1 POLGOOTH TIMES Summer 2009 108 Editorial I wish to start my editorial with apologies regarding the poor quality of last quarter’s magazine and further apologies to some of our advertisers as the adverts seemed to vary in quality. This issue should, hopefully, show some improvement. As readers are aware we are using new printers and although we have updated our production methods they are not yet one hundred percent compatible with our printer’s system so please bear with us, we will get there eventually!! Another major change is the way the magazine is compiled and I would like to thank all the compilers, past and present, for their support over the years and making themselves available should they be needed again, without them the magazine would never have been put together. 2 Our photograph on the front cover is Polgooth’s Keep Fit Group, as you can see we are a varied lot!! The group is struggling to find new members and would welcome anyone interested in joining us when we resume in September. It is only 45 minutes on a Monday evening commencing at 7 p.m.(term time only) and costs £1 per session. It would be a great pity if the group had to fold as there are now only 3 adult groups in the village – (Polgooth Ladies, which is thriving, Polgooth Players who usually need new members and the keep fit group). For further details please contact the Editor on 68759. Posh sports gear and a high level of fitness are not required just a sense of humour and an enjoyment of music and movement. Just come along for a look if you are unsure and you will be sure of a warm welcome. Following on from my last editorial I am typing this in a heat wave – long may it last. The date for articles to be included in the next issue No 109 is 9 th October 2009 which means by then, we will be thinking of the dreaded Christmas shopping!! Can you be a charity champion? A charity is looking for “champions” from our village - Are you retired, a student, working part-time or simply wishing to support a local cause. Cornwall Hospice Care, which runs Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St. Austell and St. Julia’s Hospice in Hayle, would like to hear from anyone who can spare a few hours a month to act as a representative for the charity. It can be anything from putting up posters on community notice boards and in village shops; to attending cheque presentations locally; attending events or delivering and picking up collection tins. It costs more than £5 million annually – that’s £11 a minute - to run the charity, which gives specialist care to many hundreds of patients who have a life limiting illness and supports their carers and loved ones. If you are able to help the charity or would like to know more please call Sarah on 01726 874516 or Karen/Clare on 01726 66869. Thank you.

MESSY CHURCH comes to POLGOOTH

Our celebration of Village Life this year took a different form. It was a glorious Sunday morning in June, and the church occupied space in the Playing Field adjacent to the church. It was perfect for holding an open air service. As requested, many who came brought seeds and pictures for display; along with helmets (cycle helmets in the main) and weaponry to interact with the story of David and Goliath; all of which helped to build on the theme of ‘Faith as small as a Mustard?’ -- with god’s help, -- ‘moves mountains.’ None of us were allowed to remain a spectator throughout and all enjoyed the interactivity that followed. We listened to two seeds exchanging their respective philosophies of life underground, and later all were invited to plant a prayer seed in a pot wit ha marker provided on which to write anything that may appear as a ‘mountain’ or personal ‘giant ‘ in our lives. Finally, all were encouraged to pray as the seed grows, to the God who can move and remove all that is in danger of overpowering us. It was a meaningful act of worship, appreciated by all ages present. Most stayed and enjoyed a picnic lunch before dispersing. A definite ‘must do it again’ event. Averlea Residential Home

Well done to Nicola for completing her level 3 NVQ. Nicola has been with Averlea for approximately 4 years and has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in the care profession, she has now received a promotion to Senior Care Assistant. Congratulations to Paul on reaching his fiftieth birthday recently, we wish him all the best and may he see many more birthdays. Also a big good luck to Debbie Osborne who is soon to be married to Mr Andy Martin from St Blazey. From all the staff and residents at Averlea-a huge congratulations and all the best for the future to you both. Averlea would also like to give a big warm welcome to Ted Reed, Marian Turner, Kathleen Barker and Inez Odgers, all new residents at Averlea. Also, Tigger - Averlea’s resident cat has had 4 little bundles of fluff. All the kittens have homes to go to and Mum is doing fine. Mrs Edna Roberts (11/12/1919 - 29/06/2009) Unfortunately Monday 29 June saw the sad passing of Mrs Edna Roberts, she had been at Averlea for just over 2 years and had become very dear to us all. Edna originally came from Yorkshire where she was married to Harold until 1974. Edna enjoyed listening to brass bands of which she was once a secretary. She also enjoyed joining in with everyone singing old war time songs and she helped the war effort by working on Lancaster Bombers. Miss Daphne Blight (19/02/1923 - 13/06/2009) Sadly Miss Daphne Blight passed away in hospital on Saturday 13 June. Daphne spent her younger years in the forces before joining the nursing profession, later in her career she joined Social Services. Dogs were the passion of Daphne’s life, she also enjoyed watching sport on the television and always kept up with the latest news.

