POLECATS TEAM PRESENTATION

MECHANICAL SECTION.

Nathan Edge, 13/06/2011POLECATS TEAM PRESENTATION

INTRODUCTION: TEAM MEMBERSTeam leader: Nathan Edge, 2nd year Mechanical Engineer @ Edinburgh University.Other members: Jonathan Raines, 1st year Mechanical Engineer at Bristol,Ben Couchman, 3rd year Mechanical Engineer at Cambridge (currently at MIT)Assisted by Zoe Versey, the Systems team leader.OUR JOB...Organisation of the individual experimental components within the module.Design of CAD models (i.e. 3D software models) for the apparatus and the module.Fulfilment of the thermodynamic requirements of the project (as in the REXUS user manual).Derivation of the final experiment specifications, including final mass and mass moment of inertia, to the required detail. (e.g.: mass 0.5kg, each moment of inertia 0.1 kgm^2)

Heres one I made earlier...WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR?Organisation of the team, and getting everybody familiar with the REXUS user manual.Research into thermodynamic requirements of the experiment.Research into possible insulating materials (on the REXUS wiki...)

WHAT HAVE WE DONE (contd)Initial design on the outer module, which will house the experiment (pretty arbitrary... Eurolaunch provides the CAD model for selected experiments anyway)Discussions regarding which CAD program should be used: this hinges on either AutoCAD or Inventor, both of which are free for students. SHORT-TERM PLANSDecide on single CAD program, to be used throughout the whole project (this will be decided at camp). Allocate CAD responsibility within the team (decided at camp/within the following week).Decide on how the module will be vented.

MID-TERM PLANSContinue research on insulation/materials.Create a suitable hatch design, using the below image as a template.

MID-TERM PLANS (contd)Liase with the other team members, for the placement of individual components-for example, the power source, the transmitter, etc.It is extremely important that we do this soon, just to give us some breathing space later on in the project.LONG-TERM PLANSBegin budgetary observations, and look for sponsors/manufacturers.Begin calculation of specifications for the experiment.Begin testing of the experiment, as mentioned in the user manual. Not too much to worry about now... But it is important that we begin to think about this.

FINALE...Thank you very much for your attention....Were really excited to be working with all of you...Please remind me of anything Ive forgotten...Any questions?
