MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE—This 1966-1973 TV series chronicled the missions of a team of secret American government agents known as the Impossible Missions Force. A hallmark of the series shows team leader Jim Phelps receiving his instructions on a tape that then explodes or dissolves, accompanied by the iconic theme music by Argentine composer Lalo Schifrin. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to applaud loudly and cheer vociferously. As always, should you or any member of the audience be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This program will self-destruct in five seconds.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND—The score for this film was created by director Tim Burton's long-time collaborator Danny Elfman, who has been nominated for 4 Academy Awards and 10 Grammy Awards. Elfman lends a magical, whimsical and imaginative twist to the 150-year-old story about a girl who falls down a rabbit hole and into a fantasy world that grows ―curiouser and curiouser.‖ Danny Elfman has written close to 50 film scores, including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, Batman,

Spider-Man, Edward Scissorhands, and Men in Black.

AVATAR—James Horner is an American composer noted for employing choral and Celtic musical elements in his film scores. His score to the 1997 film Titanic remains the best selling orchestral film soundtrack of all time. When director James Cameron began work on

his 2009 film about a paraplegic Marine sent to the moon Pandora to interact with a race of 10-foot tall blue-skinned humanoids, he turned again to James Horner. About the film, Horner said, ―Avatar has been the most difficult film I have worked on... When you see for the first time the [alien] world, you get right away the scale of what‘s

going on. It is like the difference between hi-def and listening to a mono cassette.‖ To accommodate this depth in his music, Horner created ―a world that uses a tremendous amount of color—colors that we haven‘t heard before… For example, you‘ll hear a small bit of orchestral music, then three or four ethnic instruments will play, and then some-body will sing, and then the orchestra will do something, and it has to all be seamless.‖

THE MUSIC MAN—When snake oil salesman ―Professor‖ Harold Hill arrives in fictional River City, Iowa, the town‘s got ―Trouble with a Captial T.‖ Hill promises to teach the local boys to play in band, by means of his ―Think Method.‖ Although Marian Paroo (―Marian the Librarian‖) sees through his act, Harold wins her over by helping her little brother Tommy, whose lisp keeps him from playing with the other children. Just as Hill‘s angry pursuers arrive to denounce him at a meeting in the high school gym, Tommy enters as a drum major, followed by the River City Boys‘ Band. Despite the band‘s complete lack of musical training, the townsfolk hear the fanfare of a full brass and woodwind band, with ―Seventy-Six Trombones.‖ The Music Man was a Broadway smash and ran for 1,375 performances. It won 5 Tony Awards, including Best Author, Composer and Lyricist for creator Meredith Willson.

TRANSCENDENT JOURNEY—About this piece by American composer Rossano Galante, one piccoloist wrote, ―For Musicians out there, ever get that feeling when you‘re playing—tingles all over and the weird flutter in your heart—like you just can‘t believe you‘re involved in a song with so much emotion? Yep. That‘s this piece.‖ Galante is primarily a film score composer whose credits as composer or orchestrator include Big Fat Liar, Scary Movie 2, The Tuxedo, and Tuesdays With Morrie.

THE INCREDIBLES—

Michael Giacchino is one of today‘s most prolific and successful TV & film composers. His scores have earned

him many music awards, including an Academy Award for Best Original Score for Up, in 2010. His score for the 2004 animated feature The Incredibles earned him two Grammy nominations, including a Best Instrumental Composition award for ―The Incredits,‖ which prompted movie-goers worldwide to remain in their seats, until the screen went dark. The film follows the adventures of a family of super-heroes living incognito as part of the government‘s Superhero Relocation Program… until a supervillain forces them to don a new set of skin-tight costumes and save the world, this time without capes: ―Stratogale, April 23rd, ‗57: cape caught in a jet turbine! Meta-Man: express elevator! Dynaguy: snagged on takeoff! Splashdown: sucked into a vortex! No capes!‖ The film was a huge hit for Walt Disney and the Pixar Animation Studios. The soundtrack‘s upbeat jazz sound was a departure in style not only for Giacchino but for Pixar, which had previously relied on Randy and Thomas Newman for all of its films. THE FREE LANCE—Famed composer/conductor John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) is best known for his many military and patriotic marches; he wrote 136 of them. However, he also wrote several light, cheerful operettas. Tonight‘s selection was based on themes from his 1906 operetta about antihero Sigmund Lump, a clever goatherd who hires himself out as a ―free lance‖ for the opposing armies of fictional Braggadocia and Graftiana. Lump maneuvers his forces so that neither side can win, and then declares himself emperor of both nations. The trio section of the march is from the operetta‘s song ―On to Victory;‖ the Free Lance march is also known by that name.

