Welcome to summer! With longer days and hotter temperatures, people are more inclined to walk or ride their bike to reach a specific destination. While doing the former one day, I realized how out of shape and unhealthy I’ve become. With a rigorous schedule (which always manages to find room for patio dates and parties), it’s difficult to exercise daily and eat right. I could barely walk three blocks without breaking a sweat!

I’m certain that if I’m feeling this way, others are also. In This issue we’re focusing on health and beauty as both are quite related. We chose to feature new Universal signee, Nirvana as she’s a hot singer and dancer who makes staying fit her number one priority. For those who opt to achieve their best body- the new way as opposed to the old fashioned way- writer, Sahar Talebi, digs deeper into the trend of non-invasive surgeries. And lastly, we’ve featured a ton of beauty products for any budget! So get healthy and be beautiful (not just this summer, but all year long)!

ALBUM REVIEWSALBUM REVIEWS Lady Gaga is back with yet another hit album, Born This Way. But don’t expect the ever controversial pop star to tone down her subject matter or lyricism for the masses- as she does quite the opposite. With the release of the infectious, second single, Judas, Lady Gaga faced harsh criticism for her choice of subject matter and its relation to Christianity. This album shows how heavily influenced Gaga is by Madonna and the late 80s/early 90s era, as with songs such as Born this Way, Americano and Marry the Night drawing parallels to Madonna’s catalogue. This album creates an easy rock feel, as Gaga also channels country music. Although this is not Gaga’s best album at this point in her career, it does however, depict her true artistry and creativity. Album favourites include Bloody Mary, Americano, and The Edge of Glory.

Lady Gaga - Born This Way

Ranking:

Jenny from the block is back! Jennifer "J. Lo" Lopez proves that she is still a heavy weight in the industry, even after a lengthy hiatus, with the release of her latest album, Love?. What makes this album so special is that she returns to her dance music roots. Not only is this a dance record but it is also urban, pop and heavily influenced by Jennifer's Puerto Rican background. You can play Love? in your car, on a road trip, at the club or even while cleaning the house, as it instantly makes you want to sing along and get up and dance. Album favourites include "On The Floor" featuring Pitbull, "Good Hit", "Papi", "(What Is) Love?".

Jennifer Lopez - Love?

Ranking:

Electronic/house music veteran is back with a new album, Electroman. Benny Benassi, the real Electroman, hits us with a smash album. With features from Chris Brown, Kelis, Gary Go, T-Pain and Jean Baptiste, this is one of Benny’s most diverse albums. Remaining true to his sound, Benny produces and mixes the entire record. Album favourites include “Beautiful People” ft Chris Brown, “Electroman” featuring T-Pain, “My House” featuring Jean Baptiste and “Spaceship”.

Benny Benassi - Electroman

On June 28th, Beyoncé drops her most anticipated album yet, 4. For the upcoming album, we have been given sneak peeks with the release of “1+1” on American Idol, “Best I Never Had” and the chart topping single, “Girls (Run the World)”. But we must remember that Beyoncé never disappoints her fans as her albums are well executed, have great production and even better vocals. 4 is currently available for pre-order on iTunes. And on June 28th, make sure you visit your local record store or head online to purchase Bey’s new album. I know I will.

Shad, more than just a rapperWARNING: Listening to Shad’s acclaimed album TSOL may give you that head-swimming feeling you get when you’ve just ingested a lot of information. There’s politics: “I never laughed and cried at the same time/ until I heard a church pray for the death of Obama/ and wondered if they knew they share that prayer with Osama/ blasphemy and karma, the comedy of drama”; and power: “Same things that float your boat can capsize it/ tell the snakes they can take a hike like gas prices/ no such things as half-way crooks or half righteous/ those who have eyes should act like it.” He also juxtaposes pop culture: “Love, I get so lost/ lost as Matthew Fox” with planetary imagery, and while his album implores the listener to bring their awareness upon the many hypocrisies of past and current events, it’s never short on punch lines: “Should’ve left the cell at home/ we’re breaking up/ can’t hear what she’s saying/ but I get the tone.”

TSOL is a must-listen. Besides beating out Drake for Best Rap Record at this year’s Juno Awards, and being shortlisted for the 2010 Polaris Prize, the album not

only grooves from start to finish with top-notch production and special guest appearances, it also has that special something—that consciousness-probing something.

