SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EVENTS EDUCATION NEWSROOM PEOPLE WAYS TO SUPPORT FAU CONTACT US POPULATION BIOLOGY & BEHAVIORAL ECOLOGY (PBBE) PBBE initiates collaborative research on black guillemots in the Alaskan Arctic - July 2011 Greg O’Corry-Crowe traveled to remote Cooper Island in the Beaufort Sea in July of 2011 to work with Dr. George Divoky on his world renowned study of the black guillemot, an arctic seabird on the frontlines of climate change. Dr. Divoky and his organization, Friends of Cooper Island, have been studying the population and behavioral ecology of black guillemots for nearly four decades. This unique study is one of the few long-term investigations that has documented the impacts of climate and related environmental change, particularly sea ice loss, on a marine bird and the wider ecosystem. Using both genetic and field techniques, PBBE will conduct research focused on learning how major environmental change, including prey shifts, affect an individual bird’s fitness and how variation in fitness across the breeding population will influence population evolution and viability. We’re excited to work with George on such an important and literally cutting-edge study. News >> back to PBBE Main Page New PBBE Internships and work-study program announced - February 2012 Liz Hartel and Elizabeth Murdoch recently developed two new programs to assist with our research and educational mission. Working closely with the Institute and the broader University, we are initiating an internship program for (primarily) new graduates to get the opportunity to work in a research program. The interns will be trained in and conduct photo analysis, data base management and some field work. Termed ‘voluntary research positions’ the internships are unpaid and last three months. The complementary work-study program is specifically for FAU undergraduates, tailored to offer aspiring ecologists an opportunity to learn critical skills and get experience working on research projects. The Internship program is now accepting applications for spring 2012. For details click here. Recent Publications 2012 Bonin, C.A., Goebel, M.E., O’Corry-Crowe, G.M., and Burton, R.S. 2012.