OVERTURE TO CANDIDE—Leonard Bernstein‘s operetta Candide is based on the novella by French Enlightenment writer Voltaire. The Overture incorporates tunes from the operetta‘s songs "The Best of All Possible Worlds," "Battle Music," "Oh, Happy We," and "Glitter and Be Gay," as well as melodies composed specifically for the overture. The music captures the spirit of Voltaire‘s work, which concerns a young man, Candide (or ―Naïve‖) living a sheltered life and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor, Pangloss (―All-talk‖). The novella follows Candide's slow, painful disillusionment, as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. Voltaire concludes with Candide advocating an enigmatic precept: "We must tend our own garden." It took the genius of Bernstein to set music to this heady mix of comedy and philosophy. In his Candide overture‘s ―Battle Music‖ section, one hears echoes of Voltaire‘s words: "Nothing could be smarter, more splendid, more brilliant, better drawn up than two armies. Trumpets, fifes, oboes, drums, cannons formed a harmony such as has never been heard in inferno."

FESTIVE OVERTURE, Op. 96—The Festive Overture in A major was written by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1954 for a concert commemorating the 37th anniversary of the Bolshevik Socialist revolution known as Red October. Shostakovich was contacted shortly before the concert and, amazingly, finished the composition in three days, just in time for the performance. A challenging and exciting piece that finishes with a rousing coda, the Festive Overture was featured in the 1980 Summer Olympics, the Olympiad better known as the games boycotted by the USA.

THE PENNY-WHISTLE SONG—A favorite of Pops concerts across the globe, Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) was an American composer of short, light concert pieces, many of which were introduced by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. Renowned film composer and 19th Boston Pops Conductor John Williams described Leroy Anderson as "one of the great American masters of light orchestral music.‖ Anderson‘s Penny Whistle Song was an immensely popular tune in the 1950s, and it has made its way into modern playlists as a cell phone ringtone.

MY FAIR LADY is a musical based on playwright George Bernard Shaw‘s Pygmalion, written in 1912. In it Professor Henry Higgins bets that he can train Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle in manners and elocution, and pass her off as a proper lady. After Shaw‘s death, prolific songwriters Rodgers and Hammerstein tried converting the play into a musical, but declared the project impossible. Not until the 1950s did lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe take on the challenge. Their collaboration resulted in one of the most successful musicals ever, plus several Billboard Top 100 hits, including On the Street Where You Live, I Could Have Danced All Night, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, and Get Me to the Church on Time.

BLUE SHADES—Frank Ticheli‘s Blue Shades is a fun, jazzy piece that is very popular with wind bands. Ticheli is a Louisiana native now working as a Professor of Composition at USC. His music has been described as being ―optimistic and thoughtful‖ (Los Angeles Times), ―lean and muscular‖ (New York Times), and ―crafted with impressive flair and an ear for striking instrumental colors‖ (South Florida Sun-Sentinel).

SAMOHI CONCERT BANDS 24

We asked a few long-time volunteers to share their thoughts on the Samohi Band.

Vitamin Anita Squier, the Food Goddess: ―I have been involved in the marching band for six years, with three kids...and I have two seniors, Hannah and Jake Squier. The music program at Samo is amazing.‖

Vitamin Bob Keisling: I have enjoyed the privilege of participating as a volunteer for the Marching Band, Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble at SAMO. It was especially gratifying for me to be part of the Percussion Ensemble's 1st year's season and watch the unit soar. Thanks to Terry Sakow, Mike Corrigan, Jeremy and Andy I got to be part of the incredible music program at SAMO for four years and leave with fond memories that will last me a lifetime. Nothing can compare to the teamwork and leadership qualities that my daughter Marissa learned as part of the SAMO Music program and the friendships and memories she will take with her as she heads off to college.

Vitamin Dobecks (Chuck & Sharon): ―After three students each participating all four years in the band, starting in 1999, it is time to graduate. We‘ve attended as many competitions and foot-ball games as our work schedule and energy would allow. The highlights were serving pizza, pluming and de-pluming the hats, collecting and boxing the hats, pushing equipment on and off the field, and of course, enjoying endless renditions of the field show music, football game standards and band versions of pop tunes. We even followed the band to London as ―parent add-ons‖ and enjoyed our last trip to Disneyland as bus chaperones and the chosen back stage crew. Behind the scenes, we put in many, many hours accounting for all of the funds, and look forward to passing the baton to the new treasurer. We enjoyed launching the band buttons and hope they promote spirit and humor and help commemorate the field shows and bandisms. We will miss the camaraderie with our fellow band parents and instructors doing shared work for common goals. We salute all of the other hard-working current, graduating and post-graduate parents who continue to donate their time, talent and expertise to keep the band playing.‖

Vitamin Leah Moore, Co-President, Communications, Marching Band Chair, and proud Mom!: ―My daughter has followed the music since the 4th grade, and I have been close behind figuring it out, as we went along. When she hit Samo she grew wings and flew. The music program has given more back to us than I could ever give. My participation in the leadership of the Band Parents Association has been an amazing experience that I will always cherish.