His fans have come to expect a certain transparency evident on the 2005 DIY debut, When This is Over (written and recorded while he was a business student at Wilfred Laurier University and funded by winnings from a radio station contest),

I try to push my courage as much as I can. I think that’s good for me and good for whoever’s listening,” he says.

Shad still cites the artists he listened to in high school as some of his biggest influences—Common, Black Thought, Outkast, Eminem, and Ras Kass to name a few. “Eminem’s first verse on ‘Renegade’ is up there— it’s just so perfect. Common on that Roots track from Things Fall Apart, and Jay-Z’s verse on Coldplay’s ‘Lost’ remix is super dope to me,” he says of specific lyrics that have profoundly touched him. “Outside of music, my main influences are all the regular things—friends, family, life experiences, etc. I’d add my spiritual life to that list too – some of the imagery and metaphors that describe love and truth that I engage with also inspire my imagination and influence my work.”

“I would love to see less celebrity culture or worship around music,” he says, although he is steadily gaining recognition himself as he continues to study for his Masters in Liberal Arts at B.C.’s Simon Fraser University.

and his second album, The Old Prince, also shortlisted for the Polaris in 2008. Shad, who was born in Kenya to Rwandan parents before relocating to London, ON, included a haunting track about his mother’s experience in the Rwandan genocide on When This is Over, and regularly peppers his raps with self-deprecating humour:

“I hope I ain’t boring y’all rappin’ ‘bout rap/ But the only thing I love more than rappin’ is nappin’/ And I know nobody want to hear me rap about that.” He admits that honesty can be frightening: “It’s a tricky thing because I don’t want my raps to sound like whiny journal entries but I also don’t want to lie or not share things that I should because of fear.

“I wouldn’t really call myself a scholar but there are things outside of music that I’m interested in and different avenues for sharing ideas that I’ve started exploring a bit. I’m giving a lecture next month; I started blogging a bit for the Vancouver Sun. I’m not sure if I’ll be much good at either of those but it’s fun trying them out,” he says.

And Shad’s future plans? “Writing, hangin’ in Vancouver, enjoying summer!”

Summer Hair for 2011Now that summer’s here, it’s time to let loose and try

something new with your do! Whether your hair is long, medium or short in length, we’ve got the sexiest trends in hair for the summer.

A stylish look that can be worn with any outfit for any event. You can braid it around like a hair-band, braid the ends out like Ashley, or braid it up into a bun like Anne. The braid will definitely set the trend whether, you’re on vacation on the islands, or attending the cottage for the long weekend.

Sometimes shorter is better! No matter how you like to rock your hair, there are many things you can do with a pixie. Whether you rock bangs like Kelis, slicked back hair like Hayden, or even a faux hawk like Pink, the short look is great for those who prefer easy-to-maintain hair during the summer heat.

A look you can never go wrong with for the excitement the summer brings. Opt for tight curls like Rihanna by using a small barrelled curling wand. If you enjoy romantic loose curls like Amanda, flexi-rods are your tools of choice. To get Beyoncé’s infamous curls, using curlers or a ¾ inch curling iron will do the trick!

Easy to create, and great with any summer outfit, all you need for this look is a bit of hair spray and a hair tie. Use pomade or hair spray to get rid of fly-aways and be red-carpet ready like Vanessa, downtown cool like Shanae, or romantic-night ready like Hilary in a matter of minutes!! By far, one of my favourite do’s for the summer!

If you thought the only things to eliminate were wrinkles, redness, blotches of discolouration, and vascular lesions, think again! Fresh and rejuvenated skin is definitely a common goal for those undergoing treatments, but now you can say good-bye to cellulite, flabby skin, stretch marks, and even unwanted fat in as little as 2 to 6 sessions without any surgery!

With the recent increase in demand for non-invasive cosmetic procedures, cosmetic clinics everywhere have began to heavily invest in new technologies and treatments targeting problem areas without having patients undergo major surgery and recovery time. “Our clients’ overall health and appearance is a primary concern for them, and our goal is to satisfy our clients’ needs as best as possible— quickly, effectively, and with close to no down time,” states Leyla Derysavi, the top aesthetician and Director  of Leyla Medical Cosmetics Laser- one of the city’s leading aesthetic laser facilities.

