Training Opportunity

• The 2018 Kansas Infectious Disease Symposium

will be held May 10-11, 2018.

– Pre-conference surveillance training to be hosted

by the Kansas Syndromic Surveillance Program

which will focus on syndromic surveillance tools

and best practices.

New Data and Reports

• There will be new updates to Kansas Health Matters coming

out later in March. These will be highlighted in Public Health

Connections newsletter and in a separate email from the

Public Health Informatics Group.

• Look for BEPHI presentations at the Governor's Public Health

Conference in early April. Zach Stein will discuss the latest

updates to ESSENCE software used for Syndromic

Surveillance and Julia Soap will co present on “Examining

Cultural and Heritage Language as Determinants of Health.”

Syndromic Surveillance

• To the health departments that are onboard with our

Syndromic Surveillance application ESSENCE, we

have redacted out bad data that was inadvertently

sent to Kansas from a group of providers, separate

notices have been sent to the health departments

detailing the impact. If people have questions,

please call Zach Stein.

Other Infectious Disease Investigations

• Varicella cluster in Pottawatomie CO

• Varicella cluster in Shawnee CO

• KS has one case in the multistate outbreak of

Salmonella linked to kratom. States and the CDC

are continuing to search for a common producer,

and collecting and testing kratom powder

• KS has one case in a possible multistate outbreak of

listeriosis. Cluster seems associated with persons

from Eastern Europe.

Update on Disease Regulations• The hearing for the infectious disease regulations with no

suggested changes from

• Post hearing changes are being considered to address clerical

issues

• The responsiveness summary will be prepared in conjunction with

KDHE’s legal department.

• Next step is submitting the package to the Department of

Administration and Attorney General’s office. Then we will file for

publication with the Secretary of State’s office. This could involve

another 2-3 months.

• Then there is a 15 day waiting period before the regulations

become effective.