Mrs Claire Olgard (15/05/1919 - 05/07/2009) Sunday 5 July saw the sad passing of Mrs Claire Olgard. Claire has been at Averlea since October 2007, in that time she has made a lot of friends. She enjoyed singing along with other residents, particularly old war time songs. Claire was known for having an outgoing and very likeable character, because of this amongst other things she will be greatly missed by all her friends at Averlea. Miss Marjorie Clemo (01/12/1916 - 14/04/2009) Marjorie Clemo will be sadly missed by all at Averlea and all who knew her. Marjorie lived in the village of Polgooth all her life, she was never married and never had children although she treated her nephews Bernard and Barry as her own. After working at Devoran Port operating a machine making parts for boats, Marjorie joined the fashion trade, where she worked as a buyer, travelling to London to buy stock for the shop she worked for. At different times, Marjorie worked for both Sydney Grose and Broads, both in St Austell.

It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be “What is hell?” Come early and listen to our choir practice. The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday evening. Potluck supper Sunday at 5.00pm - prayer and medication to follow.

FRIDAY CLUB

This term, because of the lovely weather, we have been able to use the playing field to play games but when we have been indoors we have been making necklaces, and decorating plastic jars for the sweet stall at the fete. Next term we will be joined by 6 new children and we still have room for more so please contact Pam Hitchens telephone 72790 if you are interested in securing a place for your child.

POLGOOTH LADIES GROUP

The Ladies Group is flourishing and we are still having new members, although not all from the village. In June we had our antiques valued and July saw the members in my garden for our annual fish and chip supper. In August we all have a rest but come the last Tuesday in September we resume for an eagerly awaited visit to The Merlin Centre in Hewas Water and in October a lesson in cake decorating. All new members are welcome. Please contact Pam Hitchens 72790 for further details.

Polgooth Village Hall

There has been a leak in the water supply pipe to the Village Hall for some time now. The pipe runs under the Polmewan Flats and across the grass area and the road between the Village Hall and the flats – in other words – through Ocean Housing property. We have had the leak repaired on at least three occasions and each time it has started leaking again. At our last meeting we decided to investigate the cost of having a completely new supply pipe laid and the water main connected to it in the road outside the Hall. Mr Ken Johnson of Pipeworx – one of South West Water’s approved contractors – has visited the site and given a price to our Treasurer, Jonathan Childs. We are still waiting for a price from S.W.Water for tapping into their main in the road. If these prices are acceptable, then, hopefully by the time you read this, the job will be done. Another expense the Hall will have to bear is the cost of a new fridge. The existing one was given to the Village Hall by the last caretaker, Graham Dann. The St Mewan Under-Fives Playgroup has found that this fridge does not keep the contents down to the required level, namely 5 degrees Celcius. The Group has to record the temperature daily as part of its Health and Safety routines. We have located a suitable model from the Argos catalogue and this will be installed as soon as possible. We have accumulated enough funds to pay for these two items. Martin Barnes. Polgooth Village Hall Secretary and Acting Chairman. 01726 63277.

