G’ day

Its Autumn, which means the Poona Family Fishing Competition is here again. Your committee have been hard at work organising what we hope will be a terrific event. This year the profit goes towards the hall extensions. We have managed to get FCRC as our premier sponsor with Freedom Fishing and Road Tech Marine as major co-sponsors. The format will be similar to past years, with some extra family activities included. In the coming weeks we will be looking for volunteers to help run the event. Please make yourself known to a Committee member if you are willing to help out in any way. More about the FC later in this edition.

The FCRC’s community workshop covering the Poona Community Infrastructure Project and the Boating Facility Feasibility Study, was held on 29 February. Well over 150 residents participated in a well-run meeting that ensured everybody’s opinion was heard in a respectful manner. The key points to come out of the meeting, in my opinion were:

The number of people attending sent a clear message to our elected representatives, state and local, Council, DTMR and Archipelago that we care and are keen to have a say in the future of Poona,

The excellent suggestions and comments, both supporting and questioning the preliminary design, demonstrated that we know best what a boating facility in Poona should look like. I would be surprised if the next iteration of the design doesn’t incorporate some of our suggestions,

A strong argument was put for a pontoon to be included in the initial funding,

We are concerned that we have not been provided with an alternative if the current proposal was to be scrapped in coming years,

The Feasibility Study has not identified any “show stoppers”, The total estimated cost is $3.23 million including a 40% contingency, and There is still a lot of work around land tenure, cultural studies,

environmental studies and some design elements ahead of the budget process.

The presentations and the Feasibility Study will be made available on the Council website as well as on https://poonacommunity.com.au/poonaplanning.html. We are invited to provide further suggestions and comments to [email protected] (closing 31 March 2020). As usual, keep an eye on our website and Facebook page, but the best way to keep abreast of what is happening is to come to the General meeting 14 Mar 2020 at 2.00 pm. Bring a plate and stay for the after-meeting refreshments.

All welcome!

THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO

MEET & MIX WITH OTHERS

The Benefits of Volunteering There are five major benefits to you, your health and personal wellbeing. The following information has been sourced from a number of recognized organizations. More information can be found at the following https:psychologytoday.com/au/blog/the-third-age/201403/5-reasons-why-you-should-volunteer.

1. Volunteers live longer and are healthier. In fact volunteering in later life it is even more beneficial for one’s health than exercising and eating well.

You maintain physical function longer and have a more robust psychological

well-being, and live longer.

2. Volunteering establishes strong relationships. Despite all of the online connections that are available at our fingertips, people are lonelier now than

ever before. Working along side people who feel as strongly as you do about

supporting a particular cause creates a path to developing strong

relationships and friends.

3. Volunteering is good for your career. It is where you can build strong networks and leverage off other people you make relationships and friends

with.

4. It is also good for society. Many mission-driven organizations depend on and are successful when they have a strong volunteer workforce. A couple of

great examples are Social Service and Faith-Based organizations. Poona

Community Progress Association (PCPA) is our local organization that

strives for a better local society. There is also the sense of purpose. Although it is not well understood why volunteering provides such a profound health benefit, a key factor is assumed to be that volunteering serves to express and facilitate opportunities to carry out one’s sense of purpose. So if you want to stay healthy, live longer, establish strong relationships, build networks, live in a better society and increase your sense of purpose contact one of the PCPA committee members.

Tuan Toolara Feral Horse Public Safety Initiative Local residents may have noticed an increase in the frequency of feral horse sightings in road corridors in the area. The presence of feral horses in close proximity to roads has caused several recent collisions on Tin Can Bay Road and Cooloola Coast Roads that resulted in the immediate death of horses but fortunately resulted in no public injury.

To address this public safety issue, local land manager HQPlantations is leading the development of a feral horse management plan with the support of a multi-agency management committee. In addition to consulting the RSPCA and SEQ Brumby Association, HQPlantations would like to make sure it meets the road safety and horse welfare expectations of local communities.

INVITATION TO NOMINATE FOR THE COMMUNITY REFERENCE GROUP

To facilitate this, we are inviting six local representatives to join a reference group to contribute community perspectives to decision-making in preparation of the plan and its implementation by the management committee. We are seeking a mix of people who can represent local communities on road safety, animal welfare and positions in between.

To nominate to join the community reference group, register at https://hqp.engagementhub.com.au/feral-horse-public-safety-initiative and complete the nomination form. We recommend you use Chrome or Safari web browsers to access the project page as it isn’t fully functional when using Internet Explorer.

Nominations close at 10am on 9 March and a decision will be made by 12 March, 2020.

If you have any questions about this public safety initiative, please use the contact page

on the website or email [email protected]

FISHING REPORT

THANK YOU TO

FREEDOM FISHING

95 Bazaar Street

Maryborough Phone:

4121 4621

Well yet again the weather has not the best for us fisho’s, fingers crossed for some clear days ahead, just remember the fish are still out there feeding, and it’s only going to improve. That’s have a look at this week’s fishing report.

Ok obviously with all the freshwater runoff, our fresh water species have been a popular target, Flicking soft plastic shad tail for bass has been the go around Lenthals Dam, Tinanna and Teddington. Barra are also being taking at Lenthals on Gold Bombers and similar hard body lures. The Burrum is another hot spot, Barra, Jack and Grunter all on the chew. And plenty of Black and Silver bream, they love this stirred up water, lots of water turn and food available, and you’ll find the fish will be more aggressive and have more confidence feeding on overcast days.

Patches of prawns have been reported around Burrum, Tuan and River Heads, and will only continue to grow and multiple over the coming weeks so it’s time to prepare your cast nets.

The Great Sandy Straits is a mixed bag at the moment. We have had reports of grunter and cod over near the island. The flats are fishing well for whiting and there are lots of flathead about. The Jack are still on the bite up the creeks, they don’t mind the influx of fresh. Don’t forget your castnet as the prawns are moving in.

The inshore reefs have produced some good quality fish this week. Black Spot Venus Tusk fish are top of the hit list with anglers having a ball on these hard running fish. 110lb Scheinder fishing line on a heavy duty hand reel with a nice fresh crab for bait has been the weapons of choice .

The Mary is running pretty fresh but we have had reports of Barra around Grahams Creek.

Lets check out this weeks brag board.

First up is Tanyon who took advantage of

a break in the weather, landing these

beautiful Black Spot Venus Tusk fish.

Damo is very happy with his Mangrove

Jack he caught up the creek.

Jax Rossiter had a great day fishing with

his dad, a fishing star in the making for sure.

Nice flathead mate.
