Marvin wants to be popular, but he’s constantly bullied by the “cool” rats who label

him a “geek” and “loser.” To escape from the continual badgering, Marvin retreats

into his science books and the fantasy world he’s created. Here he can have lots of

adventures and be the hero. In this story, Marvin creates the space adventure of a

lifetime! He takes a trip to the surface of the moon on his homemade rocket where he

meets a strange cast of misfit creatures. On his journey, Marvin learns of infinite peril,

and awesome beauty.

The question is...will Marvin the Moon Mouse make his dreams come true in real life?

Will he get the glory and acceptance he craves?

A combination of art, theatre, and technology, Lightwire performances tell a story

with four dancers and glow-in-the-dark puppets laced with electroluminescent wire

(EL wire). The story of Moon Mouse is told solely through movement, music, and

puppetry, without words, meaning you have to use your imagination to understand

what is happening on stage!

Interesting Facts for Students The Moon is much smaller than the Earth and is our only natural satellite. It is airless,

waterless, and lifeless.

From the Earth we can only see one side of the Moon because the other side is always

turned away from us. Photographs from space show a similar pitted and scarred surfaces on

both “faces.”

If you look at the Moon when it is nearly full you can see the dark areas known as the “seas.”

They are actually huge expanses of smooth dark lava.

Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year.

Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. 1 in 10 students

drop out because of repeated bullying.

90% of 4th through 8th graders report being victims of bullying.

71% of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school.

Bullying can be verbal or physical.

As boys age, they are less and less likely to feel sympathy for victims of bullying. In fact, they

are more likely to add to the problem than solve it.

The ancient Greek god Phosphorus was known as the bringer of light. He was often

evoked in reference to Venus when the planet was visible before dawn. Phosphor is what

coats electroluminescent wires.

All glow-in-the-dark products contain phosphors. Phosphor is a substance that radiates

visible light after being energized. The three places where we most commonly see

phosphors are in a TV screen, computer monitor, and fluorescent lights.

Vocabularyally—a person who is on your side or helps you in a situation

atmosphere— the whole mass of air surrounding the earth or any other celestial body

bullying—to treat abusively through words or actions

electroluminescent—glows in the dark when exposed to an electric current

empathy—the act of sharing feelings of another, especially in sorrow or trouble

harass—to bother or upset someone repeatedly through words and actions

joints—a place where two things or parts are joined

odyssey—a long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune

target—a person picked on or bullied by others

tolerate—to let someone be different

History of Puppetry While the precise birth date of puppets is unknown, puppetry dates back over 3,000 years. Probably originating in Egypt, puppets are mentioned in writing as early as 422 B.C.E. Puppetry is also part of popular culture in India, Indonesia, Japan, and Europe.

Types of Puppetry marionette (a string puppet)—the puppets are suspended by strings from a horizontal bar held in the puppeteer’s hand. By manipulating the tilt of the bar, puppeteers make the puppet move.

hand puppetry—the puppets are

controlled by the puppeteer’s hand fitting directly inside of the puppet.

two-man puppetry—the larger puppets are controlled by two puppeteers: one operating the head and the other operating the body.

carnival (body puppetry)—the puppets are worn as a full-body suit. These kinds of puppets are seen in Lightwire Theater’s shows, street spectacles, sporting games, and even Disney’s The Lion King.

bunraku puppetry—based in Japan, a life-sized wooden puppet is illuminated by focused light. Even though it’s dark, puppeteers can be seen by the audience.

shadow puppetry—a paper cutout on a stick is illuminated onto a piece of white fabric, producing shadows that are viewed by the audience and allow for puppeteers to be hidden.

Lightwire Theater’s PuppetsElectroluminescent wire (EL wire) is very thin copper wire coated in a phosphor that glows when an electric current is applied to it. Unique from other stringed lights, it produces a continuous stream of unbroken visible light. The wire is very thin and therefore very flexible, making it a perfect material for designing puppets.

The puppets are made from struts and joints and then covered with black cloth lined in EL wire. The puppeteers wear a battery back that sends an electric current through the EL wire, illuminating it for the performance. The puppeteers wear black so only the puppets’ EL wire will be seen during the performance.

2. Ask the students what they think Marvin was feeling at key points in his adventure.

3. Introduce the Color Wheel of Emotion.

4. List the colors that are most often used to describe certain emotions such as, “I was green with envy.” What others can they come up with (“sadness” as a “blue color” or “anger” as a “red color”)?

5. Ask the students to paint, in sequence, the emotions Marvin experienced. Explain that the painting can take any form.

6. Have the students retell the story as they did in Step #1, this time using the colors, adjectives , and emotions to enhance the story.

7. Discuss how the story changed with these additions.

Students will:

• be introduced to color representations as emotions;• use the colors to retell the story of the emotions Marvin experienced during the show.

Assessment

• Students can paint their emotions in general, through a typical day or a specific event. • Encourage the students to think of more emotions and create their own color wheels that represent their percep-tions.• Have the students divide their paper into sections, and then have students color each a different color. Have the artist tell a story based on the emotions depicted. Or, have the class take turns with telling a story about the paint-ing with each taking a section and continuing where the other left off. • Listen to music and have the students express their interpretation of the music through color. Try several different genres of music. Discuss. • Discuss the colors used in the puppets of Moon Mouse. How did they help tell the story?

• Accuracy of student’s representations of Marvin’s emotional experience. • Note: this is a subjective activity so assessments can be loosely interpreted.

In Your Own Words Often, the world around the poet is what influences his or her work. After watching Moon Mouse, A Space Odyssey, think about your world and how it influences you. Poets, musicians, and slam artists choose something that was impactful to them. Write your own poem, lyrics to a song, or haiku about an issue that is important to you such as: bullying, peer pressure, prejudice, hunger, homelessness, divorce, global warming, or education.

DIY Lights with EL Wire (Grades 4-6) Students can make their own Electroluminescent Wire (El Wire) wreaths with this quick and simple activity. This website also offers tips and modification ideas for the project.

The Dreamcatchers Teaching GuidesBy their nature, the arts engage young minds in learning through observing, listening, creating, and moving, while offering various ways to acquire information and act on it in a dynamic world. They also offer a natural way to differentiate instruction through multiple modes of representation, expression, and engagement. Additionally, the arts are an authentic context in which students identify and solve problems, reflect, and create meaning. The Dreamcatchers help students embody the lessons and take-action on what they have learned. These guides introduce students to what they will see on stage, provide background information, a basic vocabulary associated with the show, fun facts, vetted resources, and activities providing a connection between the arts and classroom curriculum.

Popejoy HallPopejoy Hall is New Mexico’s premier nonprofit venue for the performing arts and entertainment. Our mission is to provide access to the performing arts for all New Mexicans.

House Policies & EtiquetteThe inside of a theatre where the audience sits is called a “house.” To get along, have fun, and enjoy the show, there are rules to follow. Schooltime is a wonderful opportunity to learn how good behavior in a live theater is different from watching television. For guidelines to practice with your class and chaperones, including safety, special needs, food and drink, backpacks, cell phones, photography, recordings, and more, go to schooltimeseries.com/house-policies.