Nature’s Reign

Rain - Rain - What again? I hear it on my window pane. But farmers, gardeners, other growers, Need it for their fruit and flowers. Sometimes, its like God’s gift from heaven, But by and large, it works out even. Think of all the Summer Fairs, Fetes and flower shows offering wares. And then a downpour, Oh! So sudden, Flooded ground, displays all sodden, A rush to cover up the spread, Or a dash to the marquee instead. For special folk rain is disaster. They lean against the church pilaster, The bride and groom and bridesmaids laugh, They’re waiting for their photograph, Instead they get a heavy shower, They’ll have to try a later hour. But when one thinks of months of drought In countries that are oft without, Our trials are lesser when compared, We should thank God when we are spared. As a child I used to say “ Rain, rain, go away, come again another day.” Molly Thorpe January 2009

A DREAM FULFILLED cont..... A better life.... I soon realised that achieving my ultimate goal in Ghana was going to be more of a challenge than I originally thought. What is a better life anyway? So many things affect our opinion on what can make a better life; our upbringing, life experiences,

culture and religion. My opinion on this now, is quite different to what it was before I went to Ghana! My ideas of how I could change lives and improve health care were very naive due to never having had an experience of a developing third World Country. Before going to Ghana I didn’t really know how I was going to be able to help, especially in the healthcare setting. I had no idea how advanced the hospitals and clinics were, so I just had to wait and see when I got there. I was first sent to work in The Miracle Life Clinic which is a private clinic in Ho. Ghana, like most other Countries in the World, doesn’t have a National Health Service so even though the Hospitals are Government owned, everybody still has to pay for their treatments. The differences with the Private Clinics are that treatments are more expensive so obviously this is where the more wealthy people go. The Miracle Life Clinic has an outpatients department and a couple wards for inpatients as well. I spent my time there working in the outpatients department checking everyone’s vital signs after they had booked in. This involved checking blood pressure, pulse and temperature, it’s similar to when we triage patients in this country, and it enables us to prioritise how quickly everyone gets seen by a Doctor. My first challenge in the Clinic I had to overcome was pronouncing people’s names when I called them up to check their vital signs! The language for this region in Ghana is Ewe so everyone had Ewe surnames; although it was made slightly easier

by the fact most people had English Christian names. My second and hardest challenge I had at the clinic was to continue checking vital signs even though I knew the equipment used i.e. thermometer and blood pressure cuff, wasn’t being cleaned adequately enough between patients. The only “cleaning agent” used was water. I thought about adding soap to the water which of course we know makes cleaning much more effective but the only soap they had were bars of soap, no washing up liquid and no liquid hand soap. There was one thing I came across regarding infection control which was promising, anyone who presented with a skin condition either wouldn’t have their blood pressure taken or if necessary it would be done with the cuff placed over the top of clothing, just in case the condition was infectious. Even though my experience in the Miracle Life Clinic wasn’t very exciting due to the fact I was doing the same thing everyday all day, I still cherish the experience I had there. It was interesting being able to compare the running of a private clinic with a Government Hospital. Experiencing a small Government Hospital was the next stage of my time in Ghana and probably the most valuable experience of all. This is when my ideas and opinion of what makes a better life had to change.....

PYE Club/ Drop-in

A very faithful small group of young people are about to have their

summer break.

Since September they have been meeting in the Church and have

enjoyed many Thursday evenings doing things that range from ball

games and crafts to discussions and projects.

This term they have undertaken to refurbish the tables and

benches in the Goffin by cleaning and re-staining them. Don’t they

look good? They were particularly interested in one engraving on a

picnic table, when told the story behind it they decided to preserve

it. It’s a small memorial to a young man who grew up in our village and reads ‘ RIP Dom We ♥ you’.

For 4 or 5 young people of 11/12, this activity was a first and needs

to be congratulated, so this is a big thank you to Matt, Connor,

Gracie, Alice and later some help from newcomers Kate and Kadie.

Well done.

The group will return in September to continue in the way they

have begun and await new challenges.

Anyone who is 11 or nearly 11 is very welcome. There is a small

charge of £1 to help fund the club and maintain the equipment if a

young person visits for the duration of the evening, which is from

6.30 to 8.00pm (time may be extended a little if preferred after

discussion.)

