The PoplarsResidential Care
At the Poplars, our aim is to create an environment that promotes service users’ rights in making choices. We understand the importance of promoting the independence of service users whilst delivering an individual care plan that will meet their needs and requirements.
Opened in 2000, Poplars is located in Selly Park in Birmingham. The home is located on the outskirts of the city centre and is near to the University of Birmingham, meaning that there is a range of opportunities available for service users.
Indoor spaceThe property provides a home for five service users, with the main building consisting of four bedrooms and
a self-contained annexe offering a further bedroom. The property has a variety of communal areas including a lounge, dining room and breakfast kitchen. This allows our service users to socialise, develop existing friendships and create new friendships, which is one of our key principles at the Poplars.
Outdoor spaceOur large garden allows our service users to feel a sense of freedom and gives them the opportunity to explore horticulture and grow their own plants and flowers.

ActivitiesThe Poplars offers a variety of day services for its service users, meaning that each individual has the opportunity to be involved in activities that they enjoy. We provide in-house activities as well as community activities to encourage integration within the local community. Service users are also given the opportunity to take part in college courses and are fully supported and encouraged in their decision to do so. Courses attended by service users in the past have included cookery, gardening, literacy and computer studies.
EnvironmentAlthough our days at the Poplars are based upon a predictable and structured routine, within this structure there is a great deal of emphasis on flexibility to accommodate individual choices. We follow individual care plans for each service user. These care plans ensure that the specific needs of each service user are being catered for. All care plans are regularly reviewed with a formal review taking place every
6-12 months, allowing service users to discuss all aspects of everyday life at the Poplars with staff to ensure that their needs are being catered for.
Staff teamAt the Poplars, we have a qualified and experienced staff team who are dedicated to providing the best care possible for adults with autism. All members of staff have undergone a supervised induction period, regular supervision from senior members of staff and a thorough introduction to the service’s policies and procedures concerning care plans, health and safety, equality and challenging behaviour. The members of staff at the Poplars work hard to ensure that service users have as much control over their own lives as possible and that they are getting the most out of their experience at the home.
