About pop music

• Pop is an abbreviation of ‘popular’. The type of music that is popular

changes over time with the popular fashion and trends.

• Some say the genre pop was created in the 1950s originating from

Rock and Roll. However it could be a creation of the 20th century

and only came about because of the rise in radios.

• Pop music is described as unforgettable, commercially friendly and

marketable, including vocals, lyrics, and instruments creating a

catchy chorus or verse.

The 50s

• 1954-Elvis Presley, known as the king of Rock and Roll. Was one of the best-selling solo artists in the history of Pop music. When Evlis was 13 years old his music career began. In 1954, he started to work with Sam Phillips who was the owner of ‘Sun Records’.

• Late 1950s- English rock group ‘The Beatles’ who were known in the decade 1960-70, this decade was dominated by The Beatles with their first single ‘Love Me Do’ released in 1962.

• 1958-In this year Michael Jackson and Madonna were born, these are two of the most famous people in the pop industry so far.

The 60s

• The "British Invasion” was the name given to the period of time in

the 60s. During this many British rock bands and pop artists found

mainstream success in the USA and also worldwide.

• The Beatles broke into the US music scene in 1963, but only

became very popular in 1964 after appearing on the Ed Sullivan

Show and after the release of their first single.

The 70s

• According to Mademan.com, the biggest selling artist in the 70s was Elvis Presley, even though he passed away in 1977 the following top 10 after Elvis, in order were Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Chicago, The Rolling Stones, Bee Gees, John Denver, Paul McCartney, and Bob Dylan.

• The Beatles released their final album ‘Let it Be’ in 1970. But other bands emerged like Blondie who topped the charts in 1979 with ‘Heart of Glass’.

• The Jackson 5’s ‘ABC’ was released in 1970 this starting Michael Jacksons career giving him the title of ‘King of Pop’.

The 80s

• The 80s introduced dance music and new wave.

• The 80s saw a rise in digital recording .

• 80s stars such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Rick Astley and

Madonna.

• Madonna was the most successful women in the 80s, her videos

were always shown on MTV.
