From the desk of

Father Flores St. Nicholas was a bishop in the very early years of the Church; he was born in 270 and died in 343. St. Nicholas is loosely the model for the later myth and person of Santa Claus; in fact, Santa Claus is still often known as “Jolly Ole St. Nick.” St. Nicholas was a bishop in the Greek city of Myrna which today is a part of Turkey. He lived in an inter-esting historical time for the Church. He was present at the Council of Nicaea, from which we get the Creed, and he lived in a time when there was still persecution of the Church and even suffered imprisonment for his faith.

He is perhaps most famous for the gold he secretly gave to a poor man on three different occasions for the dowries of his three daughters. Without a proper dowry it was difficult in those days to get a young lady into a good marriage. Often without a dowry a young lady could be sold into slavery. It is said that he tossed the gold into the man’s house at night through an open win-dow and that at least on one occasion it landed in a stocking hanging to dry from the mantle of the fireplace. St. Nicholas gained fame due to these stories and others; in fact, he is also known as St. Nicholas the wonder worker. His association with Christmas comes in the proximity of his feast day, which is today, December 6, but also because of his generosity. The gift giving with which he is associated is simply a reflection of God’s greatest gift, which is the gift of His Son.

St. Nicholas captures the imagination because what he did is an example that is easy to follow for those who belong to Jesus. It is a joyful thing to be able to give gifts, and any-one who has given can attest that there is as much more joy in giving than there is in re-ceiving. St. Nicholas exemplifies this, and he sets the pattern for us. Yes, we can and should give gifts to our families and friends at this time of year, but we must not forget those in need who are not related to us or whom we know personally. St. Nicholas gave to a family that was not his own but that had great need, and we can do the same. This time of year there is a lot of giving because there are so many organizations and people who wish to help those in need; in fact, we will be scaling back our own giving this coming Christmas due to the very generous response of the community to assist those in need. Our goal will shift to continue to offer aid dur-ing the less active times of the year. The winter comes hardest after Christmas when people who are in need seem to need more help. Please remember this during your gift giving this year and if you cannot give at Christmas time, you can give in the weeks and months that follow. We are also aware of our friends in Honduras who have suffered much from at least two powerful hurricanes late in the season. Many people have lost their homes and livelihoods in a country with very limited social services. This convinces me even more that God has placed them in our path so that we can assist them. God is giving us the opportunity of joy by helping those in need including our friends in Honduras. This is the great example that St. Nicholas leaves us as he is known for possessing the joy and happiness that come from being able to give, especially to those in need. St. Nicholas was able to give because he was aware that his own life and faith were gifts from God, and we can do the same. Happy Second Sunday of Advent and happy Feast of St. Nicholas.

In Jesus and Mary, Father Flores

BECOMING CATHOLIC (RCIA)

Please contact the parish office to set a time to visit.

God bless Dennis & Storma Edelbrock, who celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony here recently. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her.” Ephesians 5:25

CONFESSION TO A PRIEST

The Church says that confessing serious sins to a priest in the Sacrament of Penance must be done “at least once a year.” (CCC 1457) Many people ask the question, “Why do I need to confess my sins to a priest? Why can’t I just go di-rectly to Jesus?” The answer is simple. In the Sacrament of Penance, we do go directly to Jesus! You see, in the Sacra-ment of Penance (also called Confession or Reconciliation), the priest is acting “in persona Christi.” This is a Latin phrase that means “in the person of Christ.” This means that Christ is truly present in the sacrament in the person of the priest. The priest is conformed in a special way to Christ through the sacrament of Holy Orders. Thus, only a priest can hear con-fessions and offer absolution. Many parishes will have Pen-ance services during Lent and Advent. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraph 1482) says this: “Here, the per-sonal confession of sins and individual absolution are inserted into a liturgy of the word of God with readings and a homily, an examination of conscience conducted in common, and communal request for forgiveness, the Our Father and a thanksgiving in common.” Know that these Penance services do not offer general absolution. Individual confession is still required. While general absolution can be administered in very rare cases, the Catechism (paragraph 1484) says, “Individual, integral confession and absolution remain the only ordinary way for the faithful to reconcile themselves with God and the Church, unless physical or moral impossibility excus-es from this kind of confession. Personal confession is thus the form most expressive of reconciliation with God and with the Church.” For further study: Catechism of the Catholic Church 1422-1498

† Be Purposeful † Purposefully Catholic:

The Attributes of God, Part 5 God is Love As much as his love for us is as that of a father for his children, it is also that of a spouse for his beloved:

“And in that day, says the Lord, you will call me, ‘My hus-band… And I will betroth you to me for ever; I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord’” (Hos 2:16, 19-20). The pow-er and intensity of God’s love can be compared to that of the love shared between lovers whose hearts beat as one: “I am by beloved’s, and his de-sire is for me” (Song 7:10). Be-cause he is love, he desires what is best for us. But his love does not stop there. The power of his love reaches beyond his desire for our happiness to the actual attainment of it: “In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins” (1 Jn 4:10). He has secured our happiness and lasting peace through the death of his Son. The only limitation to his power is our freedom. We can still refuse his love and the happiness he offers, but he never stops loving us. His love is forever, even for those in Hell whose anguish is the re-sult of God’s love impacting the hearts of those who have rejected him. Faith in God Believing in the one true God who is transcendent, al-mighty, gracious, merciful and loving has many conse-quences in our lives. Because of his almighty power and sovereignty, faith means we have to put him in the first place in our lives and serve him. Because of his truth, it means we have to walk in the light of truth, recognizing the beauty and fullness it brings to life. And lastly, be-cause of his mercy and love, it means we have to trust in his providence even during suffering and trials (Phil 4:4, 6-7).

December 6, 2020 2nd Sunday of Advent “Prepare the way of the Lord…” MARK 1:3 We are all called to live a holy life. We are all called to invite others to live holy lives. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts, puts us on the path to holiness and is an example for others to be holy, too.
