Definition of POINTILLISM :

the theory or practice in art of

applying small strokes or dots

of colour to a surface so that

from a distance they blend

together ...

WHAT IS

POINTILLISM?

Page 3: Pointilism

WHEN DID IT

START?Pointillism, also known as

Neo-Impressionism, started in

the 19th Century.

Georges Seurat was perhaps

one of the most famous artists

within this movement.

Page 4: Pointilism

The Pointillism technique

relies on the ability of the

eye and mind of the

viewer to blend the

colour spots into a fuller

range of tones.

Page 5: Pointilism

The technique involves layering

different coloured dots on top of each

other. When seen from far away, it’s like

an optical illusion: dots blend together

and create a new colour. A simple

example of this would be dots of red

and yellow, which would appear as

orange from far away.

GEORGES

SEURAT

Georges Seurat (December 2, 1859 - March

29, 1891) was a French painter and

draftsman. His large and most famous

painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of

La Grande Jatte, altered the direction of

modern art by initiating Neo-impressionism,

and is one of the icons of 19th century

painting.

Magazines

combine small

dots made up of

primary colours

Magenta, Cyan

and Yellow.

The method used

for creating an

image in a

magazine is

called OPTICAL

MIXING.A computer

screen is made

up of PICTURE

ELEMENTS or

PIXELS. Each

pixel has a red,

green, and blue

element that can

be controlled to

produce the

desired colour.
