For residents o Northern Virginia, the year 2010will be one that we will never orget, i or no oth-er reason than we were buried under snow or aboutthe rst two months o it! And while we complainedabout the seemingly endless shoveling, I think manyo us were inwardly pleased. Not only did we securebragging rights or having survived the snowiest win-ter on record, but we also benetted rom a changeo pace where we could slow down a bit and be morereective about our lives.

Within our parish, that seems to have done manyo us good, because once the snows began melting, it

was as i the wheels engaged and we suddenly gainedtraction within several o Pohicks areas o ministry.

In terms o creating a saer and more welcomingphysical plant or our visitors, we accomplished severalgoals. o begin with, scores o us gathered over a driz-

zly weekend to pull up by hand every single brick inour courtyard. Having invested that sweat equity, we

went on to raise unds so that the proessionals couldcome in and lay a sure oundation, over which they setan attractive and tightly packed brick walkway.

Simultaneously, our Renovations Committee be-gan to execute our long-held plans to make our Com-mon Room and Annex not only more visually appeal-ing, but also acoustically hospitable. Tey also recentlycompleted repairs to the nursery and now have theirsights set on upgrading the Parish House electrical

system, ooring, signage, kitchen, storage space, and

Sunday school rooms. In two related projects, we are also engaged in

negotiations with the County Architectural ReviewBoard over plans to improve the handicap access intoour church, and to construct a sign that is more visibleto the thousands o cars on Richmond Highway pass-ing by each day.

Elsewhere, our Youth Minister, Rusty Booth, hasworked with several volunteers and donors to builda Youth Room in the lower trailer, until we can a-ord the construction o a permanent acility in theexpanded education wing envisioned in our MasterPlan. Tat room will open in January. In that same

vein, we are also exploring temporary solutions oexpanding parking in our lower lot and around thecemetery perimeter.

In another important area o ministry, as o No- vember, our Assistant, the Rev. Lyn Youll Marshaland her team o volunteers have now run the AlphaCourse three times, with the last oering beginningto attract participants outside the congregation. We

are looking orward to continuing this work o evan-gelism in the coming year, adding a Marriage Alphasegment beginning in January.

During 2010, we again sent two teams back toNew Orleans, bringing our total number o trips tothat beleaguered city to nine over the past ve yearsLikewise, our young people continued their ministryo summer mission trips, this time working with theneedy in central Pennsylvania.

With the return o Community o Hope ounding member Jennier Sassin, we also had a reinvigoration othat Pastoral Care group whose lay chaplains assist the clergy in that area o ministry while maintaining a personarule o lie based on the Benedictine model o spirituality. Teir work and prayers have touched many lives.

I could go on to list the wonderul contributions o our choirs, our Sunday school teachers and sta, our mens

and womens guilds, our prayer shawl knitters - just to name a ew. But I do not want to overly anticipate the manyindividual reports included in the rest o the annual report, which is available through the church ofce.

I will observe, however, that all o these aithul eorts seem to be ostering a divine synergy where the HolySpirit is increasingly attracting new amilies into our congregation, even as others rotate out into mission eldsbeyond our community. My hope is that as the BRAC realignment nally kicks in over the next two years, we willcontinue to build on this momentum and incorporate even more incoming residents into our Pohick amily.

In the meantime, I would like to oer a special thanks to all those who have been so aithul in their workthis past year: to Lyn, my partner in ministry, and to Daniel Cenci, our new seminarian, who has already becomesuch a wonderully vibrant presence at Pohick; to all our sta, especially to Pat Osisek who retired ater twenty-three years o aithul ministry, and to Mike Morgan, her successor, who brings with him a antastic dedication to

Pohicks mission; to the Wardens, Ofcers and Members o our Vestry who have put in countless volunteer hours, much o it behind the scenes; and to all o our many ministry leaders and workers who have done so much goodChristian work in their various elds o service. o all o you: your eorts are appreciated not only by me, but byall whose lives you have touched. And, I know they have been appreciated by God himsel.

