Whether you are throwing a summer garden party, or attending one for a wedding reception, engagement party or a baby shower, it is the perfect time to show off your floral prints, pastel colors and summer hats. Most garden parties are upscale, rich in natural elements, delicious food and lots of grass underfoot. At a garden party you can wear everything from khaki pants and a seersucker shirt to candy-colored dresses. Consider these tips when

choosing your outfit for your next summer garden soirée:

IT'S SUMMER GARDEN PARTY TIME!Consider these tips when choosing your outfit for your next summer garden soirée

Photo © Monkey Business - Fotolia.com

(FABRICS)Light and airy is the ambience at a garden party. Choose fabrics such as cotton, linen, rayon, silk, jersey, chambray and seersucker. Georgette, another sheer and airy material, similar to chiffon, is also a great choice for a summer garden party. All of these fabrics are comfortable, soft and flowing, and will quickly absorb and release perspiration so that the fabric can breathe.

MenMen's attire should be conservative, lightweight, in pastel or bright colors. Wear slacks or dressy shorts in khaki, chocolate, white, navy blue or slate. Make sure to wear a belt if there are belt loops. These can be worn with a button-down shirt, a long-sleeved Oxford with the sleeves rolled up or a short-sleeved polo. Depending on the occasion, add a lightweight tweed jacket or blazer. Shoes should be thin-soled, canvas style tennis shoes, leather sandal, boat shoe or lace-up wing tip to complete the look. Jewelry should be small and tasteful, such as a chrome watch, a gold bracelet and classic yet trendy eye wear.

WomenFloral patterns, pastel tones or bright colors go well in a garden setting. I would suggest a silk or delicate blouse with tailored shorts, sleek pants or capris, or a ruffled or flowing skirt. Add a textured belt and wear a colorful pair of platforms or flats for walking with ease. Make sure that they are elegant, not sporty, beach shoes or everyday shoes.

To compliment your look choose jewelry that is simple and minimal; a small chain with a pendant, earrings, or bracelet, a floppy straw or any delicately woven hat, a pair of fashionable sunglasses or a printed scarf. Your hair and makeup should be soft

and natural. Keep in mind that loose fitting clothes keep the air circulating around your body better than tight clothes.ChildrenDress children in the same vein as the adults. Girls will look adorable in soft fabrics with bright or pastel colors, and prints such as butterflies, flowers, polka-dots or ice cream-inspired stripes. Pair this with white or neutral colored sandals or buckled dress shoes. Use a matching ribbon in the hair or add a floral head band. Boys will look stylish in khaki pants or linen shorts, a button-down or polo shirt with either brown leather sandals or oxford-type shoes.

hatever you decide to wear, once you get to the event forget about your doubts and have fun. Try not to think about what you could’ve worn. Enjoy your garden party; that’s what you are there for!W

How to Postpone a Wedding: Handle the unexpected with grace

FASHION: THE GOODS || YOUR LIFESTYLEBETTER SAFE...!

Ah wedded bliss...on the horizon...the dress is ordered, the florist and caterer scheduled and then...for whatever reason you and your betrothed decide to postpone the wedding. With invitations already in the mail, this is no longer just about you and your issue of delay. You must let people know. When a wedding is cancelled or rescheduled, you can contact guests in the following manner depending on their relation to you.

About Benjamin's Fine Alterations and TailoringBenjamin's blends long-forgotten high standards in sewing with outstanding personal service. Drop by 2609 East Atlantic Boulevard, call them at 954-943-5878, or visit them online at benjaminsalterations.com.

Printed cards with wording such as:

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smithannounce that the marriage of their daughter

Suzy Smithto

Jack Spratt will not take place/has been postponed.

You may choose to send a handwritten

note – in which case

the information contained within

regarding the reasoning

for the postponement would – by nature – be more personal.

And last – as painful as it may be –

some invited guests/friends/family members deserve

a phone call – in this case there is one exception

to the relation reference – if you have guests traveling

long distances, you must call them

as soon as possible to notify them

of the change in plans.

Although difficult and stressful, when handled with grace this process will ultimately make moving forward far easier.

