Totalitarianism

• form of government in which the ruler is an absolute ruler, not restricted by a constitution, laws or opposition

• political system where the state has total authority over society and tries to control all aspects of public and private life

• Synonym: dictatorship

EX: When I gave out candy the first time, giving it only to those who are closest to me, then giving and taking as I saw fit, our class had a totalitarian government.

What are the problems with a totalitarian government?

Capitalism • an economic system based on private

ownership of the production and the creation of goods or services for profit

• Offers opportunity for changing one’s economic status, but does create a class system

EX: When I gave candy to those who were lucky enough to sit near me or worked very hard, this was a capitalist classroom. Rewards were detirmined by work ethic and social class.

Socialism• an economic system characterized by co-

ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy

• Key Features: equal distribution of wealth and goods regardless personal contribution, a “class-less” system

EX: When I gave one piece of candy to everyone, regardless of work ethic or seat placement, we had a socialist classroom.