Cosmetic laser equipments generally work at a number of different wavelengths, targeting problem areas

by either an intense laser beam or several small beams of infrared light in order to achieve the most effective results with virtually no negative consequences to the areas treated. Most machines have a number of different hand-pieces that target a specific problem throughout the body. Digging deeper in the world of non-surgical cosmetic procedures would inevitably bring us to one of the more recent— and perhaps exciting— innovations at our disposal to assist with our possible summer goals. The use of ultrasound energy to literally melt away pockets of fat on the abdominal area, thighs, and flanks, means unwanted fat cells are gone painlessly,

and on average, in as quickly as three treatments. If you’re thinking this kind of procedure will cost you an arm and a leg, you’ll be happy to know that prices range from $100 to over $1000 per session/package, depending on equipment used, the type of treatment, as well as the problem areas targeted; and in many cases, financing is available to eligible clients.

Remember, while these treatments could get you several steps closer to rocking that skin tight Chloé dress, or give you the confidence to go shirtless during beach volleyball with the fellas, it is important to understand that there may still be some risks involved. The key is to be informed prior to undergoing a session. Always ensure that the procedure is being performed by a laser technician specialist under the direct supervision of a licensed physician. Finally, be sure to attend a consultation session before your first treatment to determine whether this is the right decision for you. Above all, make your health and well-being your number one priority for not only this coming summer, but always. After all, you can only look as good as you feel.

But since nothing good comes easy, working flowery fabrics, wearing Grecian dresses, paper-thin tanks, rolled-up denims and those super fitted Ralph Lauren classic polos, present the burden of having to look up to par. As it happens, fabulous summer trends tend to be unforgiving on the body, highlighting all sorts of bumps and marks you’d much rather keep hidden.

Naturally, many of us tend to feel a bit anxious about the few pounds we may have put on during the winter season. With big winter jackets, snow pants, and unflattering wool sweaters thrown to the back of the closet for the next few months, getting rid of love handles, blotchy skin, and unwanted pounds where it counts, find their way on the very top of our to-do lists. Luckily, aside from the good old traditional diets, gym work outs, and spray tans, there are numerous options made available to us. Some are more traditional and others are modernized just in time for summer to help kick start our “beach ready” journeys. Amongst one of the most reliable and affordable options— laser and wave treatments.

and also by making sure I spend as much of my free time with my loved ones.

For new Universal recording artist, Nirvana Savoury–whose name signifies reaching a place of happiness with no suffering–individuality and presence are what make her captivating in an industry imploded with several “out-there artists.” Deriving from a family history in the arts, her first label experience being part of the successful Canadian trio, X-quisite, Nirvana has refreshed her sound and is ready to re-introduce it to the world. Her new sound fuses Pop, Dance and Electro genres.

As a solo artist Nirvana has worked with Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Midi Mafia, and Grammy nominated Bob Sinclair. She’s shared the stage with Rock ‘N’ Roll hall of famer inductee, Dave Mason and played at the historic Carnegie Hall, not to mention receiving acclamation from the New York Post.

After a lengthy hiatus, Nirvana, is making new music and rocking a body that would make many envious. Her Chinese-Jamaican mother, a trained dancer passed on her impeccable talent that makes Nirvana a triple threat.

Outspoken and authentic, Nirvana shows no qualms about embracing her new music, body and sexuality and is ready to bear it all for the world to see. Her singles, “Lipstick Lover” and “Throb” are evidence of this. Nirvana makes health and beauty seem effortless, but it involves a tough regimen. She shares her tips with us:

You have impeccable skin and a great body, how do you maintain it?

I dance 3-4 days a week and use the Core workout by P90X. My morning starts with a 30 min run/vocal workout. I find a field close by and run while singing my songs and ABCs. I'm obsessed with staying in shape. I refuse to let cellulite to show up on these thighs

What are your eating habits like?

Eating habits are very strict these days. I’m working towards becoming a vegetarian because overall, it’s a better way to live. Contrary to popular belief, your body produces protein on its own from eating raw fruits and veggies, however, there’s nothing like a juicy tender chicken breast from time to time!

As for my skin: WATER, WATER, WATER!!

Follow Nirvana on Twitter: www.twitter.com/nsavoury

What is your daily schedule like?

Each day is different. These days I’m in 4-hour dance rehearsals working on my stage performance. After rehearsals, I’m on the phone and answering emails pertaining to my business.

How do you create balance in your life?