We look orward to an exciting new year ahead o us, building on all the accomplishments o the past year andthose that have preceded it, while we seek to proclaim the Good News o Jesus Christ, to advance the role o theEpiscopal Church as an active participant in sharing the Gospel, and to create a nourishing Christian communityo worship where Christs love is experienced and taken beyond its walls.

    seniorWardensreportStew Remaly, Senior Warden

Tis will be my last report as the Senior Warden

and with that I would like to simply say thanks tothe Congregation, Vestry, clergy, sta, and most o allGod or allowing me to serve you. I thank you or

your patience, support, guidance, riendship, and loveas I served alongside a superb Vestry team. I also wantto say congratulations to our new Vestry membersMike Elston, om Rivenbark, om Buckner, MichelleBooth, Kristina Myers, and Jonathon Cooke. Pleaseknow that I and all past Vestry members will be thereto help as you begin your term. You are wonderul ser-

vants o God who are shining examples o steward-

ship, caring, and aith.Vestry Meeting: Welcomed the new Vestry members elected at

the Annual Meeting. Elected ofcers or 2011: Neil Sunderland, Sr.

Warden; Mike Elston, Jr. Warden; Roberta Fede, reasurer; and Chris Brown, Register.

Unanimously approved the 2011 Budget as rec-ommended by the Finance Committee. It projects

General Income o $638,050 and a decit o $6,733Tis is a signicantly smaller decit than those pro-jected in previous years.

Received an update on the 2011 Pledge DriveTe number o pledges received, total amount pledged

and average amount pledged all are running above lastyears levels. Te Vestry thanks those who made a -nancial commitment to support the work o the Par-ish, and urges those who have not submitted pledges togive prayerul consideration and submit the pledge.

Approved the reasurers Report. Plate andpledge income or November and year-to-date haveallen below historic ranges. Pohick is acing a verysignicant decit or the year unless this trend is re-

versed. Parishioners are urged to ulll their pledgesor 2010, and prayerully consider the Parishs nan-

cial needs at this Advent and Christmas season. Ex-penses are generally running as projected, and therehave been no signicant outstanding expenses.

Reviewed the output rom the Parish Forum onimproving handicapped access, and discussed the nextsteps. Te Vestry consensus is the ocus should be onthe needs o the handicapped. A second Forum will bescheduled when more inormation is available.

Received an update on the Cemetery.

As the new year begins, let us take a moment toreview some o the Outreach activities o 2010. Mission rips: Pohick elded two adult teams to

work in New Orleans with the ongoing rebuild cam-paigns. As the national ocus moves away rom theGul Coast, there is an ongoing opportunity to work

with amilies and individuals in that area with the goalo getting them home. During July, the youth groupparticipated in a mission trip to Pennsylvania, which

impacted the lives o several residents. For those or-tunate enough to participate in the Mission rips -

youth or adult - individual change is experienced. Itis impossible to engage in one o these events withouthaving perspectives altered in a most positive way. Lorton Community Action Center: PohickChurch supports LCAC in a variety o ways duringthe course o the year. LCAC is the local social serviceagency that provides support to the community whoare in need o help.

Te Pohick congregation regularly supplies ood

to the LCAC ood bank. Te number o individualsand amilies with children needing this support hasgrown dramatically during the last three years. Pohickhas provided thousands o pounds o ood in 2010. Asimple as it sounds, bringing in a can o vegetables ora box o cereal each week, can impact people in needin the community.

In August, there was a school supply collectionto help the children who are LCAC clients begin the

school year with new notebooks, pencils, backpackspaper, etc.

In November, Pohick hosted the annual Tanks-giving Food Drive to provide healthy ood itemsto LCAC so that their client amilies could enjoy a

Tanksgiving meal.In December, the elves were busy collecting gits

or children and hosting a Breakast with Santa orLCAC clients. Breakast with Santa grew rom 40

Te children then participated in a crat activity.

Te git collection or children and ood git cardsor Christmas was taken by caravan to LCAC on De-cember 18. Pohick provided over 200 gits that de-lighted the children on Christmas morning. New Hope Housing: New Hope Housing is theshelter provider or the homeless in the community.During 2010, NHH expanded their responsibilities toinclude the shelters in Alexandria. For the unexpectedneeds during the 2010 blizzards, NHH received ac-knowledgement rom the Virginia State Legislature.