YOUR LIFESTYLE || MARITAL MINUTES

One of the women who works in my office is going to get married in one week. Although she has not discussed the details of her wedding as much as other brides I have known in the past, I know that she has put many long hours in to ensure her wedding day is perfect. So much time is spent by couples, especially brides, to plan and prepare for this special day. I do not blame them because your wedding day is a day that you will remember for the rest of your lives.

Although your wedding is a special day, it is important that remember that it is in fact only one day. A wedding lasts a day, but a marriage lasts a lifetime. Why it then that so much time is spent planning this one day and often a minimal amount of time is spent preparing for marriage?

I felt that I was fortunate that my husband and I were required by our church to take a class on marriage and be mentored by a married couple prior to getting married. This process did open my eyes to what my world will become after the wedding day had

passed. Even if my husband and I did participate in this marriage preparation process, I probably did not know enough, or do enough, to prepare myself to be married.

Because I was not prepared for marriage, after I was married I did a lot of growing (actually both my husband and I grew). During this period of growth, times did get somewhat turbulent because each spouse had to make accommodations for the other spouse. Examples of the changes we had to make included changing our perspectives on life. We both had to convert to a “we” as opposed to “me” mindset. We also had to make compromises and sacrifices. We could not afford (or sometimes we did not have the time) to do things that we used to do when we were single.

I think that if I was a bit more knowledgeable prior to embarking on my journey as a married woman, the beginning of my marriage would have went a bit more smoothly. Change is usually accompanied by stress, so a large amount of change can sometimes be extremely stressful. If I could give a piece of advice to engaged couples, it would be to put as much (or more) time into preparing for married life as you put into preparing for your wedding day.

A wedding lasts a day - a marriage lasts a lifetimeMARITAL MINUTES

NEXT GENERATION

|||||||||▐ summer gardening in south florida

your kidsThrough the leadership of the Broward Education Foundation

and with the help of community partnerships, many Broward County public school students are learning about gardening and nutrition through the Garden Delights Program. This program provides funding, teacher training, and the guidance of a Master Gardener to assist in the design, installation, and maintenance of a vegetable garden at participating school locations. The Garden Delights Program includes curriculum that incorporates real

world learning experiences with lessons that develop reading, writing, math, and science skills. This student-centered program contributes to positive academic growth and plants the seeds for a lifetime of healthy eating. Participating schools close to Pompano Beach are Deerfield Beach and Maplewood Elementary schools. Although not a member of the Garden Delights Program, Blanche Ely High School has a student garden that is visible from Northwest 6th Avenue. For more information on the Garden Delights Program call 754-321-2032 or email Coco Burns at [email protected].

For those of us not participating in the Broward Education Foundation gardening program, there are still plenty of opportunities to learn from a Master Gardener! As of 2013, the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division established six Master Gardner Public Service Centers across the county to assist residents on a variety of topics from environmental

education to fertilizer use. Residents are encouraged to visit the centers in person or send an email to [email protected]. For more advanced gardeners, the next step may be to earn the University of Florida - Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) Florida Master Gardener title for themselves. Master Gardener preparation courses run 15 weeks, teach a research-based curriculum, and include the completion of 75 pre-approved service hours. Click on the following link to learn more about the program or locate a Master Gardner Public Service Center http://www.broward.org/Parks/Extension/UrbanHorticulture/Pages/Master-Gardener-Public-Service-Center-FAQ%27s.aspx.

More great information to get you on the path to Summer Gardening in South Florida can be found at the Broward Library http://www.broward.org/Library/Pages/Default.aspx or from the Broward Farm Bureau http://www.browardfarmbureau.com/tiparchive.htm.

BANKUNITED REBUILDS TOGETHER

In a National Rebuilding Day event sponsored by BankUnited, Rebuilding Together Broward brought together approximately 400 volunteers and dozens of local businesses to stabilize and revitalize approximately 16 homes of low-income homeowners living in the Collier City community of Pompano Beach.

BankUnited volunteers painted and rehabilitated the exterior of the home that Ralph Banks, a 77 year-old wheelchair-bound man, has lived in for 40 years and shares with his daughter and three grandchildren.

