A Year at Pool Issue 2

Over 26 million words read

in six weeks!

A huge congratulations to our year

7s and 8s who have been reading, read-

ing, reading on our Accelerated Reader

Every student in years 7 and 8 is

they then use an App on their iPad to

take a quiz to test their understanding of

the book. The students earn points for

the number of words that they’ve read

which they can then trade in for different

prizes.

Our Accelerated Reader Co-

ordinator, Miss Williams, said this about

the scheme this week:

“There is a real buzz about reading

across Key Stage 3. Earning points and

taking quizzes on the books they’ve

read is providing a really exciting chal-

lenge for the students.”

Congratulations to Years 7 and 8 who have read 967 books

since the start of term.

That’s over 26 million words!!

Computer Science With Yr 6

Miss Meakin delivered workshops to

a number of our local primary school

students this month.

The students worked alongside our

year 9s to investigate how the different

components of computers work.

The group were given computers to

take apart and identify the pieces of

hardware. They then worked together

to rebuild them.

Other year 6 students will be joining

us later in the year to learn writing code

and computer programming.

Mrs Raybould Joins Us In

English

We are thrilled to welcome Mrs Ray-

bould to the English Department. Mrs

Raybould particularly specialises in

teaching teenage fiction. Her favourite

author is Mal Peet. If you’re stuck for a

book she recommends reading ‘Tamar’

for the amazing twist at the end.

Year 7 Book Buzz

Year 7 Received their free

books as part of the national

‘Book Buzz’ scheme this

month

It was gifts all round for year 7 this

month when they received their free

book through the national ‘Book Buzz’

scheme which has been designed to

motivate reading at Key Stage 3.

Students were given the choice of a

free book from a carefully selected list

of 17 titles including fiction, non-fiction

and poetry. Once they’d selected their

books, they arrived the next week in an

array of large boxes that filled up the

entire English office for a day!

Below are some of the core titles that

the students could choose from:

Soldier Dog by Sam Angus (Macmillan)

Butterfly Summer by Anne-Marie Conway (Usborne)

After Tomorrow by Gillian Cross (Oxford University Press)

Dear Scarlett by Fleur Hitchcock (Nosy Crow)

Miss Groves Joins The History

Department

The History Department are delight-

ed to welcome Miss Groves to the His-

tory team.. Miss Groves is a Cold War

historian. She likes American History

and International Relations.

Reece Wins Gold Medal in British Taekwondo Championships

Congratulations to Reece Rowe in year 7 who has taken part in the Taekwondo British Championships and won a gold medal for ‘Heavyweight in Sparring’.

The championship involved com-petitors from all over Europe. Con-gratulations Reece, we look forward sharing your future success.

Cornish School Surf Championships

Congratulations to our students who took part in the Cornish School Surf Champion-ships which were held at Godrevy this month.

We sent a tem of 5 stand-up surfers and 5 body boarders to the county event. Despite challenging wave conditions, Molly Jackson and Luke Harper, pictured below, made it through to the finals of their heats in the under 14s category.