Nine times a year, Pohick provides lunches or a

week or New Hope. Groceries were purchased thatare used to provide the meals or the residents o theirKennedy Shelter. During the summer, New HopeHousing provided another opportunity to supportthese amilies with a picnic. During December, Po-hick hosts the annual Christmas party or the resi-dents o the Kennedy Shelter, Mondloch House, andthe clients who are in transitional housing. Tis yearsevent was a spectacular success due to the tremendoussupport received rom the members o Pohick. Te at-tendance was in record numbers this year. Over 100guests participated in the event. All were provided

with a sumptuous meal, music, and dance providedby some o the talented members o the congrega-tion. Te children all received a git rom Santa, and ashop was set up in the classrooms so that the adultscould select items or themselves and their amilies.Parishioners generously provided items such as coats, clothing, and toiletries. Te Christmas Dinner eventis successul because o all the volunteers that contrib-ute their time and talent. Tanks to ALL who set up,

cooked, served, cleaned up, sang, danced, and providedgits. Arican eam Ministries: Each spring, Pohicksupports the Arican eam Ministries through thesale o jewelry, musical instruments, and carvings. Teunds raised through this sale support a variety o e-orts, which include AIDS education and treatment,micro-industry development, and the support o min-istry.

Many groups within the Church provide supportthat contributes to the success o the outreach events,

Outreach: continued rom page 4and they sponsor additional outreach activities includ-ing ood support to amilies in transition, the GloriesHappy Hats project, and the Jackson Feild Homeamong others. Tese groups include the Brotherhood

o Saint Andrew, the Martha Guild, and the Ann Ma-son Guild. Additionally, each o these organizationshas provided nancial support or the drives or schoosupplies, ood, and gits. Te Pohick Pickers regularlysupport Outreach in the community by participatingat events including the picnic or the shelter, the an-nual Country Fair, and the Christmas party.

As 2011 begins, the opportunities to do the workHe has given us to do are many. Tanks to all or thesupport that has been shown or Outreach programsEveryone is encouraged to participate in the coming

Tis monthly report is part o the Vestrys ongoing eortto inorm and update the Parish about the ongoing contro-

versies within Te Episcopal Church (EC) and the An-glican Communion. Tese controversies largely involve theblessing o same-gender unions, ordination o non-celibatehomosexuals, interpretation o Scripture, and breakdowno traditional boundary lines between Provinces.

A Fairax County judge has set an April trial dateor the next stage o the Virginia Property Cases, inthe process turning down the CANA Congregationsrequest or a jury trial. Across the pond, the GeneralSynod o the Church o England voted late in Novem-ber to continue the process toward adopting the Angli-

can Covenant, sending the document to its dioceses orconsideration. But in the same week, the GAFCONprovinces o the Global South rejected it as atallyawed.

Te Virginia Property Cases represent an eort by anumber o parishes in Northern Virginia to claim theirproperty as they leave the Diocese o Virginia and align with other provinces o the Anglican Communion.Tey tried to do so using a Civil War era law known asthe Division Statute, or 57-9 (so called because it isitle 59, Paragraph 9 o the Code o Virginia). Te Vir-

ginia Supreme Court in June agreed there had been adivision in Te Episcopal Church and Diocese o Vir-ginia, but said that the departing churches had joinedthe Convocation o Anglicans in North America, orCANA, and it is branch o the Province o Nigeria, not a branch o the Diocese o Virginia. It orderedthe Circuit Court to dismiss the CANA Congrega-tions petitions to take control o their property underthe Division Statute, and conduct urther proceedingson the dispute consistent with the views expressed inthis opinion.

Circuit Court Judge Randy Bellows has now April25 as the date or the next phase o the trial. Te CANACongregations had asked or a jury trial. Te Dioceseo Virginia countered that state law does not stipulatejury trials in these cases, and that in any event the timeto ask or one was long past. Judge Bellows agreed withthe Diocese, and will hear the case without a jury. Healso rejected eorts by one parish, Church o our Saviorin Oatlands, to separate itsel rom the other cases.