I wake up each day giving thanks for life. Each day is a Blessing, and being in this business is a bonus. I find balance appreciating everything good, bad and ugly that comes into my life, and also by making sure I spend as much of my free time with my loved ones.

Are there any bad health habits, you’re trying to combat now?

Apart from eating right, getting enough exercise is key to maintaining one’s health. If intense cardio and weight lifting isn’t your thing, yoga or pilates may be a better option. For beginners, don’t be fooled, yoga is still intense and takes patience; but the rewards are great. I recently attended the opening of the Yoga Tree Downtown location and it was quite the experience. The spacious studio boasts spa like amenities and art from local artists displayed throughout. Founders, Jason Lu and Debbie Fung, gave us some tips to embarking on your yoga journey and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

What are some of the features of the Yoga Tree downtown?

Debbie: Apart from just offering yoga, we try to make it a bit more spa-like so people can actually enjoy all the amenities. For instance, we have a beverage bar so you can enjoy a sip of tea at the end of your session. We also have showers and lockers for comfort.

Jason: Even the soap we offer, is designed by us and has no parabens or sulphates. After you do a hot yoga workout, your pores are open so you’re not putting all that dirt back into your skin.

For someone who has never done yoga before, what classes would you recommend?

Jason: For someone who has never done yoga, we recommend the Hatha Flow classes or the gentle Hatha classes. They have a bit of flow so you don’t get uncomfortable holding some of the poses in the beginning and you still get the foundation [of the yoga practice.]

What’s In That?By Courtney Roberts

Lately everywhere I turn, whether in articles, on TV or online, I see the same headlines: "Lose weight fast! Eat more! Weigh Less! Your summer Diet plan," etc. Not only has the world become preoccupied with eating less calories, we don't seem to care what we eat- as long as the manufacturers tell us we won’t gain weight by eating it.

Calorie-phobes will usually chew gum that’s 90 calories, or eat a small pack of cookies that’s 120, without knowing what’s in it. So often, we disregard the ingredients that are in the food we consume. Society has become accustomed to trusting what’s on supermarket shelves and believing the misconception that because it’s not greasy fast food, it’s better for us. Well, consider yourself fooled.

I love sweets, but instead of baking them from scratch, I often opt for store bought. Big mistake. When I brought them home, I performed my usual habit as of late and looked at the ingredients listed on the package. You can imagine my surprise when I saw sodium-aluminum phosphate listed as an ingredient. I immediately wondered what an organic metal would be doing in cookies? It just didn’t make sense.

Evidently not enough people have been asking similar questions about what’s in the food highly marketed to us. Either that or we’ve been silenced.

Have you ever wondered why high glucose-fructose, corn syrup and aspartame is in almost everything we eat?

Fructose is commonly found in sweeteners like sugar, high fructose corn syrup and honey. If you’re someone who loves soft drinks, you may want to curb that habit. They contain caffeine, sugar and sugar substitutes. They can also contain artificial coloring, flavouring, and preservatives. This sugar ends up being stored as fat in the body, which results in weight gain an increase of heart disease and cancer. Diet soft drinks are no better, as they contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, or saccharin. Such sweeteners have been linked to cancer, obesity and osteoporosis. Your best bet is to drink water and natural juices.

“Such sweeteners have been linked to cancer, obesity and osteoporosis. Your best bet is to drink water and natural juices.”According to Clean Eating Online, A recent study at the University of Colorado found that people who consume more than 74 grams of fructose a day had an 87% higher risk of high blood pressure.

I didn’t until this year and it’s startling when you find out all the unnatural ingredients that go into the food we love.

Due to globalization and the global demand for food, manufacturers have to make more food at a faster rate, which will last longer, hence the need for preservatives and chemicals.

A non-profit group called the Environmental Working Group (EWG) created a list of fruits and vegetables and ranked them from most to least contaminated with pesticides.

According to EWG, the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables are:

• Apples• Sweet bell peppers • Celery• Nectarines• Strawberries• Cherries• Lettuce• Grapes• Pears• Spinach• Potatoes

While eating fruits and vegetables is important, consuming pesticides isn’t. One solution is to buy organic. Yes, it’s more expensive, however, you can’t put a price on your health. If you can’t afford to buy everything organic, buy what you consume most of from your local farm or the organic section of your grocery store. This way you consume less pesticide, (which prove to have adverse affects over an extended period of time) save money, and consider your health.
