The challenge 4th grade teachers, Karen Bennett and Elwood Kratzer,

aimed to balance the needs o economically and

learning disadvantaged students, while challenging

gited students. “All o these goals were directed at

increasing the academic achievement o everyone in thei

classrooms.”

The solution

Having prior success with PolyVision interactive

whiteboards in the district’s middle and high schools,

Linntown Intermediate Principal and District Supervisor,

Paula Reber, chose to purchase PolyVision’s innovative

addition to interactive whiteboard technology, ēno, or

every classroom in 2nd through 5th grade.

The benefts

ēno enabled Karen and Elwood to teach interactive

lessons to a diverse group o students while tappinginto their innate understanding and excitement

toward technology.

Diverse learners plug into ēno® and fnd a common ground

Overview

Linntown Intermediate is a low-income school with a population o 300 4th

and 5th grade students. Classrooms are comprised o a mix o students

rom a wide range o backgrounds and various academic gited, learning

and reading support, ESL and special needs. Adding to the challenge,

some students come rom troubled homes, emotional and/or behavioral

issues into the classroom. Fulflling the personal and academic needs

o such a diverse group o students a constant balancing act or Karen

Bennett and Elwood Kratzer.

The challenge

To ensure lessons are completed on-time and every student is prepared

to meet academic standards, a quick pace must be maintained in the

classrooms at Linntown Intermediate. Karen explains, “With so much o the

school day devoted to learning, and only 15 minutes o recess, students

have little ree time to burn o energy. And, students who have been absent

lose their recess to make-up missed assignments.” The rushed learning

environment in Karen’s classroom little time or interaction, causing many

students to get distracted, lose ocus and, ultimately, all behind.

“Any cons that could have beenassociated with an interactive

whiteboard, such as loss o traditional

whiteboard space, high installation

costs and cords to get tangled,

were non-issues with ēno.”

Paula Reber

Linntown Intermediate Principal

and District Technology Supervisor

Many days, Karen and Elwood overwhelmed by the need to accommodate

instruction or such a wide range o learning types. With only one interactive

whiteboard in the school, both teachers were rustrated by the lack o

technology in their classrooms. I only they could provide interactive lessons

that mirrored the technology their students used outside o the classroom, they could keep students at any level engaged and motivated to learn. High

expectations, coupled with limited access to resources, made the goal

o raising academic standards in Karen and Elwood’s classrooms seem

unattainable.

The Solution

Linntown Intermediate Principal and District Technology Supervisor,

Paula Reber, utilized Classroom o the Future unds to implement

PolyVision interactive whiteboards in the district’s middle school and

high school. Based on the success o PolyVision boards in the upper-level

classrooms, the district decided to expand the integration o technology

to the elementary school classrooms with PolyVision’s ēno interactive

whiteboards.

Paula said, “When evaluating interactive whiteboards to integrate into the

elementary schools in our district, our goal was to select technology that

could easily become a seamless component o everyday teaching and

learning. As opposed to ocusing on the technology, our ocus was, and

continues to be, how the technology can help us to accomplish learning.”

Paula continued, “We knew rom experience that it was important to select

a company that provides ongoing support and ensures that the entire

sta is comortable with the technology. From our existing relationship

with PolyVision, we were confdent in their ability to provide outstanding

technical and developmental support.” Paula concluded, “Our PolyVision

representative is always prompt when we ask questions or have concerns.

I believe that PolyVision will not settle or anything less than our school

being 100% comortable and capable o getting optimal use out o the

boards in our classrooms.”

Price was a driving actor or the district, since they wanted to install

interactive whiteboards in as many classrooms as possible. The ēno

solution was the obvious, logical choice, providing all o the benefts o a

traditional dry-erase board, along with 21st Century interactive capabilities.

ēno was the clear winner or lowest total cost o ownership among the

competition. Paula explains, “Any cons that could have been associated

with an interactive whiteboard, such as loss o traditional whiteboard space,

high installation costs and cords to get tangled, were non-issues with ēno.”

Currently, ēno is installed in every 2nd through 5th grade classroom in the

Lewisburg area school district. Paula said that the response rom teachers

and students alike has been so positive that the district plans to expand

integration o ēno to all kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms during the

2010-2011 school year.

Why Linntown Intermediate School chose ēno

• Accommodates all types of learners

• Low total cost of ownership

• Prior success with PolyVision

and developmental support

“I like usingēno because it’s neat

and the technology is exciting.

Learning is easier and more un

when you can get out o your seat

and interact with lessons!” Student

Elwood Kratzer’s 4th Grade Class

The Benefts

Excitement flled the air at Linntown Intermediate ollowing the installation

o ēno in the classrooms. Karen admits she was a bit intimidated at frst by

her new interactive whiteboard. “Now, I transition with ease rom dry-erasemarkers, to magnets and back to the stylus again.”

Elwood also noticed that his students instantly related to ēno. “From the

frst day I taught lessons with ēno, my students were more engaged and

ocused. They absolutely loved it.” He continues, “When my students go

home, they plug in and play. ēno enabled me to tap into their enthusiasm

or technology and use it to motivate them to learn in the classroom.

Behaviorally, my students are more inclined to listen intently and be ready

to answer a question i it means they might get a chance to use the stylus.

Outside distractions and worries rom home don’t stand a chance against

ēno’s ability to keep my students captivated during a lesson.”

For Karen, Elwood and their students, the school day doesn’t eel quite

so rushed anymore. Karen explains, “ēno allows me to set up my lessons

in advance, saving my precious teaching time or class. For example, I

can prepare math homework, the daily language review and a website or

reading ahead o time. Then, it is ready to project on the whiteboard when

my students arrive. I also write notes on ēno and print out the inormation

or students who are absent. ēno is a real time-saver.”

Elwood’s class is flled with many types o learners. But, according to him,

the one thing they all have in common is their desire to learn hands-on by

and actively participating in lessons rather than passively listening. He said,

“During math class, we like using the Function Machine in RM Easiteach®.

Students enjoy manipulating the variables to solve or unknowns. I

also let them play quiz games on ēno to review lessons and check or

understanding. Beore reading a book, I use Google Earth to virtually take

students to a story setting, like New York City. We walk on the streets and

see the sights, all rom the comort o our classroom!”

It has only been a ew short months since ēno was installed at Linntown

Intermediate. However, eelings o rustration and hopelessness among

sta and students have been replaced with a renewed zeal or learning.

Interactive, engaging lessons taught on with ēno are bringing the goal o

higher achievement within reach or all students.  n