(contact Jeanette 01726 75362 for update)

During these last few months we have been scrubbing the

wall and painting it. The scrubbing was hard work but it was

worth the fun of painting it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I

think every one else did too. I think it looks much cleaner

now and I hope everyone likes it too.

Bygone Times

This letter was received recently from Pat Merrifield (nee Jones), with permission for it to go in the Polgooth Times. There maybe still some Polgooth folk who remember me and my family growing up in the village, and can recall some of the memories I am about to share. I vividly remember the flower shows, pantomimes and carnivals; the August bank holidays when families piled into Denis Mays’ and Hawkes’ lorries and journeyed to Pentewan beach. I still remember us singing in the back of the lorry while the lightning flashed and the rain poured down. We had Chapel Anniversaries and Sunday school outings to places like Looe and Newquay. There used to be a library at the top of the hill, the road started to the left of the post office up to the Trelowth road junction. This was used for sunshine corner and we were Jesus sunbeams. Polgooth was oozing with community living. All the pantomime costumes were made in the weekly sewing classes, and the wonderful scenery was painted by a village man whose name escapes me. There was no television so the whole village became involved in the production. There were tiny fairies between 5 and 11, then the senior girls dance and singing group and finally the adult cast. Pam Hitchens was one of the main actors. I can remember her in Dick Whittington playing the cook beside my dad who was idle Jack My sister Valerie is holding some old photos of Polgooth pantomimes which I will try and get copied for people to see. Thank you Polgooth for giving me such happy memories. Pat Merrifield

St Mewan under fives Playgroup

We have had a wonderful term with visits to the Toy Library bringing us a whole new experience of toys including huge Lego building blocks and soft play construction blocks. The children have been discovering about different countries this half term and we will be following a ‘Food’ theme in September exploring different mealtimes and foods, and encouraging healthy eating. On a quite wet and windy afternoon on June 17th we held a sponsored toddle at St Mewan School playing field where the playgroup and Baby and toddler group children helped raise money for Banardos, receiving medals for taking part. The staff, parents and carers made cakes and Dawn and David from Polgooth Post Office and Village Stores kindly donated some cakes that we also sold on the day, in total we raising £55 towards Playgroup funds. Thanks you to everyone who took part and special thanks to St Mewan School for allowing us to use the field. We wish the very best of luck to the 19 children that will be leaving us at the end of term, seventeen of whom will be starting their exciting new adventure in Reception class at St Mewan School in September. We hope that you have had as much fun as we have and we will miss you all very much. A big thank you to Vicki who has been leading our baby and toddler group sessions for four years now, she has decided to step down from the role and we are in discussions at the moment to run that group from September. We will have everything confirmed and in place by the start of the new term and we will advertise the session times in Polgooth Village Stores. If you would like any information please feel free to phone us, we will be available to speak to you from the beginning of term- September 3rd. We are looking forward to meeting all of the new children starting with us in September and invite anyone to contact us who would like to join us. We currently have some spaces available for 2+ years children and our sessions run twice daily, mornings 9.00am- 11.45am and afternoons 1.00pm - 3.45pm. You are welcome to arrange a taster session to enable you to see how the sessions run, watch your child play and ask any questions that you may have and we can introduce ourselves too. Just contact us on 01726 76001, we will be happy to help. Cathy, Corrin and Kate Play leaders at St Mewan under fives

Forgetter be forgotten

My forgetter’s getting better,

But my rememberer is broke

To you that may seem funny

But to me, that is no joke.

For when I’m ‘here’ I’m wondering

If I really should be ‘ there’

And when I try to think it through,

I haven’t got a prayer!

Oft times I walk into the room,

Say ‘ what am I here for?’

I wrack my brain, but all in vain!

A zero, is my score.

At times I put something away

Where it is safe, but, Gee!

The person it is safest from

Is generally, me!

When shopping I may someone,

Say ‘Hi’ and have a chat,

Then, when the person walks away

I ask myself, ‘Who the hell was that?’

