TUESDAY, APRIL 16 9:30 - 10:45 am and 11:00 am - 12:15 pm

TUESDAY, MARCH 5 9:30 - 10:45 am and 11:00 am - 12:15 pm

Nicholas Powers is a poet, journalist, activist, and professor. His published books include The Ground Below Zero and Theater of War. He has written for The Indypendent, Alternet and The Village Voice. Powers has spoken and read nationally at conferences and events, is full time faculty in the English Department at SUNY Old Westbury, and co-hosts the long running New York City College Poetry Slam at the Nuyorican Cafe. He was recently interviewed on segments for On the Hill with Erica Hall and on Anderson Cooper’s 360.

Brendan Fay is a human rights activist, writer, public speaker, and filmmaker, having led social justice campaigns for immigration reform, civil marriage, HIV/AIDS awareness, inclusive parades, police reform and human rights. He founded the Irish LGBT group Lavender and Green Alliance and co-founded Irish Aids Outreach (IAC). His publications include Finding Jesus on Christopher Street in Love, published in the Lambda literary award winning anthology, Love, Christopher Street: Reflections of New York City.

Catherine Young is an award-winning contemporary dancer and choreographer based in Ireland. She teaches dance and choreography at Limerick University and is founder, director, and choreographer for the Catherine Young Dance Company (CYD). Young melds activism with dance. Her recent productions, It Takes a Village and State of Exception, address immigration and the plight of refugees.

THE BORSCHT BELTMARISA SCHEINFELDTUESDAY, JANUARY 22 through FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22

Based on her widely acclaimed book, The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland, this traveling exhibition features Marisa Scheinfeld’s large-scale color photographs of the abandoned remains of once famous resort hotels of the Catskill Mountain region. Scheinfeld’s photographs have been exhibited widely, and her work has been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Slate Magazine, and American Photography. She is also an adjunct instructor at Westchester Community College.

DEEP SKINCYNTHIA LINMONDAY, MARCH 4 through FRIDAY, APRIL 12

This exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, and prints by Cynthia Lin that originate from images of skin. Ranging from up-close human surfaces to faraway planet topographies, the work deploys various “lenses” to see “factual“ digital scans re-interpreted through painting processes that engage material, gesture, and time. Each step accumulates

unpredictable events shaped by the personal experience of an Asian-American constructing her “in-between“ space within a global culture. Lin is a Guggenheim fellow, NYFA Finalist, and Associate Professor and Area Coordinator of Painting and Drawing at SUNY Purchase College.

STUDENT SHOWMONDAY, APRIL 29 through FRIDAY, MAY 3

This exhibition presents selected student works from Visual Arts curriculum classes. Drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, and digital media are featured.

Westchester Community College offers a number of academic programs in the arts. They include dance, drama, film, music (vocal, instrumental, computer-engineered) and visual/computer art classes. Smart Arts programming enriches the classes as

students are given opportunities to meet guest artists up close and personal, as well as participate in residency custom-designed outreach activities.

Into the SmartArtsNotables' Quotables & Me

This literary project is a collection from the contributing students, staff and faculty, undertaken by the Office of Cultural Affairs at Westchester Community College.

“He said, she said!” The dialogues project began with an archaeological dig for quoted statements made by famous people we admire and what they have said or written about the arts. In the effort to “mine” for pearls of wisdom and witticism, we became acutely aware that we should do more than know the words of our heroes, celebrities and celebrants. In an era of rampant social media and electronic communications galore, this project is an opportunity to get intimate and create a conversation between one’s identified notable(s) and his/her quote(s).

An invitation is being delivered for you to open the book, explore its pages, and seek out your favorite notable. Be inspired and form your own inner response to either the initial “found” quote, the contributor’s reaction, or BOTH! Perhaps you will discover a notable with whom you are unfamiliar, or those with whom you are but you are not familiar with the “found” quote(s). Or perhaps you have your own notable or quote not mentioned in this book. Whatever may be the case... Enjoy, Dig and Converse!

Proceeds from book and Kindle sales support student and community outreach activities. To purchase, go online at www.amazon.com

To purchase, go online at www.amazon.com

and search for: Into the SmartArts: Notables' Quotables & Me.

This is the third publication in the Into the SmartArts series. The first and second publications

can also be found on www.amazon.com in paperback, and the first in Kindle format as well.
