.

Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills We trekked and picked until the cans were full, Until the tinkling bottom had been covered With green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned Like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered With thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard's.

We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre. But when the bath was filled we found a fur, A rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache. The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush The fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour. I always felt like crying. It wasn't fair That all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot. Each year I hoped they'd keep, knew they would not.

I am wondering what became of all those tall abstractions

Truth cantering on a powerful horse,

Chastity, eyes downcast, fluttering with veils.

Each one was marble come to life, a thought in a coat,

Courtesy bowing with one hand always extended,

Villainy sharpening an instrument behind a wall,

Reason with her crown and Constancy alert behind a helm.

They are all retired now, consigned to a Florida for tropes.

Justice is there standing by an open refrigerator.

Valor lies in bed listening to the rain.

Even Death has nothing to do but mend his cloak and hood,

and all their props are locked away in a warehouse,

hourglasses, globes, blindfolds and shackles.

Even if you called them back, there are no places left

for them to go, no Garden of Mirth or Bower of Bliss.

The Valley of Forgiveness is lined with condominiums

and chain saws are howling in the Forest of Despair.

Here on the table near the window is a vase of peonies

and next to it black binoculars and a money clip,

exactly the kind of thing we now prefer,

objects that sit quietly on a line in lower case,

themselves and nothing more, a wheelbarrow,

an empty mailbox, a razor blade resting in a glass ashtray.

As for the others, the great ideas on horseback