BankUnited Senior Executive Vice President Gerry Litrento was among the volunteers. “BankUnited has two new branches in Pompano and this year our employees plan to donate 1,000 volunteer hours to local organizations in the communities we serve,” Litrento said. “By restoring safe and healthy living conditions at no cost to homeowners, Rebuilding Together Broward improves the homes, the health of homeowners and their communities.”

National Rebuilding Month is a month-long call to service during the entire month of April, culminating with National Rebuilding Day, held on the last Saturday in April. One of more than 160 affiliates serving communities across the nation, Rebuilding Together Broward has rehabilitated more than 375 homes and community centers, investing more than $4 million into the community since 2003.

Be aware of risk factors that cause heart disease. Specifically,

1. Stop Smoking.2. Check your cholesterol profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL good cholesterol, and LDL bad cholesterol), and fasting blood sugar.3. Perform aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes, five times per week. This could include anything from walking to taking zumba classes.4. Check your body mass index (BMI).5. Always consult your physician before making significant lifestyle changes to find out what’s right for you.

Does aspirin really help the heart?

Yes. Aspirin is a blood thinner that reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke, also known as brain attacks. Ask your doctor if you should take aspirin.

What are big no-no’s for a healthy heart?

First and foremost, don’t smoke. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption (more than two drinks per day). This adds unnecessary calories, raises triglycerides and damages the heart muscle in the long term. This is especially true of beer.

What should someone do if they are experiencing chest pain?

Cardiac chest pain is usually specific. It is dull, located in the central or front part of the chest, lasts a few minutes, occurs generally with moderate to severe exertion or severe psychosocial stress,

and is relieved by rest. It may mimic indigestion. Always seek medical attention.

What are good foods for the heart?

Mediterranean diets, those that are rich in grains, nuts and olive oil, are heart healthy.Maintain a low carb diet, and reduce the amount of bread, rice, potatoes and pasta you eat.

Are there routine medical tests that should be done for the heart?

No medical test is considered routine. Based on your risk factor profile and symptoms, your doctor may order specific tests. These include:1. Fasting cholesterol profile if you have a family history.2. Chest X-ray for smokers.3. A stress test and chest X-ray for those experiencing chest pain. 4. Lipid profile, fasting blood glucose and kidney function for the overweight, or those with high blood pressure or diabetes.

So, here we are, the Month of May (as I write this) where most of our snowbird residents have left South Florida and gone back to celebrate and enjoy the spring weather in NY, NJ or even IL…. Most of our customers and friends were talking about the pleasure of going back home and starting their gardens. Then, I started thinking, we still garden here in South Florida- it may not be the same gardening they do “Up North” but we still relax, enjoy and celebrate Gardening as a hobby.

We even have a new initiatives in South Florida - to develop gardens and green spaces in our urban neighborhoods and bring back some of the sensory experience that have proven that gardening reduces stress, improves depression symptoms, increases blood circulation and gives the gardener a sense of achievement and joy. We live in a fast paced environment where we are so bombarded by emails, texts, twitter messages, instagram and youtube messages that we forget to get out in the fresh air and enjoy nature…

We all need to have hobbies, and what better hobby to acquire is there than to get out from behind the computer, TV or game screens and step outside of our homes to the gardens or parks and start engaging in gardening, or just walking and looking at the different colors that Mother Nature has supplied, listen to the breeze, the tree branches’ movements and to the soil soundly beneath our feet, look up at the beautiful sky and just feel as if the stress of the world has lifted off our shoulders…

Trust me with this exercise… you will love the feeling of serenity and that sense of ZEN flowing over your soul!

Now, for some of us, gardening may mean getting our hands dirty and manual labor that may not be appealing… Some of us find another way of relaxation through another labor of love! Yes, the love of having our vehicles clean, shiny and looking like new… I don’t know about you, but many Sunday mornings, my neighbors and I enjoy washing our cars.

Washing your car at home can be a relaxing activity on a weekend. You can make it a fun project for the whole family. In the long run, you will be saving money on the car washes and you are protecting the clear coat from fading… keeping some of the dirt, grime and insect/bird droppings on the car can affect your car finish… So, to wash your car/van/truck or even boat at home, you will

need some supplies- always opt for the professional brand - it may be pricey, but your vehicle will thank you!

