Welcome to St. Rose
Welcome to Historic St. Rose of Lima Church! As
you can see, St. Rose is a magnificent house of God.
It was built a century ago by the Irish Community of
Quincy at the price of many sacrifices. This church, a
historical landmark of the city of Quincy, is
considered as representative of the Venetian Gothic
style: a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine
styles. Before the church was reopened in the fall of
2008, 3 marble altars were installed as well as a
matching altar rail and pulpit. The altars were
consecrated by the Bishop of our diocese, Bishop
Thomas Paprocki on June 10, 2012.
One of the main fixtures of this church is the amazing
collection of stained glass windows (1912)
characteristic of the Munich Pictorial Style. We have
begun their restoration and the first phase of the work
was done in the fall of 2012. With your help, the
project should be completed by the end of 2014. If
you wish to be part of this project, contact the rectory.
A brochure explaining the project of restoration is
available.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but
a chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member
of your local Catholic parish. To join, just give us a
call. After both Sunday Masses, the community meets
in the hall to socialize. Members and Visitors are
welcome! Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Desk of the Chaplain: 5th Sunday after Pentecost The Public Discussion on “Same Sex Marriage”…
(…) The words of Jesus are as true today as when he spoke them
to the Pharisees: “Have you not read that he who made them
from the beginning made them male and female, and said ‘For
this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined
to his wife, and the two shall become one’? So they are no longer
two but one” (Mt 19: 4-6). (…)
Nonetheless, the legal creation of what is naturally impossible is
not inevitable. Cultural change can be redirected so that the long
road to obtain respect that has been traveled by many
homosexually oriented persons can be maintained without
destroying the institution of natural marriage. Since the
difference between men and women is different from racial
difference, same-sex marriage is not a civil rights issue. A newly
invented civil right cannot be used to destroy a moral good, lest
society itself go into decline. (…)
We should be concerned as well about the State overreaching its
proper authority, which is limited to the civil order. Neither the
church nor the state “own” the institution of marriage. The state
has a right to supervise but not to redefine an institution it did not
create. This tendency for the government to claim for itself
authority over all areas of human experience flows from the
secularization of our culture. If God cannot be part of public
life, then the state itself plays God. There are many paths to
total state control of life — fascism, totalitarianism,
communism. In the United States, the path is labeled
“protection of individual rights.”
We should be concerned about the role of Catholics in public
life. Catholic politicians are complicit in secularizing our
society when they reduce their religious beliefs to private
opinions and promise that their religious faith will not
influence their public life. (…) Political figures who still claim
to be Catholic but who systematically ignore Catholic moral and
social teaching in public life cut themselves off from the
communities that once nurtured them. How should faithful
Catholics distinguish political pragmatism from betrayal?
Are we to have a religious test for public office that excludes
Catholics serious about their faith from appointment to federal
judgeships? Are Catholics who will not perform abortions to be
excluded from medical school? Are Catholics to be unwelcome
in the editorial offices of major newspapers, in the entertainment
world, or on university faculties unless they put their faith aside?
In short, what began as a political device to get elected to office
in a Protestant society can be used more broadly to exclude
Catholics from any position of influence in public life. If
Catholics are to be closeted and marginalized in a secularized
society, Catholic parents should prepare their children to be
farmers, carpenters and craftsmen, small business people and
workers in service industries, honorable occupations that do not,
however, immediately impact public opinion. Is this the future?
That’s a concern.
Pray for the public conversation in our state as the debate on
“same-sex marriage” continues. Francis Cardinal George,

NEWS
Departures & Arrivals: Fr. Thomas Fritschen, F.S.S.P., is
leaving St. Rose and will be replaced by Fr. Robert
Fromageot, F.S.S.P., around the first of July. We wish God’s
speed to Fr. Fritschen and thank him for his ministry at St.
Rose. Fr. Fromageot is already a familiar face for many of
you as he came to St. Rose in June 2012 to help us celebrate
our centennial. He was the choir director on that momentous
day.
Our condolences go out to Stan Neisen for the loss of his
mother Rosemary, who passed away on June 9th. In your
kindness, please pray for the repose of Rosemary Neisen's
soul. Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and let perpetual
light shine upon her.

A Message from the Ladies of Charity: For over 60 years,
the members of the Ladies of Charity of Quincy have sought
to follow the example of co-founders, St. Vincent De Paul and
St. Louis de Marillac, in giving to those in need. During the
last fiscal year, 5,161 food orders, 86,734 clothing items, and
over 65,000 household and miscellaneous items were
distributed. This represents 29,912 people served, 602 of
whom were new sign-ups.
It is only through your generous donations of goods and
monetary gifts that the Ladies are able to continue to serve
such a large number of people throughout the area. Thank
you so much for your generosity during this past year!
The Ladies of Charity operates entirely with volunteers, and is
in need of several more helpers, particularly at the Center at
4th & State. If you have 2 or more hours per week or per
month to donate to this worthy cause, please call Jane Haas at
224-3030 or 257-0533 for more information.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
The "Fortnight for Freedom" begins June 21 and ends July 4.
It echoes an observance held last summer to protest the
mandate handed down by the federal Department of Health
and Human Services requiring all employers to offer
insurance coverage of abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives
and sterilization. The mandate went into effect on Aug. 1,
2012 for most employers, and will be implemented for
religious organizations on Aug. 1, 2013.
The nation is awaiting an additional threat to religious
freedom by the end of June, when the U.S. Supreme Court is
expected to rule on two same-sex marriage cases: the
constitutionality of California's Proposition 8, and the federal
Defense of Marriage Act.
The Fortnight kicks off with Archbishop William Lori of
Baltimore celebrating an evening Mass June 21 at the Basilica
of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
in Baltimore. It will conclude with a noon Mass July 4 to be
celebrated by Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington at the
Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
in the nation's capital.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has created a
special web page --- www.fortnight4freedom.org ---
containing prayer resources, homilies and fact sheets on
religious liberty.
Wednesday, July 3, 2013, 12 P.M. Noon. Fortnight for
Freedom Prayer Rally. Please plan to join Bishop Paprocki
for a prayer service in support of Religious Liberty. Location:
Lincoln Statue at the Springfield Capitol South 2nd Street &
East Capitol Avenue. “The purpose of this effort is to issue a
nationwide call to defend religious liberty and to urge the laity
to work to protect the first freedom of the bill of Rights.”
Bishop Thomas John Paprocki.
Sunday, July 14: Second Collection for Quincy Catholic
Charities. St. Rose donated over $500 to QCC in 2012.
Saturday, August 17, 2013 First Diocesan Humanae Vitae
Mass & Dinner with Bishop Thomas John Paprocki at the
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Springfield,