A group associated with those CANA Congrega-tions has now launched a blog called Finding Com-

mon Ground in Common Prayer, which describesitsel as attempting to nd a win-win settlement. It

doesnt detail what that would be, but calls or negotia-tions about the property rather than ongoing litigationIt cites various calls rom Archbishop Williams andothers or an end to litigation, notes the costs to bothsides, and oers a list o reasons why a win-win solu-tion is better. Critics quickly noted that negotiationo a win-win solution seems impossible so long as thepeople who have let EC hold the property, negotiat-ing a sharing o their property as i it were indeed theirsto share. Are the communities actually controlling theproperty willing to take a neutral stance on their right

to the property, such that they negotiate rom the sameplace as the continuing EC congregations and theDiocese? Will they put the property in neutral handsnow in order to acilitate a negotiated settlement?

    * * *In England, the General Synod o the Church o

England overwhelmingly voted late in November tosend the proposed Anglican Covenant to its diocesesor consideration.

Te Anglican Covenant is an eort to spell outhe belies and principles Anglicans hold in common

and lay out ways to resolve disputes among churches othe Communion. It was rst proposed by the Wind-sor Report in 2004. Te Archbishop o Canterbury hasdescribed it as setting out the basis on which the An-glican amily works and prays and lives and hopes. Tebulk o the text identies what we hold in common, theground on which we stand as Anglicans.

It went through several drats over the last ewyears beore being sent to the provinces or their con-sideration late in 2009.

Most o those whove studied the drat generally ac-

cept the statements o common belie. But many criti-cize the sections on discipline and sanctions, with somecalling them a radical attempt to centralize authority inthe name o orthodoxy, while others criticize them asbeing toothless and legalistic.

eral Synod voted by wide margins to continue theadoption process. Te move was pushed strongly by

the Archbishop, who told the synod, Te drit o thecovenant has been towards...ways with which we can,in some sense, act in coherence together or the sakeo Gods mission. He added, I hear and partly un-derstand the anxieties about legislating amily relations[but] I do want to resist very strongly that the covenantcreates a central authority.

But i getting the Church o England to move theprocess orward was a signicant victory or Archbish-op Williams, his hopes o using the Covenant as a wayto bridge the dierences within the Anglican Commu-

nion suered a serious and potentially atal blow whenGAFCON (the Global Anglican Futures Conerencesaid it could no longer support it. A statement issued bythe GAFCON Primates Council said we are nowentering a new era or the Anglican Communion. Newways o living out our common lie are emerging as oldstructures are proven to be ineective in conrontingthe challenges o living in a pluralistic global commu-nityWhile we acknowledge that the eorts to healour brokenness through the introduction o an Angli-can Covenant were well intentioned we have come to

the conclusion the current text is atally awed and sosupport or this initiative is no longer appropriate.

Te group also said they would not attend the nextPrimates Meeting, to be held in Ireland in January.

Te statement was signed the primates o six Aricaprovinces, plus Bishop Robert Duncan, who heads theAnglican Church in North America that is attempt-ing to establish itsel as a replacement province or TeEpiscopal Church and Church o Canada within theAnglican Communion. It was adopted on October 7,but not made public until Archbishop Williams had

invested considerable eort in persuading his Synodto endorse sending it to the dioceses. Tey denied thetiming was an attempt to embarrass him.

Meanwhile, a new group rom Canada, England,New Zealand and the United States launched a web-site called No Anglican Covenant to gather opposi-tion rom those who might be said to have a liberalperspective. Tey say, We believe that this covenantis ill-conceived. In response to the reputed crisis inthe Communion, draters o the covenant have a- voured coercion over the hard work o reconciliation.

Te covenant seeks to narrow the range o acceptablebelie within Anglicanism and to prevent urther de- velopment o Anglican thought. We believe in anAnglicanism based on a shared heritage o worshipnot on a set o doctrines to which all must subscribeOur understanding o Anglicanism leads us to view thecovenant as prooundly un-Anglican.

Te 2009 General Convention o Te EpiscopalChurch approved a resolution urging congregations tostudy and discuss the covenant over the next two yearsand report back to the Executive Council, leading up topossible action by the General Convention in 2012.