1. A hose: to wash and rinse your vehicle. I personally like to attach a spray nozzle to the hose so I can choose the strength of the water flow.2. A bucket: any bucket that will hold about five gallons of water- your gardening bucket will serve you well.3. Car wash shampoo/cleaner: choose one that has the right pH balance and is gentle and will enhance the gloss/finish on the vehicle. 4. Sheepskin Mitts: these are soft and hold plenty of water, tackle the dirt and grime on the car and are easily washable.5. Brushes: these would be good if you have a larger vehicle or a boat. The best are made with natural animal hair.6. Drying Towels: you can use a chamois or the waffle weaved microfiber towel that holds a lot of water. It is still as effective and efficient.

Now that you have all your supplies, schedule one to three hours of your time to get your vehicle washed. Park your vehicle under the shade or plan to do this early in the morning. We don’t want to dry up the shampoo before we rinse it. I usually start by thoroughly rinsing the full surface of the car with clean water, focusing on the grime on the wheels, the front and back bumpers and the rocker panels. These are usually the hardest/toughest parts to clean.

Next is the shampoo stage- by using the mitts or the brushes (depending on the area), I start from the top and move downward. I load up the car wash mitt or brush with the shampoo solution (that I diluted in the water) and I start washing away. Some of the areas, I go over twice and even three times to remove all the grime, dirt and dried up flies attached to the bumper and hood… I wash in short straight lines and rinse the wash mitt/brush every time I use it. I rinse the car with the hose nozzle, and then I dry it with the towels. Yes, after I am done with the car, I get that sense of accomplishment, a labor of love, a special bond and memory is being created with my kids and at the same time, I saved some money… It is an overall sense of well being: win, win all the way.

So, whether you are planning to garden this summer in South Florida or just wash your car, just remember that you are exercising, you are feeling good about yourself and you are being a better person for making a difference...

POMPANO FARMERS MARKETTHE PLACE TO BE IN THE 1930S

Thanks to Dan Hobby and the Pompano Beach Historical Society for the photo and information about Pompano's first farmers market. To learn more about our city's fascinating history, visit pompanohistory.com.

Pompano's first farmers market was located on Flagler Avenue, alongside the Florida East Coast Railway tracks. Local famers would bring their produce to the downtown area where it would be sorted, packed, sold and shipped to northern markets. By the late 1930s it was clear that a new, larger farmers market was needed, and so state and federal support was solicited to build a new agricultural facility west of town. Despite opposition from the FEC Railway and downtown merchants, in October, 1939, the new Pompano State Farmers Market was opened. It is still operating at this site.

This is not the actual bouquet that Charlotte received. It is, however, representative of the flowers that started it all. The penta and crown of thorn plants, alas, are also not Charlotte's, exactly, but they - and the butterflies! - are exactly what can be found in a minimally tended South Florida yard.

SOUTH FLORIDA GROWERS: THIS IS YOUR MOMENT!

say they don’t enjoy a gift that involves flowers? On Monday afternoon, a colorful mixed bouquet showed up at my workplace. There was that brief moment in time where women held their breath as the delivery person announced the lucky delivery recipients’ name. Flowers make everything better.

Was it a birthday or an anniversary? Surely there was a special event requiring such an elaborate acknowledgement. I used to tell people do not send me flowers, because I thought it was wasteful to purchase something that would fade away so quickly.

Now I have to rethink those sentiments, as that beautiful vase of roses, sunflowers, and hydrangeas ended up being addressed to me. There was no reason for them, only a desire from the sender to assure that they would put a smile on my face during a particularly stressful week. So thank you for that. You know who you are. What is it about the appeal of flowers and spending endless moments in a garden?

Some feel it has a calming, or stress relieving effect when they dedicate hours to pruning trees or tending to vegetable gardens. Ask someone else, and the idea of pulling weeds or watering plants can be perceived as a never ending merry go round of futility…essentially having no appeal at all.

