1. Describe the change in population from 1800 to 2050. (4)

At the start in 1800 the population was 1 billion

The growth was slow and steady up to 1900 when it was 2 billion.

From this pint to 2050 it rose steeply to 9b

2. Describe the main features of global distribution of population in the world (4)

Very dense areas in Western Europe, e.g. Britain and South Asia such as India.

Also some dense areas in countries with coasts.

Very sparse in western parts of Africa, Russia and Australia

3. Explain how this map showing global distribution of population change is related to wealth. (4)

Poor areas, e.g. in Africa have over 40% population gain. Birth rate is high which suggests it is a poor country. BR may be high due to lack of contraception, little access to medicine and healthcare and a need for children to work on the land.

Areas such as Western Europe have only 0-10% change. This is because here is access to contraception and healthcare. There is a higher chance of survival so there is less need to have so many children.

4 Describe the birth and death rate over the 5 stages (4)

Stage 1 both DR and BR are high

Stage 2 BR remains high and DR starts to fall

Stage 3 BR also starts to fall

Stage 4 Both BR and Dr are relatively low

Stage 5 BR is lower than the DR

5 Suggest reasons why the death rate falls in Stage 2 (2)

Access to better food and medicine so survival rates are greater

6.Suggest reasons why the birth rate falls in stage 3? (2)

Access to contraception

Because food and medicine has enabled better survival rates there is less need to have so many children

7. Explain the relationship between the physical geography of China and its population distribution (6)

Distribution of population in China

Distribution of relief in China

Distribution of precipitation in China

In south-eastern China there is a high rainfall of over 1500mm and relatively flat land around 0-300m above sea level.

The population is very dense with over 1000 people per km²

The low and relatively fat land and high rainfall means it is ideal for growing crops

People will be attracted to these areas for the crop growing and availability of jobs and food.

Over time, settlements and towns become bigger and established.