In June, the Anglican Church o Mexico becamethe rst province ormally to adopt the Covenant. In other recent developments:

Te Diocese o Pennsylvania continues to be

locked in a dispute with its bishop, Charles BennisonBut the issue is dierent rom those that have splitothers dioceses. Bp. Bennison had been convicted ocovering up his brothers abuse o a teenage girl yearsago, but a church appeals court overturned the convic-tion, saying the statute o limitations had passed. Hereturned to ofce ater the appeals court victory Manyin the diocese want him to leave; 73% o delegates ata recent diocesan convention called or him to resignand the Standing Committee recently met with Pre-siding Bishop Katherine Jeerts Schori and key advi-

sors to seek their wisdom and advice. Te president o the World Lutheran Federationhas proposed that the Lutheran and Roman Catho-lic churches issue a common statement on eucharistichospitality to mark the 500th anniversary o the Prot-estant Reormation in 2017. Eucharistic hospitalitymeans that Lutherans and Roman Catholics would beable to receive Communion at each others EucharistsCatholic doctrine currently orbids such bilateral ac-ceptance; the Second Vatican Council said Protestantsdid not keep the genuine and integral substance o the

    eucharistic mystery.

It is important to remember that despite all these controversies, thework o the Church - globally, nationally, and locally - goes on In recent months, 20 bags o backpacks and school supplies werprovided to the Lorton Community Action Center, and more than200 pounds o ood were contributed to LCAC. Te ninth missiongroup rom Pohick journeyed to New Orleans in mid-October. Athe Rector has said, we will continue to go back as long as we areable and as long as the need to continues to be so great. Te Carpen-

ter rom Nazareth, we eel, would not have it any other way.

    seasonal affeCtiVe disorders

Many people nd that in the winter months, theymay tend to eat and sleep slightly more. Some maynd it hard to cope with the colder weather, darkmornings, and shorter days. What many do not real-ize, this is a common disorder called Seasonal Aec-tive Disorder (SAD).

For some people, the symptoms can be severeenough to disrupt their lives and cause considerabledistress. Te specic cause o SAD remains unknown. It is likely, as with many mental health conditions, that

genetics, age, and perhaps the bodys natural chemicalmakeup all play a role in developing the condition.

A ew specic actors that may come into play in-clude:

Biological clock or circadian rhythm. Te re-duced level o sunlight in all and winter may disruptthe bodys internal clock, which lets the body know

when to sleep or to be awake. Tis disruption o thecircadian rhythm may lead to eelings o depression.

Melatonin levels. Te change in season can dis-rupt the balance o the natural hormone melatonin,

which plays a role in sleep patterns and mood. Serotonin levels. A drop in serotonin, a brain

chemical (neurotransmitter) that aects mood, mightplay a role in SAD. Reduced sunlight can cause a dropin serotonin, perhaps leading to depression.

Recognize the SymptomsSeasonal Aective Disorder can present many com-mons symptoms:

    Problems completingschool work

Lack o interest so-cializing with riends Increased tendencies

to sleep, even during thedaytime hours, or tendency

to sleep longer Increased cravings or carbohydrates that tend to

cause weight gain Increased levels o irritability and behavior prob-

lemsake the signs and symptoms o Seasonal Aec-

tive Disorder seriously. As with other types o depres-sion, SAD can worsen, and lead to problems i it is nottreated. Some problems can include:

Suicidal thoughts or behavior Social withdrawal

School or work problems Substance abuseo reduce possibilities o SAD, make the house

sunnier and brighter. Open the blinds and drapes. Besure to also trim treebranches that may beblocking sunlight. Sitcloser to bright win-dows while at home orin the ofce.

    Get outside. ake a

long walk, eat lunch ata nearby park, or simplysit on a bench and soakup the sun. Even on cold or cloudy days, outdoor lightcan help. Exercise regularly. Physical exercise helpsrelieve stress and anxiety - both o which can increaseSAD symptoms.

Happy New Year!Glory to God in highest heaven,

    Who unto man His Son hath given;

While angels sing with tender mirth,

A glad new year to all the earth.

    Martin Luther

We will open the book. Its pages are blank.

We are going to put words on them ourselves.

The book is called Opportunity and

its first chapter is New Years Day.