Yes, my forgetter’s getting better

While my rememberer is broke,

And it’s driving me plumb crazy

And that isn’t any joke.

A female Perspective

I recently went into hospital for an operation being told I would most probably be able to go home on the same day though advised that an overnight bag would be prudent. On arriving at the day ward I received equally convincing information that “I would” and “would not” be going home at the end of the day. After much paperwork, form filling etc I eventually reach the outer regions of the operating theatre where we wait for about 10 minutes. On first inspection I thought I had found myself in someone’s store room with various items of equipment, trolleys etc scattered about. The wall facing me was, I suspect, an attempt to cheer this dreary place by depicting a sea scene looking every bit as though it had been painted by a 5 year old and judging by its sad condition was created some years earlier. There were several people in this ‘store room’ all dressed in operating uniforms, not one said ‘hello’ or acknowledges my presence. Still as a mere patient I obviously do not come into the considerations of such lofty individuals. It was very cold and huddling in my cotton blanket I was far from reassured about the journey I was about to take. Relief at last as a gentleman appears from down a corridor and greets me, so I assume he has some connection with the team who are about to cut me open. Thank goodness someone is expecting me! My consultant, who I have not seen for nearly 6 months, and then for the first and only time, is sporting a badge entitled ‘Head Nurse’. This does not inspire confidence and I am momentarily confused, is this my chap or is it the ‘one’ across the other side of the bed? They all look the same in the blue uniform with matching caps. It took several worrying moments to realise that the ‘Head Nurse’ was indeed my consultant. He explained that there was some internal issue about staff wearing badges. Not so concerning if he had also worn some additional identification, sat I know what, how about a badge with his name on it?? This may all be day to day in the rigours of the NHS but not so sure that this is quite the place or is it the time to address such issues. At this stage of the proceedings this patient’s stress levels are not just past red but are exploding into orbit way beyond any Ricta Scale. I spent 2 days in hospital. Finding myself in a mixed ward did nothing to aid well being. Now having the company of 3 young men in any other situation, the pub, a café etc would be most welcome but not when one has just come out of the operating theatre with the gown undone

and everything that has long gone south is not behaving itself and keeps escaping from this

thin veil of modesty. The young man opposite insisted on having a number of phone calls well littered with the ‘F’ word and was visually complicated, being tattooed from neck to wrist with goodness only knows what, all blue/black and indistinguishable. Now there must be some men out there who have had equally uncomfortable experiences when sharing a ward with women, if do perhaps you would like to give a guys point of view. Being an experienced hospital inmate I have no intention of giving up my dignity an inch more than is absolutely essential. Shortly after arriving in the mixed ward I concede that I needed the dreaded bedpan. What ever happened to design and comfort? (The male of the species are so much more fortunate in their anatomical design resulting in the simple bottle to cope with this every day function). I found myself perched on top of this hard and wobbly receptacle, with a real fear that I would soon end up on the floor. I sit there for what seems an age, my body defying all requests to do what I as of it. I give up. Not long after I have accomplished the ‘take a few sips of water without being sick’ ritual, I am

30

offered something to eat and that all important cup of tea. Immediately I am faced with a dilemma-dare I have that cup of tea? What is it about a cup of tea particularly when you have not had one for well over a day? So, no contest-I drink deeply. This being a moment equal to a foreign holiday who needs palm trees, sun or sand? That is until I try to put the cup down, the tube from the intravenous drip attached to my left hand has managed to twist itself in such a fashin that no matter how hard I try I cannot place the cup on the bedside table without the cup landing at a precarious angle on the plastic tube. It is then that I notice that the alarm bell is out of reach of my bandaged right arm, so there I sit unable to put the cup down or get help. I have the awful feeling that this could be a glimpse into the future and not all that far off. I have to resort to calling out from behind my curtain to get the attention of a nurse. I am eventually rescued with the cup, tube and bell sorted in seconds. The toilet is now a major focus for destination. I enrol the assistance of a nurse who fortunately has empathy with my predicament and helps my into my dressing gown. Only having the use of one hand, the other flopping uncontrollably in front of me in such a way that I am convinced that it really does not belong to me at all - why, oh why, did I decide to bring my nice Thai Silk wrap? What a mistake: both the nurse and myself wrestle with this slippery garment for some minutes before we are able to make me relatively decent. The visit to the toilet was another ‘palm tree and sand moment’. Having now accomplished some control of at least one part of my body I turn resolutely determined to return to my bed under my own steam. I look down - how on earth am I going to get to grips with the silkworm which is now resplendent in folds around my feet. Not to be beaten and several minutes later I manage to gain control of this creature and emerge with a unique fasting system - my teeth. I make it back to my bed where I collapse in a breathless heap from my exertions. Name & address supplied.