Vitamin Helen Weary: ―My daughter Taylor took up the flute in 3rd grade, and has been auditioning and participating in every honor group, festival, and competition ever since, with me cheering her on and savoring the music. When Taylor entered Samohi as a freshman in 2007, I threw myself into the Samohi Band program with gusto. The people were friendly, funny, hard-working, and a joy to be with. When no one stepped up to be President in 2008, Leah and I warily took on the responsibility of Co-Presidents, and we haven't stopped since. It has been a wild ride. That was the year the Marching Band made the trip to London to march in the New Year's Day Parade, and we raised over $100,000. During 2008-'09 the Band also underwent a major reorganization, and the old ship had to be steered to new shores. I participated in all the meetings with the administration, directors, other arts groups, and music parents to create a new vision for all the arts groups at Samohi. I was also on the hiring committee over the summer that interviewed Band Director candidates and ultimately hired Mike Corrigan, our wonderful new Lead Band Director. Along with Terry Sakow, who has led the Band for over 20 years, his mandate from Dr. Pedroza was to "bring the Band to the next level," and we are definitely on our way! The awards and trophies for all the groups are testimony. The Band itself has new bylaws and mission statement also, and had some birthing pains to get to its new ideation. We have been the Bridge between the Old and the New during our 3 year tenure of leadership. We drew upon the vast reservoir of experience and knowledge to deal with the practicalities of running the various aspects of the band program, and had a vision of our own. We made it our mission to be more inclusive and informative to all band families and parents: Marching Band, Concert Bands, Jazz Bands, Color Guard, and Percussion. I hope I have left the Band in good shape to succeed and thrive in the future, and I look forward to watching its progress. It has been an amazing and fulfilling experience being a part of a great institution and working with all of you: parents, students, directors. Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to lead and shape this premier band program, while enjoying your company and the beautiful music.

A Great Source of Engergy...

Vitamin MD Mike Nagata: ―I've been coming along for band comp's and other events as the Team Doctor since Jonathan started as a freshman in 2004. He was the Viking Band Drum Major his senior year and ended up graduating a few weeks ago from UC Berkeley after being the Drum Major for the Cal Band this past year. Thomas started the year after Jonathan graduated. Through the years I've taken care of flus, colds, sore throats, cramps, blisters, headaches, dizziness, dehydration, blood clots under the fingernail, and all assorted mood fluctuations. The highlight was spending a week in London for the 2010 New Year's Day Parade. Such fun and pride seeing the Viking Band marching through the streets of a historic city. They've been great groups of students over the years, usually well-mannered and intelligent, sometimes silly and careless like many teens. It's great to see them as little timid freshmen, graduate as high school seniors, and see them when they come home years later after college as young adults. I like the think that being in the Viking Band had something to do about them growing up as good citizens and succeeding. It's been a blast watching them.‖ The Samohi Bands are extremely grateful for the contributions of these and many other volunteers. Best of luck to those who are leaving the program, and to those who will be back again and hard at work this summer!

Congratulations to our “Graduating” Parents!

On April 16-17 the Santa Monica High School Winter Guard attended the Winter Guard Association of Southern California Championships in Orange County. Over 350 groups from all over Southern California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona competed at 6 different sites. The Samo Guard had their best performance of the season on Saturday and took home the SILVER MEDAL in their division, only 0.6 points out of first place. Their score also qualified them for the finals competition on Sunday at the

Bren Events Center on the UC-Irvine campus. Samo ended the season placing 7th overall, out of a field of FIFTY-TWO competing groups. Their finals score of a 79.95 was only 1.2 points away from taking home the bronze medal, and the nearest competitor below them was 1.8 points away, meaning those 3rd-7th place spots were in very tight competition. Congratulations to the Samohi Winter Guard and Manager Kyle Miller on their highest-ever placement at the WGASC Championships!

In their 2nd season, the Santa Monica High School Indoor Percussion continues to surprise and delight the judges. On Saturday, April 30th they competed in the American Drum Line Association Championships at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos. Under the direction of Percussion Instructor Jeremy Miller, Samohi had the highest total scores in Snare, Tenor and Bass drumming, and they scored a whopping 89.26 points overall, finishing in 2ND PLACE in the Scholastic Open Division. Way to go, Samo!