In my recent experience as a homeowner in South Florida, I’ve realized that there are no redeeming qualities to grass. During a careful analysis of the ratios associated to tending to it versus overall enjoyment of watching it grow, I’ve confirmed that is a losing proposition. After all, it’s a constant battle of fertilization, application of weed killer, and watering. And for what? The sole purpose for growing it is only to cut it down every two weeks.

I’ve also been told it's not great for the environment…this grass thing. So it only makes sense that I killed it all, and replaced it with flowering plants that attract

bees and butterflies and such. It’s not a perfect system, mind you. I still kill things. But those moments of life are what I’ve come to appreciate. My pentas attract monarchs. I’ve even seen an elusive hummingbird. In the end, it’s all about the flowers.

In the Sundquist household it’s about survival of the fittest. If you can survive the minimalist watering techniques and lack of nurturing, then you deserve to be here. My backyard is a plethora of prickly, spiny things that appreciate living in the harsh conditions that I create. If you can live, I buy more of you.

Crown of thorns? Lovely. Agave plants? Check. Succulents? Hens and Chicks have established their place. Oddly enough, even some orchids have jockeyed into respectable positions amongst the survivors. I respect you all.

Not a morning goes by that I don’t open the back door, turn on the hose, and water the plants that adorn the back patio.

As much as I want to say don’t waste money buying flowers…they are the true beauties of nature that still surround us. Whether they are cultivated by from seeds by an individual at home, or delivered as an unexpected gift, flowers from gardens come from someone’s heart. They take time, effort, and passion to be created in the environment in which we live.

To those of you that are growers in South Florida, this is your moment. Pat yourselves on the back. Enjoy the blooms that show up when no one else is there as a witness. You did it, you’ve made your surroundings a better place, and that’s all that matters.

“My transition from media to stage has been evolving since I was in theater and dance classes at an early age. So, it's been a natural progression to return to performing in any opportunity that presents itself. Acting is always a blessing for me because it's one of the purest forms of expression and challenges my ability to keep my audience's attention.”

When did you know without any doubt that you wanted to act?I knew at the age of four that the acting bug bit me. I wasn't exactly sure which medium it was going to but I knew I wanted to be involved with performances that emotionally moved people in the best way. What inspires you to act/perform?Life experiences inspire me to act. I enjoy playing characters that people either learn from, fall in love with or cause them to assess a situation in their own life and help them to live a better life. When did you realize you had reached your goals as an actor?I'm nowhere near reaching my goals in acting because I haven't done enough work to consider myself near a goal yet.

What was your favorite role to date and why?My favorite role to date was playing a character named Star in a theater production called FACES. The story was about four YOUNG thriving women in the prime of their lives who find out they have breast cancer and meet at a rehabilitation center in New York. My character was very much like me, a top rated media personality who had an award winning TV show but

when she found out she had breast cancer her world shattered. Instead of supporting her, TV executives at her network cancelled her show, her fiancé broke up with her and her closest friends faded. After so much stress and pain, Star's hair started to fall out from the chemotherapy treatments. Through the strength and friendships formed with the other women at the rehab center, Star learns that through faith and early detection she's been given a second chance at life. What do you enjoy most about your career? What I enjoy most about my career is the opportunity to entertain and educate my audience every day. Most importantly, my Grant My Wish Foundation is the most rewarding part of my work. The mission statement is "granting the wishes around the world one child at a time." I annually provide gifts during the holidays for less fortunate families and give children opportunities to accomplish their dreams in sports, performing arts and education. Can we expect a book from you?I've been asked that question a few times about if I I’ll ever publish a book, and the answer is yes. I'm working on a couple of my brand concepts for a literary project, but I'm sure my first book will be for children. What is the best way for your fans to know what you’re working on? Facebook/Twitter? Do you post for your own sites or do you have your assistants do the posts? The best way to stay informed on my multimedia movement is social media. My site is JeannieJones.com, Twitter and Instagram @TheJeannieShow and Facebook/TheJeannieJonesShow . I do have assistants that help with some of my posts, but I handle most of my content and I am the one who personally responds to questions and comments I receive on social media and emails because I think it's important to have direct contact with your audience as often as possible.Tell us something new, something bold that you’ve never told any other magazine…news tip :)You're getting a Jeannie Jones exclusive.