St Mewan Parish Council

With this copy of the Polgooth Times you will find an envelope with a Questionnaire for you to fill in so that the Parish Plan Steering Group can get a better idea of how you find life in your village and what improvements you think are necessary. The Parish Plan Steering Group were over twenty in number at the start – before Christmas, 2008. The regular attendees are Madge Mitchell of Sticker and Jonathan Childs of Polgooth (Joint Chairmen), Martin Barnes (Minutes Secretary), Linda Julyan and Debbie Donnithorne (Sticker), David Geeves MBE and Sally Bourton (Polgooth and Trewoon Post Offices), Anna Hoyle (East Cornwall Voluntary Services. Technical adviser), John Lamble (Polgooth) and Robert Meldrum (Sticker). Robert Meldrum has proved to be a real asset to the Steering Group. He has submitted many ‘drafts’ of the Questionnaire to the many meetings of the Group and has taken away many modifications to the original which was based on that used by Treverbyn Parish. The Steering Group has met every three or four weeks since its formation and the above names are the ‘regulars’ who have been present from the start. Anna Hoyle is being paid by Cornwall Council to supervise the Parish Plans in St Mewan and St Blaise Parishes. Martin Barnes is the only St Mewan Parish Councillor in the Group. Other villages are to receive the Questionnaire as well as Polgooth, Little Polgooth and Trelowth residents. They are Sticker, Lower Sticker, Hewas Water, part of Lanjeth, Trewoon, Gover and some houses at Edgcumbe Green. Each village or hamlet will get the same Questionnaire, but it is anticipated that each will have different needs and make different comments. Please take the time to fill in the Questionnaire and enter your name and address where asked if you want to be involved in the draw to win £100 or 2 X £50 prizes. You don’t have to fill in personal details unless you want to take part in the draw. All the instructions are in the form but if you have any problems or want additional forms then contact your nearest Post Office who will be glad to advise you.

You will have noticed that several bus shelters have been renovated in the Parish. This is another of the ways in which the Parish spends your precept. Each year the Clerk will suggest ways in which the money could be spent in grants, grass cutting, footpath maintenance and in the case of Polgooth, playing fields. Only this week, a broken Whitebeam tree was removed from Polgooth Goffin as it was a hazard. Thanks must go to Jeannette Warren and her team who have restored the woodwork on the seats and picnic tables in the Goffin.

GETTING TO KNOW MARGARET THOMAS HAWKE’S SHOP

Margaret Thomas nee Hawke is Polgooth born and bred. She was born ‘at top of village’ 84 years ago and apart from 7 years living in Kent has been here all her life. The business was started by her great grandmother, Mary Ann Hawke, about 1876, and passed to Richard Hawke, Margaret’s grandfather, who had the shop built on to the cottage. Customers going into the shop today are immediately aware of the uniqueness of the business although when the shop first began it sold coal, groceries and haberdashery, in fact almost anything a family in the village required. Nigel Thomas is the 5th generation to be involved in this very family business and his wife Marilyn is responsible for the additions of paintings, cards and interesting ‘pieces’. In 1942 Margaret and her parents moved into the cotta to support her grandparents, her grandfather had become very ill, and at the age of 14yrs Margaret joined the family firm working in the shop. During the war a Mrs. Thomas, headmistress of a school in Maidstone, Kent and her school children were evacuated to the village and her son Bill came to visit her whilst on leave from the Navy and that was how Bill and Margaret met. They married in 1948 and she joined Bill in Canterbury where, after the war, he was completing a course in organ building and it was there that Nigel was born. They returned to Polgooth to a flat above the shop in 1954, the eve of Nigel’s 4th birthday, when Margaret’s father needed help to run the business and Bill joined this family concern. So there were Bill and Margaret in the flat above the shop, and it was here that Andrew was born 15 months later. Margaret’s grandma with mum and dad were then living in the cottage and were all involved with Hawke’s shop and coal business. Margaret is still serving in the shop and living in the cottage today. In 1961 the grocery part of the business ceased and it became just a coal business and in 2001 Marilyn, Nigel’s wife, added the china etc. Many of the newcomers to the village would never know that Margaret is an accomplished organ player and played at the Trelowth Chapel until it closed a few years ago. She also played the keyboard regularly at the Monday morning services at Averlea until Bill’s illness. When Bill was building

organs in Kent she would sometimes get the opportunity to play a new organ before it was sold to a customer – a real treat. Margaret and her family were also involved in the village pantomimes, and when the children were young, she played for the show on a regular basis. Nigel married Marilyn Palmer and they had Emma and Richard and Andrew married Lynda Williams and they had Ryan and Carly. Margaret’s lovely close family are a constant joy to her. Andrew is not directly involved with the business and for those readers who remember Lynda Thomas’s article he manages Saxton Drilling in Cambourne. When her two boys, Nigel and Andrew, were young they went to nearly every Butlins in the country for their summer holidays, but when the boys no longer wished to join them for holidays the continent beckoned and Bill and Margaret visited New Zealand to see a pen-friend, Australia in their 70’s, Madeira, Malta, Canada and anywhere else you could name, they just loved travelling. Margaret has several hobbies that are well known to her friends and family. Mills and Boon books are a great favourite and she is never without one and puzzle books with code-breakers , she can often be seen in the shop searching for one. When the W.I. disbanded in the village she was one of the first to sign up to Polgooth Ladies Group and rarely misses a meeting. I learnt a lot about the village talking to Margaret and she sent me on my way with a bunch of flowers from her garden. Thank you.

Inn’s 250 Years of History When Polgooth flourished as a Mining Village.

It is believed that the foundations for the inn were laid in 1647 but

it was not completed until 1709. At the time it was used to pay the

wages of the people who worked in the nearby Great Polgooth

Mine, which sunk to a depth of 112 fathoms (672 feet), gave work

to 1400 men, women and children over 8 years old.

After a law was passed which made it illegal for miners to accept

their wages in a public house, a count house had to be built. In

1791, a Mr Henwood, the mine recorder visited Capt. Phillips, who

was then in charge of the mine and the count house was in

existence at the time.

In 1916 the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, who owned the inn, rented it

to a Mr Lawry for £7 10s a year, prior to this the pub was in the

hands of a Mr Tonkin who paid £1 per year! Mr Lawry was the

grandfather of David Rowe-whom many in area will remember as

the licensee.

Livewires Childrens’ Group

Livewires have enjoyed many outdoor pursuits this Summer term, enabled by amazingly good weather - praise God. We have added more colour this year to our meeting place, the village hall, by adding hanging baskets to last years’ planter. We have successfully scrubbed and re-painted the wall alongside the hall giving us a great sense of achievement. We have been kite making and flying them; making mini rafts and sailing them in a

nearby stream; making our own bunting (an idea pinched from the Eden Project);

joining in a Beat the Waves sandcastle competition on a beach; having fun in the

Goffin-with more to come as we anticipate enjoying water games to mark the end of term. Within our programme this year we have looked at the life of Jesus and tried to understand why He came and what difference it makes to us now, Some of us have regularly and made a difference, supported the church in their All-Age Services. We look forward to our summer break and our return in September to new challenges and experiences. There is plenty of room for more young people between the ages of 7 and 11, so spread the word.
